"The What-If Guy" Taylor Wilshire

I read a book that I want to tell everyone about, "The What-If Guy" by Taylor Wilshire. It's a chick-lit book with a spiritual twist. Main character is looking for her soul-mate and on the way she finds her self, (Self-Help-Fiction). Unfortunately it's not literature, or going to win a Pulizter, or has paragraphs that you have to read over and over and ponder...it's a simple, fast-paced, page turner that will make you laugh out loud. It's not a book for guys, and it's not for those that want to read something negative and depressing. It's for those interested in the power of love and forgiveness and those that believe in manifesting miracles...it's a keeper.

what if i'm a guy who wants to read negative and depressing books about the power of love and forgiveness? am i just FUCKED then?

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 1 October 2006 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

So should I ban her for spamming or are we amused enough to see what she does next?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:34 (seventeen years ago) link

well i don't know if she has it in her.

hey yo sarah ryan why don't you step up your game a bit?

Josh (Josh), Monday, 2 October 2006 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Let's see if she figures it out on her own. Give it two more spams, and then ban her.

It doesn't sound like a book that anyone around here would read in a million years, too many guys for starters. In fact 'Taylor Wilshire' says it all really.

these threads are my favorite thing on ilx right now

Nautilus Press - our brand of Self-Help Fiction is the blend of the two hottest-selling genres in the industry today, Chick Lit and New Age/Self-Help. This is bundling at its best. The fictional story entertains and captivates the reader while introducing Self-Help principles and New Age thought in a fun way.

a) My god they're trying to create a genre here.

b) It sounds like a fucking cult.

Leopold Boom! (noodle vague), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Why'd they decide to mix together the two worst genres?

wmlynch (wlynch), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

synergy?

Josh (Josh), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

do you think sarah ryan might stick around for a q&a about 'the what-if guy'

and what (ooo), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

i think she may have already moved on to the next web board with 'book' somewhere in its name.

that's the problem with these viral marketing types, they never wanna BUILD COMMUNITY.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 2 October 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

This "sarah ryan" would no doubt be right at home in a forum called I Love "The What-If Guy" by Taylor Wilshire - just like a hog in a wallow. She's sort of a monogamous reader, a specialist, an apostle, rather than a generalist.

I loved Wilshire's What if Guy-- Its tone is so breezy and subversive, but with a heart of vulnerability.

Carol Lynn Stewart- ForeWard Magazine
For readers who are hungry for fiction with real modern life, spirituality that is palpable, this book is a keeper.

Kirkus
Wilshire creates a sympathetic protagonist for women still searcing for their own way, effectively integrates corporate sales, wtih spiritual undertones.

Book Description
In a market where chick lit novels are plentiful this novel offers something different--a spiritual twist. Wilshire's funny, charming novel about workaholic, Ryley McKenna truly becomes the hysterical, self-conscious young woman as she spills her life's secrets to a her best friend on a bumpy plane ride of finding her soul mate. Ryley's humiliation, spirit, and drive in a believable and entertaining manner. A fun, and relatable story, and easy reading make this novel a perfect escape with spiritual meaning from A Course in Miracles and self help tools.

From the Publisher
"Wilshire's first novel should satisfy readers from twenty something's and above. Ryley McKenna is in her late twenties, funny, independent, workaholic climbing up the corporate ladder trying to find her soul mate. After a break-up with her boyfriend that she wonders is her "What if Guy" she throws herself into work and tries to find love, but instead finds her authentic self. She is the type that is reluctant to non-traditional self help remedies, unlike her best friend. But some how a book called A Course in Miracles comes into her life, softening the edges of her stressful life. This very personal book triggers events that completely transform her and those around her. Ryley's adventures will strike a chord with all young women struggling to find their place in the world, especially those overwhelmed in their own life. This novel follows the classic format of chasing the wrong man when the right one will come when you are ready, or have a healed heart. "

From the Author
The What-If Guy tells a story of looking for a soul mate in a crazy stressful world and how to find peace along the way. This book is fun and entertaining--about a corporate executive trying to find love and in that process she finds her authentic self. It is a book of self-discovery and healing and most of all that miracles can and will happen when you are ready. I wanted to blend the idea of self-help tools, being able to manifest ones dreams in a light and funny way.

About the Author
Taylor Wilshire's path has included coorporate success and a spiritual quest. She's been the vice president of sales and marketing for a Fotune 500 company. After studing theology for twenty years, she became an ordained minister in 1991 and has taught seminars based on A Course in Miracles, a workbook focusing on spirituality and personal growth. The What-If Guy is her first novel, Taylor lives in California with her husband and two children

I've just solved my Christmas present problems! It sounds fantastic! Where can I buy multiple copies to give to my family and friends?

Oh wait, it's not a book for guys. Just the one copy for the Mrs, then.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:27 (seventeen years ago) link

But, wait, so the author's previous book is the deus ex machina in this book? I can't wait until Josh is collecting examples of books in which the author appears!

I'd like to see more genre mash-ups. The horror/cookbook is long overdue.

Speaking of genre mash-ups has anyone perused 'Kafka's Soup'? I swear it had both my hemispheres firing at once in a very strange way.

Hey Guys! Thanks for all the positive comments! The What-If Guy is a book for chicks not guys. But you never know you might like it...before you pass judgement on it why don't you read it first, and then say something insightful you might just get some insight on women.

sarah ryan (sarah ryan), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Gee, sarah - you've read it. What sorts of insights might we gain?

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Every time this thread comes back, I see beyond the false facade, Philip K Dick style, to the real thread behind it, The What-If Guy: Arthur C. Clarke.

you can email the chick who wrote this (and the inspiration for ryley mckenna?!!) at tgwilshire@yahoo.com

Is "The What-If Guy" suitable for chicks AND guys who enjoy the great taste of cock? Does it have that sort of crossover appeal? Because otherwise, there's no way I'm buying it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 October 2006 02:02 (seventeen years ago) link

"sarah" better stop posting threads about her what-if guy. i had to delete one today. i've never had to ban someone from the board. no more spam, please.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:05 (seventeen years ago) link

There was a new one?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:24 (seventeen years ago) link

If so, then perhaps we should ban her after all.

5:51 PM, 11 Oct 06 Great Chick lit book-for women only deleted by scott seward (enough already)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 October 2006 03:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, ban her. And it might be worth emailing Taylor thingy to let her know that her marketing people are the kind of cockheads that get themselves banned from message boards, not the kind of people who casually drop the names of amazing new books into the conversation at fabulous parties, which was possibly the kind of viral marketing Taylor might have had in mind for her opus.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 12 October 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that would make four threads she started, if not five. A ban does seem in order to me.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 13 October 2006 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link
