i might make this replace the "classic bookmarking" preference option

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:28 (fourteen years ago)

I persevered with an open mind but it's slowly driving me bonkers, mainly because I elect to do one thing and the interface does two xp

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:29 (fourteen years ago)

happy to go with the crowd though

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:29 (fourteen years ago)

in addition when you're at work and you scroll to the arse end of the thread and click 'bookmark' and suddenly origin of AIDS: "it was one guy screwing a monkey" is across the screen in 24pt

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:41 (fourteen years ago)

again, just drawing attention to the more salient new side-effects

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:42 (fourteen years ago)

I just worked out why I don't like it. It's because I click bookmark as I start reading the final post rather than after I finish - so if it's more than a single line post I don't take it in.

ERIC CANONTA FOR PRESIDETN! (onimo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:47 (fourteen years ago)

i also used to do that, and didn't realise until this change. It's still half-bugging me, but I do like not having to scroll or key to get back to the top

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:52 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't scroll to get back, I clicked SNA at the bottom left.

ERIC CANONTA FOR PRESIDETN! (onimo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

you need quite a deep window for that tho. and it's still two clicks

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

and another page load

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

I'm slowly warming to this new world tbh. I think of these small changes as behaviour control experiments.

Can I fifth this motion of dislike?

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

Please Stet, if you are considering getting rid of it again, at least poll it so we know where most people stand. I applaud this tweek and thing it's a vast improvement

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

was this polled before?

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

A little jarring but I see the point and suppose I can get used to it.

POLL Removal Machine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

i dont think the original bookmarking system was broken. who complained? that's what i wanna know.

beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

point me to the exact post where someone suggested this and I will flag it so fuckin hard.

beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:06 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, this isn't good.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

i will sb whoever suggested this

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:11 (fourteen years ago)

It was Stet himself!

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

bring it

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:22 (fourteen years ago)

like, are you folks clicking bookmark on the last post and then freaking out because you either haven't read it yet (I do this a lot), or because you wanted to click something else at the bottom?

Or are you clicking bookmark in a post in the middle of a thread and being pissed that it loses your place?

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

both of your examples are 5-year old posting habits for me, stet. btw, my anger about it is fairly lighthearted, if that didnt come though in my posts.

beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:27 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, i mean your first and third examples.

beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, 1st and third both apply. and it's just jarring on top of that. my ilx experience of the past 24h has been decidedly unwavy.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:31 (fourteen years ago)

i don't like this but i'll adjust i'm sure. also i am a self-motivating team player.

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

this is definitely bugging me a bit, but it's also being more useful at other times (and I know some people really like it). I'm just trying to decide whether this is one of those things we get used to really quickly, or we hate and change back, or we make a preference (and which way around the default is)

stet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:44 (fourteen years ago)

One slightly annoying aspect of it is, after you've whizzed back up top, for a brief moment the bookmark you've just reset is still present, so a quick click on another bookmark can, as the other bookmark disappears, lead you to click on the wrong bookmark. God what drivel. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

something i've just noticed - "Remove Bookmark from this Thread" doesn't do the bounce, but i feel that would actually be more useful

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

I like the bookmarking change, but I'd be happy for it to be a preference.

treefell, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

NV otm, it should go for "remove bookmark" to. Take it to the top, Stet!

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

OK, will try to articulate: days are long gone when I sit and read thread from beginning to end in one sitting and then dutifully consume each update upon arrival to the end of thread. These days have been opening a thread, scrolling down to around where I want to start reading (and then read backwards and forwards), immediately bookmarking that and reading some amount before having to go on to something else. I guess this is nonstandard usage, perhaps deprecated, but I gather I might not be the only one.

As I see from exchange upthread two hours ago.

I Can Only Give You Every Zing (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

for chrissakes you guys just because you have been doing something one way doesn't mean you have to do it that way forever.

it's been changed for way less than a day and i've already retrained myself.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

no, stet has retrained you

onimo, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, wake up sheeple

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I think once I've got used to not clicking Bookmark until I've read the last post I'll be in favour of this, but maybe it could be set as an option in Preferences to appease both camps?

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

My problem is that I almost never have more than one bookmarked thread that I want to read at the top of the page. So it is almost never useful to me, and almost always annoying.

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

These days have been opening a thread, scrolling down to around where I want to start reading (and then read backwards and forwards), immediately bookmarking that and reading some amount before having to go on to something else.

Describes me perfectly.

lukas, Thursday, 2 February 2012 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

This actually increases necessary keystrokes for me, cause now I have to press backspace twice to get to the main page.

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 February 2012 03:31 (fourteen years ago)

this bookmark thing is really bugging me

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 2 February 2012 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

New bookmark thing bad. Worst thing since hangnails.

beachville, Monday, 6 February 2012 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

eight years pass...

I'm running into the issue where board names are appearing multiple times on my bookmarks page - ILE appears five times, ILM five times. I deleted all of my bookmarks and it's still happening.

Is this still a bug?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 5 November 2020 03:50 (five years ago)

Yeah, the bug is that the bookmarks are only sorted out into categories when they're loaded from the database - when you edit them by updating/editing, then the list doesn't get resorted until they fall out the cache and need to be restored. I'll take a look

stet, Thursday, 5 November 2020 15:50 (five years ago)

hello, I’ve been having trouble because I’ve been unable to remove a bookmark from a thread. Is this a known thing?
