it's funny, i got all excited when i saw the word "sadfaces" and before i saw the byline

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Do the words secret identity mean nothing to you!?!

Not so much s1ocki as si1ke!

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

so despite some initial skepticism i picked up she-hulk tp#1 yesterday and... well... i'm happy to say i loved it! i haven't read a comic this purely... how do i put it... breezily enjoyable in a long time (esp having just been reading bendis daredevil, which is like she-hulk's darker longer lawyer comic mirror image).

i really really liked that many of the stories in the volume were one-issue wonders! i guess i've gotten used to extremely drawn-out plot arcs at this point (viz daredevil again... which is like the slowest arc ever... although i dig that too) so there's something really refreshing about it. i've always been on the fence in terms of narrative compression (largely because grant morrison is always getting props for it & i tend to think that despite his other skillz he's not very good at it) but it really works here. or maybe this isn't "compression" at all but just old-school comix storytelling.

also: funny!

also: i love the art! guess i better not get used to it huh

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

also i don't really think he writes realistic dialogue OR Realistic Dialogue. he very much writes comedy dialogue (capitalize if you like), he just does it well.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think Slott is basically just a good modern version of old school fun comics writing. He's really good with the old trick of pushing the story along, but making every issue fully enjoyable as a comic that you can jump into without ever having read it before, or going on to the next issue.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 5 March 2006 21:58 (twenty years ago)

totally agree. it really makes me feel like i've gotten my money's worth!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

so of course i rushed out and bought tp#2 cuz i'm sick like that and... i didn't like it as much. i think i prefer his one-issue stories! also the change of artist didn't help. but i will give it another shot for sure.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

You didn't like the boxing??? Heathen!

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

actually i did like that!

i think i wasn't as DELIGHTED with everything, which may have to do with

1) having read the first tp it's less novel
2) i kinda felt like shit last night
3) so i'm going to read it again

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

4) also miss the old artist

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I love the boxing, but it was the first She-Hulk I happened to read.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Also nothing as good as the Spiderman joke.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Which one?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Is it becuz I am black.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 13 March 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

That was AWESOME.

Does Slott write his own solicits?
SHE-HULK #9
Written by DAN SLOTT
Penciled by PAUL SMITH
Cover by GREG HORN
"My SPOILER with SPOILER"
Read SHE-HULK #8 yet? Bet you didn't see THAT coming, didja? Wild, huh? Spiraling out of the end of last issue's CIVIL WAR crossover, She-Hulk's life will NEVER be the same again! Sure, OTHER books SAY that all the time. But when have WE ever said it over in the SHE-HULK book? Really. Trust us, WE'RE good for it.
So... After She-Hulk and SPOILER went and SPOILERED, it's time to deal with the fall out! And that leads to a SPOILER with SPOILER!!! Miss this one, and you'll be kicking yourself in the CENSORED for months!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I think most Marvel writers write their own solicits - I read some Nanorama article a while back where Ed B copped to writing solicits for upcoming issues of Captain America.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Along those lines: I hope Mr. Aguirre-Sacasa didn't actually write the solicit for Spider-Man, because "blood-pounding" is some bullshit.

Just started reading the Dan Slott run of She-Hulk. So unbelievably good! So funny, subtle, great characterization; argh the greatness of this comic

ROFLS!

get it dude!!! it's so great. i actually prefer it to she-hulk.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Why doesn't Marvel let Slott write regular Spidey? Or regular Fantastic Four even?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

She-Hulk has a shockingly detailed Wikipedia entry

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

If I ever had a daughter, her name will be She-Hulk obviously is a sane, intelligent lawyer and under no obligation to volunteer potentially self-incriminating information.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:She-Hulk I also removed a reference under the Powers section referring to her "capacity for love and understanding" as her greatest super-power.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Why doesn't Marvel let Slott write regular Spidey? Or regular Fantastic Four even?

they should!! or ultimate for that matter, why not?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

1) Because that'd really cut into JMS' paycheck.
2) Because having 2 "fun" Spidey titles in the regular Marvel Universe (I'm counting PAD's as "fun") would be one too many.
3) Because editorial dictates are Slott's Kryptonite.
4) Because he thinks Spidey's new costume is pants.
5) Because he's slated to start work on a Marville relaunch.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Now I really regret not nominating JJJ for the best characters poll. I don't know why this constantly delights where the Thing just occasionally amused, but it really does.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that issue is pretty hilarious. I'm a fan of the drink-spittin' page.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Morris Walters being her dad, of course (I didn't get this first time)

There's a lot of talk about his Spiderman above, and I like the way that his JJJ is the opposite - a lot of dumb and crazy stuff has happened to Peter Parker over the last 40 years, so you basically have to pick and choose or end up burying him under the weight of it. Whereas with JJJ the more you pile on the funnier.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

That's sort of the advantage of supporting cast vs. stars.

Should I continue this thread to talk about the Tas Mas vehicle. Or go to MCU.
Anyway, quite deeply fun. I do like a bit of Tas Mas. She's awfully good. & I'm sue she loves being called Tas Mas .
Well anyway, glad this is another good tv show from Marvel.
Was i seeing a LatinX element in the credits. Interesting if so.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2022 09:34 (three years ago)

THat is to say, looking at end credits I was thinking there was LatinX presence in the crew etc, & pretty female.
Which is good.
Hoping that inclusivity and actual diversity is rising. I was watching a lot of the Film Fatales webinars a couple of years ago which seemed to indicate it was. not sure how clear a lens that would be though. May be its own gaze or something.

Now seeing that Head Writer is Asian American. which is cool in itself.

Stevolende, Friday, 19 August 2022 09:57 (three years ago)

Anyone been reading the current (Rainbow Rowell) series? I preordered the Vol. 1 trade on spec… been itching to read something new, and it sounded potentially good.

^Vol. 1 was good – cute and offbeat – and Vol. 2 (which just came out) is even better… kind of next-level, actually, in a few respects. Highly recommended!

Day 1 fan (morrisp), Thursday, 8 June 2023 06:18 (three years ago)

I just took a look at the previews for Vol. 1 on Amazon, it does look promising.
