ya so cmd+enter works now

stet, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 15:11 (four years ago)

Cool.

Next issue: View Previous Page doesn't seem to work too well in MacZing for me. Often, like just now, I get a Turn Back You Poxy Fule! message.

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 25 August 2021 15:37 (four years ago)

huh, that's bad. next time it happens can you post here please? that will let me find the timestamp in the error logs

stet, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 16:12 (four years ago)

happened just now

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 25 August 2021 16:21 (four years ago)

nothing helpful in the logs, will take a deeper look when I get a moment

stet, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 16:39 (four years ago)

okay, no worries, no hurries, thanks

one month passes...

So we've got the expired Let's Encrypt certification here too.

*sniff* Goodbye, ILX. Signed, my 2009 ipad.

pplains, Sunday, 3 October 2021 03:41 (four years ago)

Do you use that a lot? I can turn on an http-only domain to make it work again

stet, Sunday, 3 October 2021 17:04 (four years ago)

I wouldn't say I use it "a lot." Usually around bedtime or when I want to reset a bookmark that a killfile has made the last post on.

Thank you! But don't turn on anything just for me.

Is the search function borked? I can't find anything

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 30 October 2021 09:59 (four years ago)

Seems OK to me. What are you searching for?

Being cheap is expensive (snoball), Saturday, 30 October 2021 10:26 (four years ago)

I'm search for thread titles in the user id section, is what I'm doing. Never mind.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 30 October 2021 10:58 (four years ago)

finally ilx needs an AI

What it's like. Havana Syndrome. What it's like. Havana Syndrom (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 6 November 2021 03:52 (four years ago)

has the thread title font changed? looks a bit odd on my phone.

oh, i did 'upgrade' to Android 12 this morning, maybe it's a side effect of that, somehow

koogs, Saturday, 6 November 2021 14:42 (four years ago)

(using mobile.css)

koogs, Saturday, 6 November 2021 14:44 (four years ago)

(looks ok in Chrome)

koogs, Saturday, 6 November 2021 15:28 (four years ago)

I'm using mobile.css and I see no change of any kind.

Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 6 November 2021 15:35 (four years ago)

screenshots...

firefox:
http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/Screenshot_firefox.jpg

but i swear it used to look more like chrome still does:
http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/Screenshot_chrome.jpg

seeing those both together it looks like a font weight thing, maybe a letter spacing thing. the firefox titles do look slighter than they used to. it's perhaps a bit more noticeable when the title is short.

koogs, Sunday, 7 November 2021 13:13 (four years ago)

(but no, it's not an ilx problem)

the hide text thingy is grebt but seems to be thwarted by line breaks -- could its effects be made to continue (like other such tags) until it reaches a /hiddentext ?

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 December 2021 01:05 (four years ago)

that would mean it would have to start in one div and end in another, which is hard. ie

div first paragraph with some h hidden text /div

div second paragraph, still hidden /h visible again /div

(the divs might need p tags but same thing)

koogs, Saturday, 4 December 2021 01:24 (four years ago)

okay, no worries -- thanks!

mookieproof, Saturday, 4 December 2021 01:35 (four years ago)

You can fake paragraphs.
.
By having a minor piece of punctuation on the "break" lines.

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Saturday, 4 December 2021 03:49 (four years ago)

Just tested this on HTML Playground: it seems to work even with a space as your "minor piece of punctuation" on the line between the faked paras.

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 5 December 2021 00:02 (four years ago)

do tweet embeds not work anymore? just wondering if it's my browser/adblocker. they appear as blockquotes but don't load as embeds, for me.

towards fungal computer (harbl), Thursday, 16 December 2021 15:02 (four years ago)

fwiw i have a pretty aggressive privacy/adblock setup that causes tweets to behave like that for me

call all destroyer, Thursday, 16 December 2021 15:23 (four years ago)

I disable javascript (using noscript in firefox for example) and that prevents the twitter embeds.

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 16 December 2021 16:38 (four years ago)

your adblocker might have an option to filter out social or "share" stuff. that usually breaks embedded tweets.

hi stet, youtube embedding is great, but would be cool to teach the regex not to try to embed links to youtube channels (which don't work), e.g. this post got mangled. obviously this is not the end of the world.

p.s. does ilx use log4j y/n?

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Friday, 7 January 2022 17:52 (four years ago)

we have a strong NIH ethos here, so thankfully not

stet, Monday, 10 January 2022 14:52 (four years ago)

thanks for the channels nudge, will take a look

stet, Monday, 10 January 2022 14:52 (four years ago)

Hi there, what's the best method of pasting an image on a thread these days?

Maresn3st, Monday, 17 January 2022 23:59 (four years ago)

Still [ img ] tags. You have to put the address of an image file in between the tags, not a web page, and if you link to an image on a major social media platform, it won’t display for many people.

dark end of the st. maud (sic), Tuesday, 18 January 2022 01:01 (four years ago)

an integrated image thingie would be amazing but imgur works pretty well. as others have said, the ios β€œpost to imgur” shortcut makes this a very slick process.

i would like to thank the ilx code cru for the hidden text feature without which the fun Semantle thread would not be possible

two months pass...

last night it kept asking me to login and I've had 5 of so posts that didn't post, just returned a blank page. something seems wrong, but it also feels like it'd be impossible to debug.

koogs, Monday, 13 June 2022 07:10 (three years ago)

happens to me too sometimes (maybe once a week?)

one year passes...

stet/keith or whoever is in charge of code these days,

*third guy to get handed the mic at the Q&A*

hello, a comment and a question.

first of all, as always, thank you so much, and with every year that passes i appreciate more and more what a special place ilx is and how much of that is related the beautiful simplicity of how it works. i don't know anything about any of that but i feel the benefits of your work all the same. thank you!

the question: as you're probably already aware, chatgpt is starting to crawl the internet:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/openai-details-how-to-keep-chatgpt-from-gobbling-up-website-data/

Without announcement, OpenAI recently added details about its web crawler, GPTBot, to its online documentation site. GPTBot is the name of the user agent that the company uses to retrieve webpages to train the AI models behind ChatGPT, such as GPT-4. Earlier this week, some sites quickly announced their intention to block GPTBot's access to their content.

In the new documentation, OpenAI says that webpages crawled with GPTBot "may potentially be used to improve future models," and that allowing GPTBot to access your site "can help AI models become more accurate and improve their general capabilities and safety."

i was wondering if ilx will move to block GPTBot as well. for what it's worth, i register as a hard "please block GPTBot" vote

z_tbd, Saturday, 12 August 2023 17:57 (two years ago)

...because god, it's going to be creepy if chatgpt users can really ask it to compose stuff in the voice of a particular poster

z_tbd, Saturday, 12 August 2023 18:01 (two years ago)

well i already do that all the time so

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 12 August 2023 19:09 (two years ago)

After I'd been posting to ilx for about 13 years my voice changed.

Won’t be long before there’s going to be some kind of Night of the Living Dead of Fake Tuomases, Fake James Redds, Fake Tracer Hands etc.
