I would pay 100 dollars to change the email associated with my account. I already pay $10 a year to keep the domain name for it just for ilx use, so I'll save money in the long run.

makers is correct as ILM would improve x 100000000000000 if it was possible to hide those dreadful polls

You can. "Hide Polls" in settings. Or, make like me and just leave ILM off your SNA list heh.

the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 14 August 2014 06:38 (eleven years ago)

That is for the standard polls only.

Add around 4500 Zing users to that regular users total as well (double !!, though they're mostly Zing Free. That'd have been a really great pint, otherwise).

i just bought zing, its better fyi ilxor.com iphone owners

two months pass...

you know what would be cool -- a 'remove bookmark' and/or 'mark as read' link that appears next to the thread link on site new answers (or any board view)

i feel like mine build up and then i can usually glance at the title and be like 'i dont need this rn' or 'i have seen the clusterfuck unfolding and will bide my time' or 'why is this even bookmarked'

gbx, Monday, 27 October 2014 21:10 (eleven years ago)

Most of my bookmarks are accidental

keep the meat alive: pampas grass (wins), Monday, 27 October 2014 21:10 (eleven years ago)

gbx, Monday, 27 October 2014 21:13 (eleven years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Monday, 27 October 2014 21:13 (eleven years ago)

I wish bookmark links didn't have showall=true by default - opening up a big thread via a link to an early post leads to browser meltdown.

sweet lids of the stars (seandalai), Monday, 27 October 2014 23:35 (eleven years ago)

five months pass...

the search function seems to have trouble parsing double quotation marks, fyi.

for instance, try searching for thread Donald Fagen, "Sunken Condos" (2012).

these search terms are successful:

sunken

"donald fagen"
"Donald Fagen "Sunken Condos" 2012"[/code]

these search terms are not successful:

"donald fagen sunken condos 2012"
"donald fagen sunken"
condos
condos"
"sunken condos"
"condos" 2012"

in general, if a word in a thread title or post is bounded to the right by a" double" "quotation" 'mark", it won't show up in the search results for that particular word. and if a string of words in a thread title or post is partly quoted and partly unquoted, it won't show up in the search results for that particular string unless the search inquiry reproduces the post's typography (w/r/t quotation marks) precisely.

...or something like that. I notice that the problem only seems to affect posts from about 2006 onwards. for example, just about every year since 2004 there has been a detrius thread with the exact same formatting in the title:

This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2004 (started by Eric H. (Eric H.) on board I Love Everything on Dec 2, 2004)

This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2005 (started by Eric H. (Eric H.) on board I Love Everything on Dec 2, 2005)

This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2007 (started by Eric H. on board I Love Everything on Nov 14, 2007)

This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2008 (started by Eric H. on board I Love Everything on Nov 11, 2008)

the search term "detrius" (with or without quotes) pulls up all detrius threads from 2004 onwards. but the search term "end of the year cinema" only pulls up the 2004 and 2005 threads.

tldr double quotes are problematic for the ilx search function. I just thought I should point out this issue.

ya I have noticed that for years, prob shoulda said something too

zjjjjjjj"

ejjjjjjj"

"fjjjjjjj"

pjjjjj "djjjjj gjjjjjjj cjjjjj" yjjjjjjjj

bjjjjj "mjjjjjjjjjjj" xjjjjjj

"tjjjjjj "qjjjjjj rjjjjjj cjjjjj" kjjjjj "ujjjjj ojjjjjjjj"

(it will take a few minutes for this post to be indexed, but then you can search for those terms in various ways and see what works and what doesn't)

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

googling "site:www.ilxor.com (search terms)" is p much the only way I search ilx these days

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

technically we could sidestep the issue from now on by unilaterally agreeing to only use British-style 'single quotes', but I find this be a completely un("USA! USA! USA!")acceptable solution.

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

stet come to slack

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

google only works so well though, xpost. for one thing it doesn't allow you to search for individual posts (you can use google to find threads that mention both Ron Sexsmith and Devendra Banhart, but you'll have to sort through a lot of noise if you're only interested in a particular post that mention both of those gentlemen)

on the other hand the ilx search function doesn't permit thread-wide searches, which is a limitation of its own.

the geographibebebe (unregistered), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:31 (eleven years ago)

Newspapers only use single quotes in the headers too.

pplains, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 17:38 (eleven years ago)

hi, I have a problem that only comes up on my Android phone. When I log into ILX in the Android Chrome browser, my Bookmarks do not sync with any other browser/device, so it looks like I have a million threads that I haven't read. Can't figure out how to get it synced up with my actual ILX activity. I haven't ever had this problem on any other browser or any other device. Is it a cookies issue?

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Thursday, 16 April 2015 13:11 (eleven years ago)

caek "stet" at this site dot com does the trick.

Moodles: someone else mentioned that, but I can't think why it would be. Bookmarks are stored server-side against your user account.

stet, Friday, 17 April 2015 09:53 (eleven years ago)

cn i have an ilxor dot com email addr plz

maybe like a "see last 30" or 50 or whatever threads that have been updated instead of just "updated within the last <time> ago". This would be useful for browsing boards that don't have a lot of active threads

los blue jeans, Saturday, 27 June 2015 02:14 (ten years ago)

Yeah I've already done that. I think it'll do the last 200 or so. I just haven't deployed it.

Keith, Saturday, 27 June 2015 14:24 (ten years ago)

cool!

how's life, Saturday, 27 June 2015 16:22 (ten years ago)

Yeah, neat! I tried to browse old Aeon Flux Top Level threads and couldn't even find out how to view them

Dan I., Thursday, 2 July 2015 18:40 (ten years ago)

My trick has been to search for "a" (no quotation marks) in thread titles for the board in question.

seven months pass...

I started one as an into to android programming until I realised how much work it was going to be and how much easier it would be just to change the stylesheet to alleviate all my niggles - stuff like making the bookmark link bigger and easier to hit, fixing the tiny text box and menus...

I'm probably biting off more than I can chew but let's say I wanted to do this ... pointer to get started? like for example, is there a way to get an output format other than html?

koogs, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 21:00 (ten years ago)

ty!

anything special with auth?

0 / 0 (lukas), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 21:06 (ten years ago)

(if I'm asking dumb questions that are answered somewhere already, please let me know)

0 / 0 (lukas), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 21:13 (ten years ago)

i don't think there was anything special with login. i appear to be using plain text POST requests, albeit to an odd page.

use wireshark or something to grab a login request from your browser and it should be obvious (LoginControllerServlet, j_security_check). i'm not entirely sure what i did here, lots of commented out code...

koogs, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 21:15 (ten years ago)

aight

0 / 0 (lukas), Tuesday, 23 February 2016 21:52 (ten years ago)

Login is a right pain in the ass. There are three different things you have to do, depending on whether you just want to sign in, want to add a post, or want to bookmark.

Suggest you start with logged-out functionality first, as it all works exactly the same whether or not you are logged in, in terms of displaying the boards and loading the threads. If you get all that done then you'll know you're going to get somewhere and it'll be worth considering the auth pain. I'll send you the zing code to help if you get that far.

As for the API, start with the "mobile device interface" link on the front page. For each of those URLs, just remove the ?stylesheet=mobile.xsl to get plain XML.

stet, Tuesday, 23 February 2016 23:51 (ten years ago)

hey lookit that, didn't know about that link

whatever it's the web it's irrelevant, AAAAAPS
