Yiddish Policeman's Union is....ok? Affable but unmemorable.

Reluctant Fundamentalist is garbage, talking down to its audience as if the author were writing for the dumbest islamophobes. Add in a tragic dead love interest for good measure.

Alabama Song is basically the story of Zelda Fitzgerald. Lots of stuff about Fitzgerald and Hemingway being horrible horrible men, which I'm sure is all true but the prose is nothing special and there's something a bit icky about the end result of this supposed feminist re-evaluation being....another dude winning the Goncourt.

I haven't read the Águalusa but he's usually good shit.

The Vegetarian is strong, harsh stuff, gets my vote.

And yeah, Half Of A Yellow Sun appears on the 2007 wiki list, even though the article itself mentions it came out in 2006, no idea.

I should have campaigned earlier for John Crowley's Aegypt books, now I feel compelled to vote for Endless Things (the 4th and last) over Flights by Olga Tokarczuk and Half Of A Yellow Sun.

I have Darkmans at home and have read about 70 pages. Based on them it's going to be amazing but I can't vote for something I've read less than 1/10 of

Yiddish Policemen's Union, because I like alt-history etc. police procedurals/gumshoes and this is a good'un, w some research and invention and settings, also it's the only one I've read.

I'm striking out here again. The only 2007 novel that it seems I have read is "The Shack" by William P. Young. Not usually my thing but curiosity got the better of me, and it was bizarre enough to be interesting. Originally self-published, it went on to sit atop the fiction bestseller list for a couple of years and has sold upwards of 10 million copies. Father whose daughter was brutally murdered and is suffering from depression years later decides to spend a weekend in the remote forest shack where her remains were discovered, and there communes with G*d in the form of an African American woman.

Yiddish Policemen's Union I read twice, because I thought it would be interesting to revisit it after living in Sitka, and I still don't really remember anything about it. I didn't think it was bad, but it refuses to stick in my memory.

Truly light reading. Would like more about the island of Hasids & their boss (in The Sopranos sense).

A lot of authors I like here, but not a single book I've read except Oscar Wao, which is fine but not good enough for me to vote for against unknown competition.

Yeah, I liked Drown, but thought the novel was too stereotypical, predictable.
