WELCOME GABBNEB!

Dear Skate Dudes,

Why am I such a HORRIBLE SKATER?

Lopsidedly,

hstencil

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, if you don't start skating before age 10, you have no chance at being good

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

goddammit, my mom waited until 7TH GRADE to buy me a board like I wanted because she thought it was TOO DANGEROUS.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the book (and poster) from that art installation that ddb posted a pic of upthread. i see gonz in my hood sometimes, very chill (and short) guy. probably one of the top 5 SF skaters ever.

THIS IS THE THREAD WHERE WE WELCOME gabbneb AND BRO, i mean MONETIZING EYEBALLS!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen gonz out here too. He is a tweaker, but in the best way!

A couple years ago, I was coming out of a friend's Work Christmas Party, it was around 9 o'clock around 27th and 5th which is pretty empty at night. I was a bit hammered and it was cold...from out of nowhere the gonz comes skating up the street...Nobody around except me and my "date"...I yell "Gonnnnnz!!" he raises his fist in a black power kind of way and gives me the NOD.

I was giddy after that.

I so wanted to push my date into a freezy puddle and go with the Gonz.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"A skateboard - with griptape, etc, used once or twice when Wifey wanted to learn. I stenciled the "Satan" fish on the botton, otherwise the bottom is plain. I tried it out and it's definitely decent. $25."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah $25 is nothing...so long as he didint buy it the sports authority.

Awwww my little brother's MySpace profile has two adorable pics of him skating. Of course there's also a shot of him POST-snowboard accident, looking more than a little the worse for wear.

(I don't think he'd appreciate my use of "adorable" there but he can deal.)

Oh hey, I just got interviewed for a pretty big skateboard magazine about music stuff - I mostly just called out/shittalked everyone who owes me money/fucked me over in the last year.

a friend of mine wrote a really good article for King Skateboard about the skate industry's pathetic and cowardly deference to people like racist nazi-sympathizer Jason Jessee. Jessee complained and so they took down the article:

Jason Jessee reached out and asked us to allow him to address the issues brought up in this article with us in an interview.

We will be conducting it in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

the original text of the article is preserved on this forum post: http://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=99673.msg2807402#msg2807402

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 1 June 2018 16:05 (eight years ago)

as a totally uninformed outsider to the skate world, when i read something like this

But I'm not sure many skateboarders realize just how small and insular the US skateboard industry really is. The slightest look behind the curtain reveals about 120 people, 150 max, cramped into a cozy pyramid; everyone knows everyone else. Nor might the average skater realize just how concentrated the power is at this pyramid's top. In 2012 I was surprised to receive an email from Dave Carnie, a writer I'll argue is second only to Stecyk in terms of importance to skateboarding. It seemed that Carnie had read my profile of Andrew Reynolds and wondered about doing something on Steve Berra. I'd have to be careful, he warned, because he'd have to give Berra final review of whatever I wrote. When I said, basically, hold on you're Dave Fucking Carnie, he explained how Berra had the power to yank advertising and thus was not someone to fuck with. He admitted that this was not very punk rock, but unfortunately he had to consider the reality of the situation.

my first thought is to say fuck the existing 120-150 people participating in this bullshit industry, tell everyone to assume those 150 people died and can't be communicated with anymore, and form a new community with cool people who aren't cowards. prooobably pretty hard to do that though.

I have no other outlet for this so I'm just here to say I'm feeling a little devastated by today's news about the death of Marc Johnson and want to create my little memorial to someone I admired for many formative years growing up. Of all my All Time Favourite skaters, he held that title for longer than anyone; he was my favourite favourite-skater. From the time I got my first skate mag, back in 2000, it was clear he was someone to pay close attention to. His skating was technically next-level, creative, stylish, impressive - all these qualities, but to the max. He was famously funny and allegedly a nice person too. For my money, he has the best song selection track record in skate video history. It was upsetting to hear, around 10 years ago or so, that he'd reportedly gone off the rails a bit - rumours of drug issues and erratic behaviour, which makes me worry about what may have led to his death, but don't want to add to online speculation. At some point he liked a comment or post I made on instagram, and I still remember being star struck. I just want to communicate the vast gratitude I feel for what he has contributed to skateboarding.

Ok, now for a little tribute:

This part came out THIRTY years ago. It was already legendary when I first saw it in the early 00s, just so ahead of its time, the kind of advanced stuff you'd expect from someone destined to become top tier, but still very much doing his own thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc0UKS8vrDQ

Modus Operandi was a life changing video for me, it defined an aesthetic, a way of looking at skateboarding, that continues to make me feel big feelings. Marc + Built to Spill is the stuff of dreams. I was thinking of his part two days ago (specifically, the part in the credits of him in the wig store, and how that seems all the more funny to me now, as someone that has gone bald - something I didn't appreciate at 14: Marc as a bald icon, he pulled it off in a way I can look up to)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDNDg7Wjndw

This part just made my head spin, clip after clip of crazy, unprecedented tricks. A testament to how his career embodied his Modus Operandi intro about doing things you didn't think were possible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJK7xonD8Qo

I also have to say, his first Emerica shoe is one of the coolest looking and iconic shoes in skateboarding history:
https://external-preview.redd.it/whats-everyones-favourite-skate-shoe-of-all-time-mine-are-v0-PKklXpqr_RejNdcnZVasbq33y4AJT_kVLWWiexs8gCU.jpeg

Rest in peace, Marc, you were my skateboarding hero, and always a skate legend
