In other "comics creators gettin' PAID" news, Death Jr. is now apparently a video game after ONE ISSUE.

are they gonna keep all the 9/11 stuff i wonder? i remember reading something with someone connected to the now apparently scuttled* watchmen flick (i'm guessing it was paul greengrass) talking about how the recent wave of superhero flix has familiarized the general audience enough with the conventions of the genre to be ready for a meta/reimagining superhero flick.

* i saw an article in one of the local papers today about the recent comix flix wave wondering 'have they finally ran out of comic book characters to make movies about?**' with someone from marvel responding 'no, we've actually got like hundreds of characters' and the writer noting something like 'he wasn't joking folx!'. the article mentioned watchmen as forthcoming, and described it as a comic about 'an opposite world where president nixon is popular and the u.s. won the vietnam war!' (it didn't mention whether cats chase dogs or birds swim and fish fly!)

** my dad asked me this ('there can't be anymore comic books to turn into movies left right?') to which i responed that there were still some left and he asked 'really? like what?' and i responded 'well they're making a wonder woman flick', dad: 'and then that's the last one right?', me: 'yes, that's the last one'.

BKV getting luv from Hollywood two times!

I really hope they do keep the 9/11 stuff, but I wonder how they'll actually tell the story, since the backstory's being revealed to the readers in a piecemeal fashion. (cf. the cliffhanger from last issue!) Also, the stuff that Ex Machina revolves around (the West Wing bits) might not be the best thing to use as the fulcrum of the movie. Unless Aaron Sorkin emerges from his snowy retreat to GIT R DONE. A movie based on a superhero book where the superheroics is 2ndary, tho, would be a nice change (and might've been the hook that got the project greenlighted).

I say all this having not read the Newsarama post yet.

BKV (& Pia re: Y movie) revealed the plan of attack at SDCC: make a lousy movie, then get picked up to do a TV-series, the format that makes most sense for the serialized nature of the comic!

was surprised at how much I enjoyed this, even though all of the plot "twists" were totally predictable. The quality execution and acting really sold it. A few minutes too long - should've ditched all the shots/scenes of her out in the real world, should've just ended with that shot of her leaving the compound while the sucker bangs helplessly on the door.

Stop hijacking this dead thread about something that never happened!

Anyway fwiw I didn't *hate* this, lol nudity aside I didn't think making Nathan a creepy sex robot dungeon master was inappropriate, and ok the actual climax - leaving Caleb locked in the room - was well done and quite O_O. Should've ended it there though.

It seems a given that Ava knew she couldn't have killed Nathan without "help" since she would have probably gleaned the fates of her predecessors, several of whom probably tried that (without knives) and got recycled themselves

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 30 December 2015 22:48 (two years ago) Permalink

I think Caleb is gonna be fine, if Nathan's mini bar is as full of water as his was (or there's the fish tanks if not) he just has to stay alive till people wonder why Nathan isn't answering his emails and come looking for him.

Ava seems to be capable of perceiving utility in learning as an end in itself, if so, then she would arrive at utility calculations that aren't the same as a true sociopath.

Can't make head or tail of this. Ava is sociopathic because whatever her values are, empathy and sympathy for humans aren't among them. She probably sees us much like we would see ants - worth studying, not worth killing en masse unless they threaten her existence, individually completely insignificant.

I think going without him might have been a bigger risk. She probably could have exploited him further.

I really never thought about Caleb being perfectly safe in the house. Don't know why I was so sure he would die.

Glad this film eventually got watched, talked about and awards. When it came out in Britain I was afraid it had pretty much flopped and was going to disappear.

https://www.quora.com/At-the-end-of-the-movie-why-does-Ava-ask-Caleb-to-stay-in-the-room
^^this ridiculously long post is somewhat circular in its logic but does contain perspectives that may be of interest

And Caleb thinks he wants to set Ava free, but his perception of her and choice to try to "rescue" her is driven by his own sexual feelings for her, and his ability to see her as a "person" are driven by his ability to feel sexually attracted to her and to justify his attraction to her... and, most importantly, by his assumption that she returns his affections. If he were not sexually attracted to her, and if she did not suggest she was sexually attracted to him, then he would surely not have reacted as he did nor tried to help her escape. His idea of "rescue" is dependent on sexualization of her as a gendered being who will have sex with him. Which is an extension of gender bias and privilege, and of oppression.

I just watched this.

AVA obviously has no compunction about walking away from the house with Caleb alive, but trapped and probably doomed to a slow death. She is not distressed by this at all. This is pretty good evidence that AVA never had any attachment to or compassion for Caleb, which prima facie proves she was entrapping him purely for the purpose of escape.

However, since AVA's only previous experience of humans prior to meeting Caleb was her master/slave relationship with Nathan, her manipulation of Caleb does not imply that she was incapable of developing a more operative sense of compassion with humans in the future, assuming she learned more about our variations and was less vulnerable to oppression by humans, being both mobile and intelligent (and well-disguised as not an 'other').

btw, I am only using "she" and "her' as shorthand, seeing that AVA is presented to us in the form of a human female. In truth, she is not a woman. It would have been a somewhat different movie if AVA had been male and the interrogator a woman.

Ah, pretty decent movie. Some initial reactions.

Nice "hey that's not how the Turing test works, is this going to be *really* bad?" fake-out near the beginning.

The repeated gag about wrongly attributed quotes.

The implication at the end I think is that AVA's emergence into the world is the beginning of the end for humans. Caleb quoting Oppenheimer (quoting the Bhagavad-Gita) is not just about Nathan killing off prototypes. This is made more explicit by the appearance of the OMD song earlier in the film and of course Nathan saying that the next model will be the "singularity". The next model will be built by AVA.

Although bored by so many Eurorack Carpenter knock-offs the Barrow / Salisbury soundtrack was really good. Some luvverly filtering.

Didn't recognise Poe Dameron even though I only just re-watched TFA. Weird choice making this guy a pisshead. You'd think coke + 'research chemicals'; possibly a ratings consideration.

It's not perfect but it's ahead of some of the people on imdb who think it's too dumb.
