fake japanese funk by frenchies handed to me by my insane coworker earlier today. i will share with bros:

Yamasuki
Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki

"For those in need of epic, exotic, metronomic and dare I say it 'proto-psychedelic-hip-hop that defies categorization' you need look and listen no further. An educational-bubblegum-multi-cultural-psych-rock-opera with lavish choral arrangements and triple-fat beats and bass-lines is the only way to describe this 1971 French/Japanese choreography LP which was designed to bridge the European and Eastern-Asian culture-gap through the power of deep and funky music. This pseudo-Japanese concept album was the brainchild of prolific French production duo Jean Kluger and Daniel Vangarde. Based on a dance named the 'Yamasuki,' it was originally released in very small quantities on the independent label Biram in 1972, inadvertently becoming a useful educational tool for French students keen to learn Japanese. Yamasuki is a collection of beautiful pop songs, sung by a Japanese choir, offset to pounding drum patterns, vibes and fuzz guitar work-outs. The hip-hop-esque beats of 'Yama Yama' and 'Kono Samuri' have made the original LP a highly sought-after relic for break collectors and loop diggers. So that's all you need to know, apart from the added information that original copies of this record are as rare as the usual Finders Keepers hand-carved-stallion-stools; and for those who are asking... this IS the first time Yamasuki has been released on compact disc, as well as being beautifully recreated on DJ- friendly black vinyl. It's also been mastered by Jean Kluger himself from the original studio tapes."

The Congos - Heart of the Congos, prod. Lee Perry 1977

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Saturday, 23 September 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

Is that some sort of remix of the Leon Russell track? If not, that's pretty insane for 1974; it's an amazing version regardless. Incidentally, just grabbed this Rolling Stone review for the album that seems to be from, "Stop All That Jazz":

"Excesses here pile up on one another like derailed train cars: 'The Ballad of Hollis Brown' is an embarrassing Isaac Hayes emulation that must burn Dylan's ears." Yes!

(I'm figuring this is some great mashup, but I'd love to be told otherwise. Thanks for the Alan Hull among other goodies via 33/45, also.)

Craig Dunsmuir (Craig D.), Saturday, 23 September 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

hey you're welcome

I got the Leon Russell off bumrocks, they usually specify if something is a remix or re-edit but who knows

ok this is all I got for now, two more Nilsson from The Point

Me And My Arrow
Poli High

it's like this weird kids' record with a continuous narrated story in between the pop songs
Blackalicious used the first one on Blazing Arrow

Man...I was watching the Fosse film All that Jazz and there was this AMAZING song in it so I remembered to check the credits and it was Perfect Day by Nilsson and I was like, I gotta find that, then a week later I was like, I wonder if that song is on that one Nilsson record I got when I found it in the trash, kknnilssonn or whatever. Sure enough, I already owned it. I played it at Dazzle Ships this past wednesday.

TS: Nilsson Perfect Day vs. Lou Reed Perfect Day vs. Saints Perfect Day

IT'S A TIE!

The original Die Dominas beats any of the mixes but I needed to hear the 12" again for "research" purposes.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 23 September 2006 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Saturday, 23 September 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)
