Y: The Last Movie

Writer/director/comics savant David Goyer talked to Sci Fi Wire about his upcoming projects, and mentioned a certain Vertigo property. "I'm one of the producers on it, along with the guys at Benderspink, and Jeff Vintar, who wrote I, Robot, is adapting it. We just got our first draft in. It's very good, and he's embarking on a rewrite." Goyer would likely not direct, but he did mention a script sitting on his computer for the Neil Gaiman short story "Murder Mysteries" which he hopes to direct (and find a studio for) one day. "I think it's the best script I've ever written. I call it my 'Dark City.' It's my more idiosyncratic film, and ... as a director, [I need] a blockbuster before I'll have the clout to be able to pull it off, and I'm hoping 'Blade: Trinity' will be the one." Goyer also brushed past the Platinum Studios project "Unique," where he said, "Michael Cooney, [who] wrote Identity, has just started writing a script for it, so that's a long ways off. It's about parallel worlds," and Goyer is attached to direct that one.

Where should I start with Y?

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

At the Regina Public Library. They have all three trades.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

You should start at vol. 1. Or if that doesn't float your boat, and I on an official basis discourage the use thereof, there ARE t0rr3ntz of c0m!x0r.

I really like Y, but Yorrick is a bit of a dickhead. It would've been much more interesting if they'd made him more of a wimpy nerd.

If handled well, it could make a great film. The first issue would make an excellent pre-credit sequence.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

If they can get Charlton Heston to play Yorick, I'll crap my pants!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

w/ Linda Cardinelli as the doc, Gabrielle Union as 355, & the monkey from Outbreak!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, you know Hollywood, if they got K.Reeves to be John Constantine, they'll probably get the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Jeanne Garofolo might make a good Victoria.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, that would be awesome.

The trick with the movie is that they'll actually have to give it an ENDING!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

End with the most recent issue! (Or the one before that one, I don't know if one's come out lately -- end with the issue with the ring in it, hint hint nudge nudge.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Yorrick - Ben Afflek
355 - Halle Berry
Dr. Mann - Lucy Liu
Ampersand - Marcel off Friends

How long a run is Y going to have? Is it going to be Sandman/Preacher length?

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

This issue with the ring in it?

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I think:

James Franco as Yorrick

Ming Na as Dr. Mann

Naomie Harris as 355

Also, Goyer says:
David Goyer here. Just thought I would pop in and give a quick update on the status of the potential Y: The Last Man movie.

I am producing the film with the boys at Bender/Spink (they are currently shooting A History of Violence).

We just got in our first draft of the screenplay. It was written by Jeff Vintar (I-Robot) and it is very faithful to the comics. It largely covers the ground of the first 20 issues or so. It's quite good and was well received by the studio.

We have been in touch mostly with Brian (largely because he's closer), who had a number of meetings with us and has been consulting throughout the process.

If the next pass of the script goes well, there is a good chance that New Line will green-light it for a 2006 release.

As for a movie versus a TV show -- well, we see it as a number of movies. And I have to say, the transition from comic to script was fairly easy.
See here.

It only destroyed the men! So it's only HALF of that issue.

(xpost; "a number of movies"!)

Adam, you would like this.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I read somewhere that the film will have a markedly different ending to the comics continuity, just so the fans of the book aren't spoiled.

in the movie all the male monkeys but one is mysteriously wiped out. thora birch and harvey keitel are committed to return as eva and azro, mimi rogers is gonna be amy again. all have agreed to full frontal clause.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I just wanna go on record as loving Mimi Rogers's front.

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Not to imply that I've actually loved Mimi's front, not outside my dreams, that is.

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Woah, don't google img search Mimi Rogers at work.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Of course, I had to do it. Lotsa boobies.

All the guys love Mimi Rogers. I saw her on Celebrity Poker Showdown and Phil Gordon nearly shoved people out of the way trying to get to her after the game was over.

(she has giant boobs)

one year passes...
So I'm on vol. 5 of Y (it takes us up to where they're about to set off for Japan) and I'm loosing interest slightly. It's all getting a bit repetetive: various factions try and kill/capture Yorrick, various chicks try to shag him. Those burqua wearing women were just silly. It remains well told, but the concept seems to be wearing a tad thin. Worth sticking with?

'Y: The Last Man' Ordered to Series at FX

"Y: The Last Man is a towering achievement among graphic novel storytelling and it’s been rewarding to work with this outstanding team,” FX president of original programming Nick Grad said. “Michael Green and Aïda Mashaka Croal have partnered with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to deliver a stunning new expression of this fascinating and timely story. Melina Matsoukas, who directed the pilot, did an incredible job bringing it to life with Diane Lane and this stellar cast.”

Pretty stoked to see Diane Lane in the cast, but don't want to get too excited about this because so many series have disappointed me in the past few years. Either way, am excited that it's finally being brought to life.

Keoghan is so freakin' weird looking, it's going to take me a bit to get past that casting.
