to me it's more the live experience (saw them at a legendary gig with crash worship), maybe the only time Tim Ellison, vah1d and I were ever in the same room together? i think we talked about it on the rob crow thread on noize. let me search it.

ya i almost posted it to an 'ask vah1d' thread but wasn't sure if he still reads ilx

hey steve shasta,
i'm looking for a regular/loose fit jean with a nice narrow tapered leg (around the ankle)
does anything like this exist? like the kinda jeans dudes back in 87 would rock with a pair of dm's and a baseball jacket. i've got some tapered 521s but they're a bit too emo-fit for my tastes
― hotel califor.nia (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
look for "carrot fit", i think dyao was asking about this exact same cut on the Jeans thread on ILS. let me dig...

ayo ss i'm thinking about studying abroad and can't decide if it'd be better to go back to africa for an extended period or go to one of our affilitates in NIIGATA
tell me about niigata---i've heard there's skiing nearby???
― GREAT JOB Mushroom head (gbx), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:35 (sixteen years ago)
niigata is close to nagano where the 88 winter olympics were so yeah, there is a lot of winter sport access.
the niigata region is known for having really good, clean water. niigata also produces arguably the highest quality rice in the world: koshihikari. because of the high quality of rice and water, niigata is also known for their sake, particularly for their dry varietal production.
the annual fuji rock festival is held nearby as well every summer, it's like a massive euro-style festival with 3 days of the first-tier alternative rock/pop musicians both local and around the world. at fuji rock 1999 i saw the last boredoms show with seiichi yamamoto (some would say the last boredoms show), where at the end of VCN he threw his guitar up 30 feet in the air and let it crash down on the stage shattering... great sound.

steve shasta what is your opinion of heston blumenthal?
― etrian odysseus (cozen), Thursday, 15 April 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)
i have never eaten his food but my friend has his cookbook that I peeked at. I guess I'd place him in the category of fanciful conceptual fad chefs?
i am not huge on molecular gastronomy, tho i think it's wonderful for those who're that bored with food that they need everything deconstructed or served on foam or in a tall shot glass.

Dear Steve Shasta,
I heard you are a Denim King! I got these raw denim jeans from H&M the other day, what can you tell me about them? How long does it take for them to stop smelling weirdly sour, and how and when should I go about washing these? Thanks!
Your Buddy,Steve
― Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm Ann Reinking! (Stevie D), Thursday, 29 April 2010 21:50 (sixteen years ago)
yo SD,
the weird sour smell is the scent of the dye. if you like dark jeans, you learn to appreciate the sour smell. if you don't mind your jeans getting a shade or 2 lighter, give them a wash. once most* raw denim hits water it will shrink though so maybe this was explained to you upon purchase (?) so you've sized accordingly (?).
*if they are sanforized they will not shrink, but this will be called out on the care label or on the packaging that came with the jeans. also, this is very uncommon.
if the jeans are your true size and you don't want to shrink them by washing them, there are alternate ways of dealing with the stink/funk. probably the most common is sticking them in the freezer with a box of baking soda.

Stevie,
I'm a big guy who just wants some simple but nice looking jeans. Willing to spend around $100 for a good pair, but I'm not sure I can put up with any crazy washing routine. Is this doable or am I expecting too much out of life?
Sincerely,Me
― catty (jeff), Friday, 30 April 2010 07:28 (sixteen years ago)
uniqlo makes the nicest jeans you can find for around $70 USD. if that's too much, cheap mondays or levi's 501XXs will work in a pinch.

― catty (jeff), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)
Oh man, I LOVE Uniqlo!! I haven't picked up a pair of their jeans yet but several people have told me their selvedges are the cream of the crop of affordable denim. The sour smell is getting better; I don't mind it at all really. And I was told they'd shrink ~5%, so I bought ones that fit me snugly in the dressing room, and they've since streched out a teeny bit while wearing, and so I think they should shrink down to normal size when (if!) I wash them. I have the bad, bad habit of buying jeans that fit "just right" in the store, and after 3 days of wearing them I need a belt. All of my jeans require belts (except my new H&M raw denim ones!)

am currently breaking in a pair of uniqlo raw denim right now. as I've lost a little weight since I bought them I'm thinking I should have waited to size down even more :/

Well it's a really straight cover leaving no room for interpretation, although the production is more 00s (HRDC smooshing the freqs all together). The singer (Chico? Chito?) is a little flat and doesn't range as well as Rick, esp going into the screams. I am impressed by the replication of the telecaster brightness/chime-yness. But other than that, seems like karaoke... why even record this, just save it and insert it into a live set and make a couple geezers happy.
― _▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)
The press copy seems to disagree:
The band pays homage to one of their influences by treating the song like a precious Faberge egg that they smash into a million pieces and set on fire in a classic Deftones style.
― _▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:28 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i've got to go with BUZZNET here, before even reading that i was listening and thinking to myself "hrmm this sounds not unlike many tiny pieces of very expensive eggs, set aflame," didn't quite detect the Fabergé influence but i was on the right track ya know
― iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

dear steve of shasta,
why is tempura served with that funky, almost tasteless dipping sauce? why would you ruin tempura by making it soggy? what's that grated clear stuff you mix into the sauce? why don't the japanese use something tastier instead, like bbq sauce or motor oil?
yours,dayo
