You can fake paragraphs.

By having a minor piece of punctuation on the "break" lines.

Just tested this on HTML Playground: it seems to work even with a space as your "minor piece of punctuation" on the line between the faked paras.

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 5 December 2021 00:02 (four years ago)

do tweet embeds not work anymore? just wondering if it's my browser/adblocker. they appear as blockquotes but don't load as embeds, for me.

towards fungal computer (harbl), Thursday, 16 December 2021 15:02 (four years ago)

fwiw i have a pretty aggressive privacy/adblock setup that causes tweets to behave like that for me

call all destroyer, Thursday, 16 December 2021 15:23 (four years ago)

I disable javascript (using noscript in firefox for example) and that prevents the twitter embeds.

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 16 December 2021 16:38 (four years ago)

your adblocker might have an option to filter out social or "share" stuff. that usually breaks embedded tweets.

(i.e. try disabling that option)

three weeks pass...

hi stet, youtube embedding is great, but would be cool to teach the regex not to try to embed links to youtube channels (which don't work), e.g. this post got mangled. obviously this is not the end of the world.

p.s. does ilx use log4j y/n?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 7 January 2022 17:52 (four years ago)

we have a strong NIH ethos here, so thankfully not

stet, Monday, 10 January 2022 14:52 (four years ago)

thanks for the channels nudge, will take a look

stet, Monday, 10 January 2022 14:52 (four years ago)

Hi there, what's the best method of pasting an image on a thread these days?

Maresn3st, Monday, 17 January 2022 23:59 (four years ago)

Still [ img ] tags. You have to put the address of an image file in between the tags, not a web page, and if you link to an image on a major social media platform, it won’t display for many people.

dark end of the st. maud (sic), Tuesday, 18 January 2022 01:01 (four years ago)

an integrated image thingie would be amazing but imgur works pretty well. as others have said, the ios “post to imgur” shortcut makes this a very slick process.

i would like to thank the ilx code cru for the hidden text feature without which the fun Semantle thread would not be possible

two months pass...

last night it kept asking me to login and I've had 5 of so posts that didn't post, just returned a blank page. something seems wrong, but it also feels like it'd be impossible to debug.

koogs, Monday, 13 June 2022 07:10 (three years ago)

happens to me too sometimes (maybe once a week?)

one year passes...

stet/keith or whoever is in charge of code these days,

*third guy to get handed the mic at the Q&A*

hello, a comment and a question.

first of all, as always, thank you so much, and with every year that passes i appreciate more and more what a special place ilx is and how much of that is related the beautiful simplicity of how it works. i don't know anything about any of that but i feel the benefits of your work all the same. thank you!

the question: as you're probably already aware, chatgpt is starting to crawl the internet:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/openai-details-how-to-keep-chatgpt-from-gobbling-up-website-data/

Without announcement, OpenAI recently added details about its web crawler, GPTBot, to its online documentation site. GPTBot is the name of the user agent that the company uses to retrieve webpages to train the AI models behind ChatGPT, such as GPT-4. Earlier this week, some sites quickly announced their intention to block GPTBot's access to their content.

In the new documentation, OpenAI says that webpages crawled with GPTBot "may potentially be used to improve future models," and that allowing GPTBot to access your site "can help AI models become more accurate and improve their general capabilities and safety."

i was wondering if ilx will move to block GPTBot as well. for what it's worth, i register as a hard "please block GPTBot" vote

z_tbd, Saturday, 12 August 2023 17:57 (two years ago)

...because god, it's going to be creepy if chatgpt users can really ask it to compose stuff in the voice of a particular poster

z_tbd, Saturday, 12 August 2023 18:01 (two years ago)

well i already do that all the time so

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 12 August 2023 19:09 (two years ago)

After I'd been posting to ilx for about 13 years my voice changed.

Won’t be long before there’s going to be some kind of Night of the Living Dead of Fake Tuomases, Fake James Redds, Fake Tracer Hands etc.

ILX is already in ChatGPT - there was a site which showed you which percentage of the training data you were, and we were high among the also-rans.

Block does seem like a good idea for all our vital future posts tho

stet, Sunday, 13 August 2023 10:52 (two years ago)

excited to encounter the deepest of our lore out in the wild

mark s, Sunday, 13 August 2023 11:12 (two years ago)

ILX had a number of prolific posters who contributed to its active community. Some of the notable and influential posters over the years included individuals like Sterling Clover, Andy K, Nick Sylvester, and Mark Sinker. These posters were known for their extensive contributions, insightful discussions, and sometimes controversial opinions, which helped shape the character of ILX as a unique online forum for music and various other topics. However, keep in mind that individual participation can change over time, and my information might not be up to date with the latest developments on ILX.

This isn't so much a question as it is an expression of puzzlement but...I just posted via Zing a short while ago and the DN displayed on my post is an older DN that is not the DN I'm currently using. Should that be happening? And might the fact of it happening have anything to do with the fact that my iPhone is old as shit (it's a 6)? I guess those last two actually were questions.

Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 00:52 (two years ago)

It shouldn't be happening – there's a weird situation in the code where it can keep two copies of a user around. You end up with two different sets of bookmarks and sometimes two DNs etc. I've never been able to really track the cause of it down, it's (probably) not your fault tho

stet, Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:51 (two years ago)

two months pass...

I’ve just got my first iPhone and the Bookmark Post links JavaScript does not work and instead go to a form to submit instead. Is that expected?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 15 October 2023 19:56 (two years ago)

download Zing Touch from the app store!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 15 October 2023 19:56 (two years ago)

Can’t view it in my theme though :D

Speaking of which I am seeing a load of rendering bugs on the iPhone I need to fix.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 15 October 2023 20:59 (two years ago)

Is that expected?
Yes there's some unreliability with iOS Safari that means it falls back to the non-JS version. Although that was (jesus) 10 years ago now so I should check that's still the case

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 10:33 (two years ago)

Feel free to send me updates to the stylesheet!

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 10:33 (two years ago)

One day! Been meaning to do it for a couple of years for general bugs.

Any idea on the bookmark bug though?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:27 (two years ago)

not a bug - deliberate behaviour: there's a non-Javascript flow, which mobile devices use because they were buggy back in the day. You can see it on desktop if you disable JS in site settings

stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:56 (two years ago)

It’s always worked on Android browsers though 🤷

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:15 (two years ago)

Yeah, I have a vague recollection of just stopping it doing the Javascript thing on mobile at all; however, that would've been just after the first iPhone launched, so when you say it's always worked on Android, well, it's kind of always not worked on Android, as when I wrote that bit of code, Android didn't exist, so it seems whatever mechanism I used to filter it out didn't work once Android appeared.

Keith, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:31 (two years ago)

FWIW, I was definitely using Android to read ilx every day for like two years before Android officially existed and it worked fine so thanks!

fajita seas, Friday, 20 October 2023 02:44 (two years ago)

I’m happy to take a look and suggest code to get the experience on iPhone up to par :)
