Yeah sorry it is incredibly disingenuous to pretend that we all knew about this secret ILX Slack.

Half the people complaining are mad that the slack isn't more private and half are mad it's not more public. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW, COME BE A PART OF IT. But we have group norms and people will say something if you're a jerk, because we're all people sharing our emotional selves in real time to each other. Jesus christ it's not that complicated.

It's a conversation. If you can't imagine what the norms for that are, may I refer the reader to the mIRC era or whatever your preferred online dosage was. Mine was chatrooms, which is what slack basically is as far as I can tell?

Because that's perhaps what irks me most about it: if it's so public and open to any ilxor who wants to be on it, then why have some of us been kept in the dark about it?

I'm not on there, but the slack was advertised publicly on threads back when it was created I believe? Fair enough not everyone reads every thread, but don't think there was any effort for anyone to be kept in the dark.

i mean it would be pretty dumb for people to say repeatedly that the slack was open to all and then make an assumption that stuff posted there would stay hidden forever.

and i’m just going to say this once but this was all started by someone who was on the slack and from my perspective not adhering to community standards, who then chose to take their grievance back here and claim that no, it was in fact everyone else who was acting in bad faith.

This is a good point. It sucks to see someone get hurt as happened today.

i just want slack users to promise they'll post a lot to ilx too, because i really don't need to adopt another platform just to maintain the meager substitution for a social fabric that ilx gives me.

I agree, tbh, and no matter what the circumstances of how this all "got out of control," I'm more than a little flabbergasted that there are such conflicting opinions as to the nature of this Slack. Is it public and available to any ilxors? Is it invite-only? Can I get an invite if I promise to adhere to community guidelines? If not, why?

There's definitely a similarity to when 77 started. But one difference is that there was an explicit rule that you can't shit-talk another user who isn't on 77. (To be fair I'm pretty sure that rule was instated because people were absolutely doing this, but I think I joined 77 fairly late on so didn't really see it.)

It was basically private until an existing slack contributor had a drunken late night outburst and lashed out at several people and then deleted his inappropriate posts before most of the US woke up and logged back on iirc? And now he's mad at people on the slack for.............not being cool that, I guess?? I don't know why else he has gone around for weeks slyly mentioning it in many other threads and trying to get people stirred up. It's willfully disruptive and has directly resulted in people being hurt by passing conversation that's only still available because the internet is a curse.

The slack and almost weekly zooms were posted about here multiple times two years ago near the beginning of the pandemic so that people could have a more freeform, less publicly displayed conversation. With any community that grows, evolves and builds trust in one another it sometimes will get a little more closed off. How the fuck is this difficult to understand in 2022?

Loooool I joined the slack halfway through its existence when everyone else was already there and it has literally never occurred to me to search for my name. That is an insane overly online thing to do imo.

I think it’s a very human thing to do. People care about their reputations. And also this is the very thing someone did yesterday that led to their feelings being hurt.

learned today that shit talk and gossip are natural things humans need to survive as social creatures but searching your name to see if people shit talked or gossiped about you is bizarre and deviant behavior

I don't see why searching for yr dn is weird. I do it every so often to see if someone responded to me directly in a thread and I missed it. Like there are reasons to do so beyond mere self-absorption.

I mean, I agree that people should have a place to talk about others, blow off steam, whatever. But having it be easily discoverable seems kind of careless. There are some fragile people out here on the ilxes.

Like if i was a student and had my friends over every night to swap stories about how annoying one of our classmates was, and then invited that classmate to one of these gatherings, that would suck. If he felt awkward or hurt by the discussion, it’s not his fault for having accepted the invitation.
