Who doesn't love A POLL! (Apart from Dave R)

I enjoyed doing the best comics evah one and thought it was time for a big ILC summer cross-over event, so here it is - the best characters ever.

I'm excited about this one cos I genuinely have no idea who will win!

Rules as before - four nominations each. Any character you like. For characters who have had several incarnations or identities you can be as specific as you like.

Nominations open until Friday 15th July, which is a Friday. Then two weeks of votes and then the big ILC barbeque countdown can commence!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:43 (nineteen years ago) link

So can we specify something like "Emma Frost (Grant Morrison version)"? Or "Mary Jane Watson, Go-Go Dancer"?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I will make up a rule on the fly that you can tie a character to a specific writer or artist's interpretation of them, but not to a specific story or appearance.

i.e. yes to the former, no to the latter.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

So, no Black Lois then?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Tom, you have just effectively boxed out Lois Lane, Black Woman!!!!!

(xpost)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Great, now *I* have no idea who's going to win either.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, fuck it, NO RESTRICTIONS AT ALL. Vote in July as your (social)conscience dictates.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I nominate Crazy Jane from the Doom Patrol.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Tom: is it OK to fill the thread w/ suggestions for nomination?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Um no, separate thread for that please so I don't get confused when I transfer noms into a list!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm on it!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

We're not going to break this down into leading and supporting roles?

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 13:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Any limit to how many we can nominate? [WAIT I CAN READ: "four nominations each"]

Dave, no need to remind ILC to nom Tara while I'm still round!

L (Leee), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't understand the difference between suggesting a nomination and nominating.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Suggesting nominees = what folks that already nominated 4 folk can do to lobby for characters they didn't nominate!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

You are allowed 4 nominations each. These will be the characters we actually vote on, so as to keep the numbers down and increase statistical rigour ;)

You can suggest nominations to spark the imaginations of others yet to nominate, if you're greedy and think there are more than 4 good characters in comics.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, thanks.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Greetings.

For countless months now I have observed your insignificant and somewhat geeky message board, beholden to a solemn oath never to interfere in your affairs. However, events now dictate that I must, with great reluctance, break this oath, for the very future of ILC hangs in the balance!!! Just this once. Honest. No, really.

My nominations are:

Dr. Manhatten
William Gull
Johnny Alpha (As drawn by Ezquerra and written by Wagner)
Proffesor Calculus

Thus speaks Wooden the watcher!!!

She's the geekier girl in Ghost World.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh, great pick! Definitely will get my vote.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Ditto for Professor Calculus and Scrooge McDuck. It's kinda funny, Tintin won the ILC poll, yet I guess no one would even think of nominating Tintin himself, because he's (deliberately) hollow. Still, he has perhaps the best cast of supporting characters in any comic ever; Captain Haddock could just as well be my number one vote.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Tintin = Seinfeld

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Outstanding questions:

- should lone wolf and cub be allowed as 1 character?
- are Ken Shinn and stonemonkeys lists on the suggest nominations thread real actual nominations, since neither have posted on this one?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Two threads with v. similar titles but different aims...I get confused easily.

Okay, my noms. I may as well indulge in some hopeless nostalgia for 1980s 2000AD strips.

Rogue Trooper (the first one)
Wulf Sternhammer (Johnny Alpha's mate from Strontium Dog with the comedy Norse accent)
Mek-Quake (Ro-Busters era)
Archie the Robot (in his Acid Archie the Anarchist alter-ego from Zenith Book 2)

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Friday, 27 May 2005 15:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 29 May 2005 16:00 (nineteen years ago) link

- should lone wolf and cub be allowed as 1 character?

Yeah, I thought "wait, is that cheating?" as soon as I pressed submit. I think that there's a case to be made for it, but I can't extend it much beyond "they always appear together!" (which can be said for tons of characters obv) and "they're dull on their own!" (same thing).

If I chose the Dupont brothers instead would I have to choose one?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 29 May 2005 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, if we allow Lone Wolf and Cub as one character, then Frank and Manhog probably ought to be collapsed as well - heck, the entire Woodringverse is pretty much just one character if you look at it crosseyed and squint.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 29 May 2005 22:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, I would like to apologize for the use of the term, "Woodringverse."

I think the Dupondt's should count as one character, because (besides the slight difference in the moustache) they're impossible to distinguish from each other - they both act exactly the same, and have no personal traits unique to only one of them.

I guess this isn't the case with Lone Wolf and Cub.

These polls are worse than Superman/Batman.

Laziness, dear boy, laziness.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I can support that, then. I thought you guys were just maliciously holding back the results in order to drive up hype for the Michael Turner variant covers. But if it's laziness, you have my full backing!

My nominees:

GrimJack (John Gaunt)
V (for Vendetta)
Nexus (Horatio Hellpop)
The Hulk (Bruce Banner) -- I don't think anyone actually nominated the big guy yet.

Who won this, Batman? I don't remember anymore. IIRC Maggie from Love & Rockets placed quite high.
