Only read A Princess Of Mars, which I know is trashy and racist, but does have one moment that has stuck with me: John Carter meets and befriends an alien dog, whose antics cause Carter to break out in laughter. This makes the dog hide and cower, because it has only ever experienced laughter before as a prelude to cruelty.

My wife swears by the film version of War Of The Buttons.

Cather or Soderberg.

Or Johnson.

I've only read Daddy Long Legs, which I wouldn't exactly call a good book, so I think I'll have to sit this one out.

Have only read Scarlet Plague but it doesn't get a vote because it wasn't as good as the other two of his I've read.
