Wondering if she was missing the point of some of those private clubs. Many of them around here and the rest of the South do require memberships, but they're available at the door to everyone, sometimes free of charge. They're labeled "private" for tangled reasons related to the hours they can stay open, and where they can sell alcohol.
Country clubs are a different matter, but even those private clubs she saw in Australia, it was my impression that they aren't exactly checking membership lists at the door or anything.
