I'm in the middle of this amazing amazing book

and can't stop thinking about it. As horrific and hilarious as some of Bernhard's best work, but with a lot of tenderness at unexpected times.

Didn't know this was out - Melancholy of Resistance was amazing.

For once, just about every language but English seems to do better than English in terms of available translations.

Weird--somebody was just recommending Melancholy of Resistance to me the other day. Obviously I HAVE to buy it.

I thoroughly enjoyed War & War (best title by the way) and Melancholy. I heard that Satantango will be out in translation soon though I don't remember who's putting that out.

I have no idea who this is but the last name alone makes him worth investigating.

Krasznahorkai worked closely with director Bela Tarr for a number of years. The film Werckmeister Harmonies is based on Melancholy of Resistance, and it's astonishing.

I get there is a doom and gloom but its such a straight, unimaginative reading:

i read satantango last year! i'm hardly an academic but i don't really think he was seizing on any one sociopolitical situation and crafting a metaphor for it. you could prob just as easily assign biblical or existential concepts if you pushed hard enough.

a writer friend of mine is pooping his pants about the release of the world goes on later this year. pooping to the extent that it makes me curious about what caused it. what is the best place to start with Krasznahorkai?

Karl Malone, Thursday, 2 March 2017 03:13 (seven years ago) link

start with satantango. i wasnt a huge fan of seiobo though.

wmlynch, Thursday, 2 March 2017 03:24 (seven years ago) link

New best place to start is The Last Wolf, only 100 p and very approachable, but indicative of his style and concerns

I hear from this arsehole again, he's going in the river (James Morrison), Thursday, 2 March 2017 05:37 (seven years ago) link
