It was pointed out in an ESPN chat that Puig's first month in the majors was quite similar to Jeff Francoeur's.

also holy hell, I just noticed yesterday that Hanley is outhitting him.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 22 July 2013 15:37 (five years ago) Permalink

May have discovered the walk--eight in his last 11 games. If he were to play every game the rest of the way, and continued getting up to bat at the same rate (3.87 AB per game), he'd have to hit .119 (24/201) to fall below .250. He'd stay above .300 hitting .224 (45/201), and he'd need to hit .274 (55/201) to finish up at .325. Unlikely he'll play every game, though, making all of those slightly easier.

He still hasn't had more than a mini-slump; .300-.324 looks pretty good.

clemenza, Monday, 5 August 2013 12:27 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah the mini-slump seems to be over, .390/.490/.707 over his last 11 games. his power has been way down since that first month, although there really wasn't any other direction for it to go

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2013 01:37 (five years ago) Permalink

so per this morning's BP podcast, a lot of "writers" are worried that Puig's "lack of discipline" will cost the Dodgers postseason games! Backlash sure can be funny.

Didn't read the article but I'm pretty sure if they don't bring puig up they wouldn't even be talking about postseason games

ω (carne asada), Thursday, 22 August 2013 15:55 (five years ago) Permalink

Hmmm, I wouldn't go that far... he's a 4-win player? That doesn't account for the lead over the Dbacks right now, unless you believe he Makes Players Around Him Better (TM).

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:20 (five years ago) Permalink

you can basically boil it down to hanely and puig

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:21 (five years ago) Permalink

they've both been key to the turnaround, sure, but let's not flirt with Shannon Stewart Syndrome.

Puig and Ramirez are exceeded in WAR by Kershaw and Ryu. Or Kershaw and Paco Rodriguez.

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:28 (five years ago) Permalink

Agree with that. Puig's arrival (June 3) and Ramirez's return (June 4) were almost simultaneous. The Dodgers have been 50-20 starting on June 4. (If you wanted a counter-argument, they didn't start winning immediately: from June 4 to June 21, they were 6-10. That's when they took off.)

But I do believe that the arrival of certain players can spark a team in ways that can't be measured, sure, though not in the way Morbius dismisses the idea.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 August 2013 16:30 (five years ago) Permalink

Dodgers big turnaround was stabilizing their rotation with Kershaw-Greinke-Ryu-Nolasco-Capuano. They had 8 starters going into the season and were on their 9th in about 2 weeks. The bullpen turnaround with the intro of Withrow and promotion of Paco and Jansen to higher leverage situations staunched the bleeding there. Hanley replaced mendoza line production from SS. Puig made up for the complete absence of Kemp, and Either started hitting higher than .220.

Interesting "Hey Bill":

Who would you rather have, Puig or Bryce Harper?
Asked by: Steve9753

Answered: 9/11/2013
Not sure. To me, Puig is in a line marked by Vladimir Guerrero on the one end and Jeff Francoeur on the other. He's certainly out-played Harper this year.

Puig's been great, but long-term, I sure would feel a lot safer with Harper.

Weird that four voters thought him ROY, but not outlandish, I guess--6.3-5.0 isn't that big gap in WAR. If you look at historical context, though, not to mention Cy Young stats for a team that lost 100...

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 03:48 (five years ago) Permalink

I'm being silly. When you think about how much of an early jump Puig had, and all the attention he attracted, 26-4 is a very reasonable result.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 November 2013 04:04 (five years ago) Permalink

puig would have been a deserving ROY in a lot of other years (and in the AL this year). and i generally think the gap between him and jose has been overstated

Walks, doubles, and, um, triples up, homers down. His drop in WAR is attributable to defense.
