indian food under $10 = hyderabad house, at 448 university avenue. entrees are like $8.95 but you order at a counter so you don't have to tip. i'm not an expert on indian food the way shasta's an expert on japanese stuff but i know it's always full of indian people. actually in silicon valley that's not saying much, all sorts of places are full of indian people.

there's a "50s diner" type place at the corner of emerson and hamilton called palo alto creamery. i'm sure at this point every city in america has a fancy 50s diner restaurant that serves $10 burgers and $5 shakes. anyway, this is the place. they make their hamburger buns and all of their bread in-house (even hot dog buns) they also make their ice cream in-house. make sure you get a burger and a shake. i highly recommend their mint oreo (i think they call it mint cookies and cream) shake too. you'll spend $20 but again it's worth it.

for a quick italian lunch there's a small chain italian fancy-food store called "a.g. ferrari" also at the corner of hamilton & emerson. you can get something called a "piadina" for around $6, it's like an italian quesadilla. italian cheese, prosciutto and some sort of home-made flatbread cooked on a panini grill. excellent. eat w/ an orangina.

if you want to burn money, go to francis ford coppola's "rosso & bianco" restaurant on university (across from borders), or la strada (also on university). both are very expensive ($40+ for dinner) but totally worth it. we go once a month. also palo alto is home to the very first il fornaio but it's always crawling w/ people and the food is inconsistent because the kitchen's so big. who knows, though, you might find yourself eating next to bill hewlett jr.

if you have a bike and you have a long lunch it might be worth it to bike onto stanford campus. there's a thai cafe in the basement of the psychology building where you can get noodle dishes + soda for $5. they only take cash, though. i dunno, that's probably sort of a bizarre recommendation.
if you can drive it's definitely worth a trip to go here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-casita-chilanga-redwood-city#hrid:m-2_s3FWash7x-JPiTtYQg/query:la%20casita

seriously though, palo alto is not a good place for cheap anything. you get used to spending $30/day on food.

massive xpost here but MWhite, O is OK. Food is nothing special but the alcohol selection is above average. I think Bauer loved it.

v@h1d is totally correct w/r/t to cost of living/cost of eating in the bay area. stick to ethnic food (burritos in particular) if you don't want to run up a huge expense.
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 4 April 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)
I like it, Steve. Good soba. Also, I've never had wine with Japanese food and they had a good selection that worked quite well.

also kiya offered to help me make a chemistry unit on understanding indigo oxidation but i don't want to waste his time too much. can you recommend me some reading on textile dying science that isn't about tie-dying with salts?

i am a professional wakeboarder.
you should waste kiya's time and get the chemistry unit. that sounds like fun.

more like $150, i think ... close zoomed-in inspection of the patch shows that it reads "501" and not "501XX" ... that means those are plain STFs and not LVC 501s, right?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)
stfs say 501xx
― eman cipation s1ocklamation (max), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)
i realize this denim talk probably gets really old ... but ... i trimmed my jeans down to just 4 pairs. i got rid of all my LVCs and APCs and whatnot and i'm down to the edwins i talked about upthread (which are fucking dope jeans, i got them for $90 close-out at a store on haight that i'm embarrassed to name) and three pairs of sugar cane (47, hawaii and okinawa, but the hawaii and okinawa are pretty much unworn at this point and i more or less keep them for novelty value / posterity) ...
so here's the q : what's your take on sugar cane?
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
ok in that case i'm pretty sure that LVC STFs say 501xx too ... at least the pairs i've owned did
― moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)
yes XX denim = STF... BUT these are not STF though, they've been laundered (finish = "Dark Rinse"). It's still Cone White Oak XX denim, it's just no longer raw/unwashed.
sugar canes are good entry level denim in the japanese market. as you probably know, most of their lines are made from unusual yarns blending texas cotton and sugar cane fibers... very unusual wear and dye-pooling as a result. they are usually the least expensive of the boutique japanese denim ($120-180) making them popular for people getting interested in cult denim but aren't willing to pay $300+. to sugar cane's credit they have been focusing on more exotic and premium models and finishes to give them more credibility in the market.
yeah edwins are RIP so hold on to those. rakuten and auctions.yahoo.co.jp prices have been pretty stable but once all available inventory is sold through those could definitely appreciate if you take good care of them.

AKAMIMI (aka "Paul Smith Red Ear made in Japan")
these are the only ones that i've tried and i found the fit wrong plus i think they felt overpriced although i don't remember what they cost off the top of my head

I personally LOVE the fit of the akamimi's. Maybe the best fit of any jean I've ever owned. They are sized really wacky though so you may want to undersize.

45RPM
a+ jeans would not wash again but seriously cheapest pair were $300+ or distressed for ~$450 ooohhh man
― delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)
in japan they're about 60% of the price of the NYC stores. they have to pay a heavy duty to import them here.
to 45rpm's credit, they are OBSESSED with the quality of cotton they use so while a new pair may look/feel similar to something you've seen, after a few years is when you really get to see and feel the difference. I have a 4 year old pair of Aihiku (which are any more, basically a predecessor to Jomon model) and they are incredibly dye-rich and soft (and have been rinsed three times but they still look like one-washes).

steve,
the prices you quote for sugar cane are like half of what i paid ... is that the import duty?
also, there's a new school of thought that you should wash your canes once a month. what do you think of that?
