Bookmarks not working?

I've not been able to add bookmarks for a few threads recently, at the moment it's only Yo P&J, I'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but ILX had the greatest 2009 poll of all time! All time! (2009 ILX Albums Poll Results) that's really bothering me. I can still add them to some other threads though, which makes no sense.

Is there a limit to the number of threads you can bookmark? I seem to have erm, quite a few.

I have a gazillion so i doubt you've maxed out.
It may just be refreshing too fast?

Yeah, there's something afoot with bookmarking. I see errors popping up in the system logs about it. I'll dig in just now

this is weird: most of the bookmarking errors are coming from you (useless chamber), but the db says you don't have any stored at all. Could you go into the Bookmarks page, click through and then post links here to a couple of the posts you've got bookmarked (need to post the permalinks please)?

Finally: what type of bookmarking are you using: old-school two-button-clicks, or javascript-enabled (with the wee "Bookmark Saved" box up in the coner)?

It's the javascript one, i click it in that thread and the little box comes up and that, but it's not adding an actual bookmark. I'll do the permalink thing later/tomorrow when i'm on an actual computer. And i'll try and bookmark this thread for good measure..

OK here's a bookmark that works on a thread started yesterday:

*The only thing I can think that might cause problems is that I had an old login that I got bored of and wanted a new one, but I had threads I was interested in so I sort of re-bookmarked those threads with my new account, just by opening the thread and bookmarking the last post. I can't really see how that would matter though 'cos old threads are fine, and some new threads work, but others don't. It seems completely arbitrary.

This isn't a problem, as far as I can tell. They all seem like threads I would've bookmarked in any case.

ahhh, wait, yeah, looks like all the people have bookmarking troubles are people who've recently made new accounts. That's a good lead.

It doesn't work if you've got JavaScript bookmarks turned off; cld be what you're seeing

my bookmarks are being weird, some are fine, some things i can't bookmark ever and I just realised that even tho the rolling r&b thread has been in my bookmarks the whole time it hasn't been appearing at the top of the screen for some time. its been happening for a while wrt some things not bookmarking, but the bookmarks not appearing thing is something ive just noticed. anyway this is a new a/c if that helps.

So now I'm losing bookmarks from threads that they worked on until like 2 hours ago: ITT: LEO 'KING' MESSI - it won't add it now. Weird, huh.

Probably means there's a deleted post at the end that you can't bookmark. Try posting in the thread

I can't bookmark anything, same problem as useless chamber was having upthread. No luck with Javascript or traditional bookmarks.

I did manage to bookmark something accidentally a few weeks ago, before I was even aware of ILX bookmarks. I deleted that one and since then it hasn't worked.

I can't seem to bookmark the rolling pop 2010 thread, no matter what I do. some of my other bookmarks work correctly. this is a new account btw, created about a week or two ago.

had this happen before with a thread. iirc clearing my bookmarks & starting over solved the problem, but you might want to wait until someone who knows better how this stuff works to come by before you do anything if you already have a long list of bookmarks

I have tried now from both browsers (safari and firefox) to set a bookmark in a thread, but when I go to my bookmarks page, there's nothing there. (Even though the thread has new answers, nothing turns up at the top of my page, either.)

Anyone else having this trouble?

It let me make a bookmark on this thread no problem. It just doesn't want to with the spirituality/religion thread. Has that thread been de-idexed or something weird?

from what I've noticed (as detailed earlier in the thread), if you go to a thread that's had a lot of posts over a short space of time, then you can't add a bookmark. Wonder if stet ever got anywhere with it?

bugger all, sorry. is really hard to reproduce -- even after auto-posting at a huge rate to a new thread I couldn't duplicate it.

when I logged in this morning all my bookmarks had disappeared. it's not a big deal as I didn't have too many bookmarks anyway but was wondering if there was something wrong on my end or was it just server hiccups?

All of my bookmarks are gone now too (excepting one that I added today).

One longshot theory I have is that I might have accidentally hit the "Delete All Bookmarks" button, but I doubt it very much.

They don't appear to be working again now, at least not for me.

Try logging out then logging back in; there will be some cache issues going on right now.

Delete all your bookmarks every few weeks, it's the only way.

I had very few threads bookmarked and nothing that had been posted to in the last year or so, so I'm not sure. But I am having weird issues with the open bullets that indicate new posts. Some threads are showing open bullets and some still show closed bullets, even with new posts.

the thing with the bullets happens periodically when stet or whomever is tinkering with stuff. i'm kinda curious exactly what is being reset, but am probably too ignorant to fully understand.

The bullet thing is only strange in its inconsistency from thread to thread. No biggie.

I can still see all your bookmarks in the database. I'll force-empty the caches to reload them from disk and see if that helps.

I just worked out why I don't like it. It's because I click bookmark as I start reading the final post rather than after I finish - so if it's more than a single line post I don't take it in.

yeah, 1st and third both apply. and it's just jarring on top of that. my ilx experience of the past 24h has been decidedly unwavy.

i don't like this but i'll adjust i'm sure. also i am a self-motivating team player.

this is definitely bugging me a bit, but it's also being more useful at other times (and I know some people really like it). I'm just trying to decide whether this is one of those things we get used to really quickly, or we hate and change back, or we make a preference (and which way around the default is)

One slightly annoying aspect of it is, after you've whizzed back up top, for a brief moment the bookmark you've just reset is still present, so a quick click on another bookmark can, as the other bookmark disappears, lead you to click on the wrong bookmark. God what drivel. I'm sure it'll be fine.

OK, will try to articulate: days are long gone when I sit and read thread from beginning to end in one sitting and then dutifully consume each update upon arrival to the end of thread. These days have been opening a thread, scrolling down to around where I want to start reading (and then read backwards and forwards), immediately bookmarking that and reading some amount before having to go on to something else. I guess this is nonstandard usage, perhaps deprecated, but I gather I might not be the only one.

I think once I've got used to not clicking Bookmark until I've read the last post I'll be in favour of this, but maybe it could be set as an option in Preferences to appease both camps?

This actually increases necessary keystrokes for me, cause now I have to press backspace twice to get to the main page.

I'm running into the issue where board names are appearing multiple times on my bookmarks page - ILE appears five times, ILM five times. I deleted all of my bookmarks and it's still happening.

Is this still a bug?

Yeah, the bug is that the bookmarks are only sorted out into categories when they're loaded from the database - when you edit them by updating/editing, then the list doesn't get resorted until they fall out the cache and need to be restored. I'll take a look

I've never gotten the hang of bookmarks. They're always up top on my browser saying there's new answers when there aren't. Is there some way to mark those threads read.. other than just opening them?

you have to click "bookmark" on the most recent post in the thread to update your bookmark and remove it from the list. Making a post to the thread also updates the bookmark to your most recent.

(you can press the 'b' key on the keyboard to set your bookmark to the most recent post in the thread as well)

I checked ilx on the whatever-the-hell-the-Samsung-browser-is-called, and like every bookmark of mine was sitting there, active and new on SNA page. Is there a synch issue?

Yes, I have logged out and logged back in. Yes, I have cleared my cache.

This is a long-standing issue, and it seems to be related to Android/Samsung/something interfering with how bookmark updates are made. Have never been able to track it down, but i'll take another look
