Hey Zing is crashing on load for me now. I tried to check for an update but none was listed.

Sorry not on load. It loads, but when I select a board, it crashes to desktop (or whatever the equiv is on a phone), this is on iOS

TBH re: Lucene, I only used it because the database didn't support full text indices at the time, so ideally a pretty complicated mechanism involving batch processes and all manner of stuff keeping the search index up-to-date in line with the database could be removed and replaced with a bit of SQL.

That describes most Enterprise Architecture tbh.

Ha, well I don't really buy the micro services trend, but certainly, perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

my job is convincing people to write good single-purpose domain-specific services right now but it makes sense since they're all operations every damn app does and they all implement it different ways. half of those ways are to just hammer on the same database tables 24/7

Post search seems to be working fine, thread search seems to be working not fine.

i regret to inform the mods that the search feature is lagging for me too, preventing me from finding the gucci mane thread. maybe this will be enough to finally inspire some action from the leadership but i'm not hopeful.

I think it was a login problem. There's a funny situation you can get into where you're logged in but the site thinks you aren't. Clues are ads showing up and 77 not showing up in Search.

First rule of 77 board is you don't talk about 77 board.

ohhhh I know what it is: when you start a new thread it does a search to see if there are possible duplicates; the search is buggered right now so it times out on some small searches.

Ten bucks says back in the heyday somebody asked for some rule to stop people from making threads about 77 on non-77 borads and because that was such a golden age one of somebody actually did it because STFU

why am I being asked to confirm my bookmarks?

Either you have "traditional" bookmarks setting turned on in prefs, or you're using a device that it thinks is a mobile.

I posted this question a while ago to another thread, but no one answered, maybe this would be a better place for it:

Why does ILX have two URLS, www.ilxor.com and ilxor.com, both of which require a separate login? I normally log in via www.ilxor.com, and often someone adds a link to some thread, but the link address has just ilxor.com, which means that if I open the link I have to login again, change site preferences, etc. What's the point of keeping these two separate, couldn't one of them just redirect to the other?

it's for when somebody in your life is on you about posting too much on ilxor.com, then you can say "no no, I'm much more disciplined now, I'm really posting a lot less to ilxor.com" and technically still be telling the truth because you were logging in & posting to a thread about some reissue whose name you'd already forgotten by the time you hit post on www.ilxor.com, instead of doing the same thing on ilxor.com. and vice versa. vital service imo

If you remember, there used to be *four* URLS -- ilx.wh3rd.net and ilx.p3r.net all used to work as well. We did once make them all point to www.ilxor.com but people complained because they would log in to one site as one sock and another site as another.

Which is a terrible reason, really. Perhaps we should just canonicalise it. Would help with the SEO too probably.

if there was just some way to manually edit a url once it's in the address bar. probably we are years if not decades away from that technology.

if urls were converted to be relative to the root then the browser would fill in the right host.

stet, i think if you set the domain of the cookie to be ".ilxor.com" it will be shared between www.ilxor and ilxor so you'll stay logged in and keep your prefs etc
