Remy, food pickiness is an evolutionary strategy for children to avoid eating unsafe food, although this mainly is an aversion to novel vegetables. I wonder....

i really don't buy this at all, jon. i think that contemporary american diet is so impulse-driven and region/culture/habit sensitive that evolutionary advantage has little to do with meal selection.

fwiw:

the kids i know tend to pick out/avoid foods like bread or pie crust, browned edges on meat or pastries, unsweet fruits and slightly undercooked or crunchy vegetables, and fish with any flavor at all. and all of these are 'safe' foods with high nutritional content.

conversely, these same children will willingly eat custards and puddings served at room temperature, raw cookie dough, candies without detrimental nutritional value, chemical-laden snack foods, melty popsicles shared with the dog, ham sandwiches sitting in a lunchbox since breakfast, etc.... all of which -- in evolutionary terms -- are highly suspect w/r/t digestive health.

i met a raw foodie at a party last weekend

there's this great vegan place near me which has awesome cheap beer.
