Untergangers are real-life people who make Downfall parodies. In most cases, their true names are unknown (unless they reveal it themselves) and they upload most of their parodies on YouTube.

The term comes from Der Unterganger, coined by Bossimias, derived from the fact that most untergangers primarily use clips from the movie Downfall (Der Untergang in German). The feminine form, Untergangerin, was coined by PiretBCN.

Characteristics

The most important characteristics that differentiates untergangers from other YouTubers who make parodies off Downfall is as follows:

Untergangers tend to make multiple parodies off Downfall, and in almost all cases the majority of videos in their channel are Downfall parodies.
Characters in an unterganger's parodies are self-aware, and they tend to have a defining personality (for example, Otto Günsche is the Bunker's idiot, Hans Krebs is a mappophile, Hermann Fegelein is a prankster, and Alfred Jodl is the objector) which collectively defines a distinct universe from their real life counterparts.
Parodies with Hitler commentating or criticizing on real world issues are not the main concern of most untergangers; they make parodies for the Lulz.

To make their parodies, Untergangers take clips from Downfall (although non-Downfall clips, such as scenes from other movies, music videos, and footage found on YouTube are frequently used as well) and add their own subtitles. Their most common means of editing is the use of programs like Windows Movie Maker or Sony Vegas.

Their favourite activity is making Hitler look stupid and/or a victim of Fegelein's antics and creating other very funny situations.

Most untergangers also have a tendency to love Rammstein (and good music in general), enjoy the Trololo and despise Justin Bieber and MLP.

They also have a tendency to despise Nazism and other such bigoted ideologies in real-life, and to frown upon bigotry and racism.

Many (if not most) core untergangers are avowed anti-Zionists who generally hold democratic beliefs, and stand against dictatorship. Some however (such as Shomronon and PiretBCN) generally embrace the opposite rule, and generated some controversy in the past.
Classification

Untergangers can be classified into which period they were making parodies. First-generation Untergangers are those who first make parodies on a serial basis. After the period when Constantin Film removes parodies off YouTube came the Second-generation Untergangers. The two generations can be differed by the variety of scenes used, differing amount of FX employed, and the degree of which parodies are crossed with other characters or memes that are not from Downfall.

It can be speculated that most untergangers out there are short-term, coming and going in a few months interval. Those who have a long-term commitment have been unterganging for years, some even dating back from 2009. Most probably, these long term untergangers inspire their more recent but short-term counterparts.
Activities

Apart from the routine business of making parodies, Untergangers are also known to collaborate with each other. There have been several awards established over the years, among which are the Unterganger of the Month and the Parody of the Month. One International Untergangers' Day has been established on 8 September as an unterganger-exclusive celebration, though receptions have been lukewarm for the two years the day occurred since its inception.

A circle of Untergangers regularly chat with each other in the Unterganger's Chat, and personal chats via Skype, Steam, etc. From here, the Untergangers socializes further in non-parody related business, such as playing games that range from Minecraft to War Thunder.

Jacek Fedorynski is a blogger and web enthusiast who runs his own website (jfedor.org). He is most known among Untergangers for developing a web-based Hitler video maker that let one create Original Bunker Scene parodies online and post them on YouTube.

The Downfall parody creator page consists of thumbnails of screenshots of the scene, with text boxes besides it for dialogue, indicated by the speaker (either 'Officer' or 'Hitler').

It has been called by some Untergangers as a "level 0" video editor, as no skill with any video editing software is required.

A common factor among many untergangers is that most of them don't speak English as their native language. When making English-speaking parodies, an unterganger can commit many mistakes on the spelling of the parody. This mishap is common among untergangers who are new in English-speaking parodies, or, in certain countries, use English regularly but are poor in writing it. However, making Downfall parodies can be a useful way to learn and improve one's English, if it is seen as such. Some of these mistakes include interchanging the words "there", "they're", and "their" as well as "your" and "you're".

There are also cases where the unterganger is so poor in English that their parodies lack complete coherence, or in extreme cases, make absolutely no sense, and they subsequently become (in)famous for their poor English. It has been suggested that these people use Google Translate, that does tend to output nonsensical, broken English when translating from certain languages.
Subtitles don't make grammatical senseEdit

In the end of the Hitler Reviews Scene, if Hitler is not saying "Fegelein", untergangers usually make him say "dammit", which, conjoined with the subtitles when Hitler says "Bringen sie mir Fegelein!", won't make any grammatical sense, e.g,. "I'm Hitler, dammit!"

The UA was created to replace the increasingly biased Downfall Parody Awards run by sole judge and jury notoriousrob01. It was conceived after months of evident favouritism on the DPA surrounding an unterganger in particular. Official wiki recognition of the DPA ended after June 2012, and now the wiki officially supports the Unterganger Awards.

Most untergangers also have a tendency to love Rammstein (and good music in general), enjoy the Trololo and despise Justin Bieber and MLP.

The last album that floored me was white chalk. I hadn't expected this kind of introspective tour de force from her. The wildness which apparently was never per se or natural was totally gone and suddenly there was this very vulnerable human being. LES was too much of an exercise in political history for me. Too much of a concept album of the very boring kind. I was never really interested in history. To be honest i don't care for it. It was an eye-popping story which lit up the internet: American college kids running wild in Mexico by braying “build the wall” to affronted Mexicans.

The party hordes who filled Cancún’s bars and beaches for spring break last month were apparently mixing tequila with Donald Trump Kool-Aid and insulting their hosts.

A Peruvian vacationer blew the whistle in a Facebook post, recounting how a group of Americans chanted the slogan during a cruise.

The story ricocheted around blogs and news sites illustrated with images of bare-chested, bikini-clad bacchanals around the Yucatan peninsula. Commentators weighed in, most condemning the spring breakers as embarrassing ambassadors of Trumpism. Others lauded them for giving Mexico a taste of the “bad behaviour” undocumented immigrants brought to the United States.

There is, however, a complication. The story is largely false. There is no xenophobic surge in Cancún.

“Trump? The breakers don’t really mention him,” said Jesus Bat, 25, out one recent night handing flyers for Divas nightclub. “If they do it’s usually to say ‘fuck Trump’.”

Mario Quijano, manager of the Caribbean Carnival cruise, agreed. “If politics comes up they usually say they didn’t vote for him. People are here to have a good time.”

Interviews with almost two dozen bouncers, barmen, cleaners, waiters and other service staff yielded similar responses: none had encountered Trump-tinged sentiments, spotted Make America Great caps or heard chants about the wall. Few had even heard of the incident on the cruise ship – including people who work on it. “News to me,” said Michel Rosales, 27, who plays Captain Hook on the pirate-themed excursions.

Interviews with spring breakers revealed bewilderment that anyone here would chant about sealing the border. “That’s crazy. That’s disrespectful,” said Josephine Berrick, 18, from Indiana, after disembarking from the pirate tour.

Christian Portale, 21, agreed. “Dumb. Disrespectful,” he said, sipping a cocktail at the bar Fat Tuesday. His friend Eriq Gloria, 20, an engineering student, said the only Trump reference he had encountered was a nightclub hawker who joked about not giving discounts. “He said he needed the money to build the wall.”

Such bonhomie is a far cry from the perception of America-first boorishness. But in an era of hyper-polarisation, fake news and alternative facts, it was an irresistible cocktail.

It began on 7 March when Anaximandro Amable Burga, a Peruvian who was on honeymoon with his Mexican wife Sully, posted on Facebook a searing critique of fellow passengers on the pirate cruise.

“A flock of Americans (it’s not clear whether they were drunk or in ‘full’ use of their faculties) started to sing the vomitous chant ‘build the wall’.” Amable blamed it on hated inspired by Trump, whom he compared to Hitler.

Several sites picked up on the post, including the Yucatan Times which condemned the incident. “This is just one of the many blameworthy behaviors that young spring breakers have shown recently in Cancún and that are described as acts of xenophobia and discrimination against Mexicans within their own country, which is (or should be) totally unacceptable.”

The story took off. The Mail Online, the Huffington Post and San Diego Union Tribune, among others, repeated the claims.

The Drudge Report, a powerful news aggregator popular with conservatives, linked to the Yucatan Times article with some commenters hailed the tourists for avenging alleged Mexican loutishness in the US.

Leftwing outlets, in contrast, thrummed with indignation.

“It’s one of the most embarrassing times to be an American,” Ana Kasparian, a presenter on the Young Turks, said in a segment labelled “chant believe it”.

A parody site got in on the act by portraying a rant by Hitler in the film Downfall as a response to spring breakers’ effrontery.

And then, almost as suddenly as it flared, the story went dark. The media moved onto fresh outrages.

Amable, the Peruvian tourist, did not respond to requests for elaboration. Over two days the Guardian interviewed 11 cast members, some on shore, others in costume on one of the company’s three ships. Eight said they were unaware of any incident with spring breakers. Three said they had heard of an incident but witnessed nothing firsthand. Maybe the chant was brief and happened without cast members present, they speculated.

Told of Amable’s account of the chanters, one performer bristled. “I’d have thrown them to the sharks.”

Ted Campbell, author of a guide book about the peninsula, said he saw no Trump-inspired behaviour or Make America Great hats during a two-week visit to Cancún in January on the eve of the president’s inauguration. “Nothing. It was peak season, a million Americans.”

Even so, he was not surprised when friends in Canada and Europe shared the story. “People want to believe that young Americans come to Mexico and do this. That’s the new media, that’s why things go viral.”

Social media has deepened the murk. An anonymous commenter on YouTube claiming to be one of the pirate ship performers said the chants were ironic – that the spring breakers were expressing hope the wall would keep them in Mexico, partying forever.
