Hi, could you please change the offensive and ableist title of this thread:

TS: Most Retarded-Looking Barenaked Ladies Member on This Album Cover

...to this:

TS: Most Leotarded-Looking Barenaked Ladies Member on This Album Cover

Thanks!

See, that's all I asked for.

eleven months pass...

since nobody seems to actually want to request this here rather than passive aggressively post about it in the thread....

can we lock this thread and edit the instances of the aforementioned word in the thread?

I disagree.

I'm fine with changing the thread title, but asking a moderator to find-and-replace a word on posts ILXors have made - when there are plenty of other words on this website that are considered more offensive - veers from not offending the offended straight into some doublespeak changing of history.

Let those posts stand and feel free to call out those posters when you come across them. Lord knows you could do a search on text I've posted and come up with worse.

xp people on ilx threads bitch about albums by bands not placing high enough in EOY lists, can a mod please edit the EOY lists to accomodate the desires of the people on threads?

sarahell, Monday, 23 January 2017 04:04 (seven years ago) link

yeah great comparison there, no, y'see, there's been a p large and vocal group of people asking for this to be locked for the last week in that thread (and for the last two years, really - only a few people were pleased with the thread title change. last fuckin time I act as anybody's intermediary.

EOY more like OY VEY

I was one of those calling for the thread to be locked. Not sure what was passive aggressive about that but I stand by the suggestion. Editing the posts themselves seems bonkers though - it would make more sense to just delete the thread. Which I'm not suggesting. But really it should have been locked a long time ago, imho - feels very out of step with ilx's present standards and if it were a newly-created thread I doubt it'd survive three days.

there are so many threads that have gross objectifying language about women that you should also delete if you want to apply the same criteria.

you people are so lame. don't you have anything better to do than dis artists you don't like? I have been a barenakedladies fan for 10 years and they have more talent in their little finger's than any of you guys have. your just jealous that you don't know how to make good music like they do. you probably like blink 182 or green day. just go back to your mothers basement timmy because you probably live with her and listen to green day and have nothing better to do than be on the internet all day.

this is otm, but I support nuking all those threads & then also the bnl one, where a whole bunch of people who I know to be nice folks get really super gross in their parsing of a word they should know better than to use, like they go extra "no no, they should be living in a group home! lol!" as if people living in group homes are great targets for ridicule and it's really pretty hateful and depressing tbh

It's probably educational for people to be able to actively revisit instances in the past when they unthinkingly used insensitive or offensive labels. God knows I'll never forget the dressing down I got when I was like eleven or twelve and my mom's best friend (who has a son my age with Down syndrome and who I pretty much grew up alongside) was visiting and I walked through the living room singing a particular cool song that I'd just discovered on a Devo compilation. Hoo boy.
