This kid on the Ohio team has a bat waggle and is late on every pitch. Wonder why. (Might be the same kid who appeared to be a mini-Reuschel on the mound, albeit with sub-Weaver composure, during a pre-Williamsport game.)

Other Ohio player scores points for repping Ryan Freel and wearing glasses from the Devoto Collection.

85-pitch rule is BS.

does this seem kinda gross/exploitative to anyone else

cankles, Monday, 27 August 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes -- especially the cameras' adeptness at catching crying kids and then staying on them.

Apparently this ended dramatically.

I guess it shouldn't be on TV, but my childhood neighbors Chula Vista are kicking some serious ass. They had a 6'2" 13-year old!

He got hit in the ear with a 75-mph fastball and basically smirked in the face of the lady who came out to check up on him. They made him stand on one leg, and touch his nose with his eyes closed.

umpiring in the LLWS is honestly an insult to baseball

curacao was hilarious tho - in the first inning the pitcher gave up 5 ER but 0 hits (like a 12 year old ollie perez) & then that dude smacked a homer and pimped it so hard

Yeah, it was 3-0 through 5, and then the wheels came off. Final score: 14-0.

Observations:

LLWS Catchers: You don't need to frame every pitch. Srsly, you look like an idiot when you try and pull one back that's a foot outside.

There are some ill Big Sisters with the Staten Island team. It could just be in relation to Iowa.

The cage helmets are gay and sad.

LLWS Players: Come up with your own tics. The Jeter hand at the umpire is gay and sad. Besides, you should be really trying to play like that dashing Jimmy Rollins.

The names of the Curacao players in the Little League World Series are lyrical, almost poetic: Deshandro Tromp, Curley Martha, Furgentley Jamanica, Fran-J Confesor, I-Zion Mogen, Pe.son Revierre -- and managed, of course, by Michelangelo Celestina

My friends' nephew went 2/5 last night (2 doubles) but with his speed he stretched 2 infield grounders into forced errors pulling the 1B off the bag. Big win for the underdogs to advance to the (USA) final.

After golf, we were in a bar watching the Hawaii-Virginia game last night. The guy beside me said he played in the 1952 Series in Williamsport, on a team out of Toronto's High Park. I asked him if played against anyone notable, but he couldn't remember anybody.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:53 (five years ago) link

That was the game I was watching as well.

Thanks! Will print that off and take it to golf next week. I would have seen your friend's nephew...I assume Hawaii went on to win? They had a big lead when I left.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 August 2019 22:02 (five years ago) link

Yeah, he bats 4th or 6th depending on who's pitching.

Forgot to mention that he stole home as well:

I was thinking about the guy from golf, and he has to have that year wrong. If he played in '52 as a 12-year-old, he'd be 79. I golfed with him yesterday--besides the fact that he didn't look 79 (maybe mid-'60s), and besides the fact that he scored well (~40 for 9), he was hitting the ball 200+ off the tee. 79-year-olds don't do that.

so very proud of Lake Mary for making it this far. I played in this league in its inaugural season. I will admit, I didn't even realize they were still around. the league formed somewhere around 1992 or 1993 and it was up against some FIERCE competition from established leagues like Babe Ruth and Pony, and the first year, it was basically just filled with defectors from those leagues. there were only four teams the first season, the As, Braves, Cubs, and White Sox (my team).

I was also on the first ever All-star team, but uh...we didn't exactly get far like this year's squad, losing back to back 16-2. very tiny city, about 15-20 minutes out of Orlando - a bit on the posh side, the high school was definitely full of 'rich' kids.

watching these games stresses me out though, like....having to be on tv at that age and hearing people who normally call pro games dissecting your play, man that's a lot.

They won!!!
