A perfect simulacrum such as Tuomas, the robot child, can become real only if it exhibits the most human characteristic: the ability to dream, to wish for impossible things. By dreaming about the blue fairy who will turn him into a real boy, David has already become real or human (the two are considered identical in the film). What makes the simulated being real is its desire to be real: the desire to be real cannot itself be simulated, which proves that it is a reliable criterion for differentiating between the real and the simulated. However, the positing of the desire to be real as the distinguishing mark of the real makes the real lacking in itself. The real is defined as that which lacks reality, that which wants to become real.

I'm just mildly intrigued by how someone can tell me to calm down whilst simultaneously giving their own (wildly inaccurate and unfair) character assassination. You seem to have set yourself against a certain type, and for the purposes of convenience have made me adhere to that type come hell or high water. I don't aim to bring pleasure here, I aim to let off steam and air my opinions so that others might contend them. Instead of contending, you've aimed cheap shots ('Oxbridge whimsy' indeed, o thou frightful nincompoop) at the speaker. If I was trying to patronise you, I'd do it so much better, my dear fellow. You'd barely notice.

Anyway, I'm off for a bit. Lurk away.

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

Louis Jagger (Cambridge) replied to Dan's post on May 2, 2007 at 5:39 PM
Actually, Dan, I just wanted to say that the current Orbital thread on ILX just warmed my heart like you wouldn't believe. Orbital are one of the few bands in existence whose best music I can love without compunction, without any sort of qualifier or 'yeah, but...' to force doubt into my mind. There's just no baggage with them, no need to conform to certain regulations; to me, they just seem to make astoundingly brilliant head-music without being a) wankers, b) scenesters, c) up their own behinds or d) at all constricted by any conventional notions of propriety. Their music is as refreshing and natural as it is (conversely) sequenced and electronic (a paradox that increases their achievement yet further). I know I was a total ass to create a 'pantheon' of instrumental music including Bach, Mozart, Davis and Orbital, but I stand by the point that only certain people can create a complex, flowing piece of instrumental (i.e. non-lyrical) music that doesn't sound in the slightest bit contrived, and fewer still can create such music and make it improve, progress, and grow exponentially upon the crest of its own increasing awesomeness (I'm rambling, but I hope you catch my drift). Orbital are one of the few acts who can do such a thing to me (oh, and just for Jon, The Boredoms are up there too).

And when Enrique says 'OUT THERE SOMEWHERE FFS PEOPLE', he is right. So, so right. I have a friend here at uni, a very intelligent architect with a penchant for classical music and good comedy, and 'Out There Somewhere' is probably the one piece of music we see 100% totally eye-to-eye on. Taken as a whole, it is masterful, perfect, amazing etc, but the last four minutes fifty seconds might actually be the definition of music for me. That little synth change-up 10:38 into Part 2 is...just...well, it's one of the very very few things I reckon couldn't actually have been improved upon.

Back to the whole 'liking without qualifier' thing...I reckon the new band whom I'll feel that way about are Working For A Nuclear Free City. There's a thread about them somewhere. I think they're an absolute breath of fresh air in British indie, there's nothing whatsoever to dislike about them, and everyone with more than a passing interest in electronic, shoegaze, or other alternative music really must check them out sooner rather than later.

If the goodfolk of ILX could be alerted to these messages, I'd be grateful. I mean, there's a helluva lot more I could talk about, but at this moment in time, what I've just said felt right. One thing: no new Electric Soft Parade album thread? :-( It's pretty damn good!

OK, over and out, LJ

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 16 June 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

And when Enrique says 'OUT THERE SOMEWHERE FFS PEOPLE', he is right. So, so right.

penis not in vagina = still a virgin
post-coitus = not a virgin

More like

has a hymen = virgin
bloody spot on the sheets = not a virgin

Virginity is a social construct created solely for women, and men don't need to worry about it. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying.
