Citi Field, the Mets’ new home for 2009, is slowly but surely taking shape. A portion of the main concourse along the first-base line, a pile of steel bars now, should be filled with concrete by opening day.
By June, the entire first-level concourse is expected to be finished, and some of the exterior of the building will be up, too.
“We’re on schedule,” Jeff Wilpon, the Mets’ senior executive vice president, said yesterday as he led a group of reporters who regularly cover the team around the construction site. “We may even be ahead of schedule.”
The backside of the ballpark will come later, and installing the dirt, grass and field will be among the final steps. Yesterday, home plate was indistinguishable from center field. Each was a pile of gravel.
Next week, the Mets will install a camera on mets.com that will show daily updates of the construction.

Steven Goldman, last Friday:
Fascinating thing about the Mets: their ERA has risen in every month of the season. From April onwards: 2.96, 3.73, 4.20, 4.50, 4.93, 5.16. In this, we could argue that the Mets' shocking last-minute fade shouldn't be all that shocking and isn't terribly last minute. I suspect if I had been writing the "Metsstriped Bible" at that time I would have been inveighing against the elderly nature of the Mets staff, arguing that oldsters are more prone to fading over the course of the season. That's not the whole story, of course; the lineup has been carrying too many dead spots all season. Unfortunately, this was a season in which there wasn't much to be done in the way of trading. Teams that needed to win through maneuver couldn't make adjustments. Omar Minaya is big on upgrading his team on the fly, certainly far more so than Brian Cashman, but between the weaknesses of the Mets' farm system and the lack of attractive options on the market, his hands were tied.
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link
here's a peace offering of sorts -- i'm just as surprised that the mets collapsed as thoroughly as they did as anyone else. as pitiful as the mets' pitching had been the past month, i'd still take them over the phils' staff (God, i was cringing all throughout saturday's game on account of the pathetic-ness that is adam eaton).
― Eisbaer, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Nate Silver on the biggest collapses (last week):
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6764
1. 1995 California Angels
Peak Playoff Probability: 99.988% after games of August 20th Odds of Collapse at Peak: 8,332-to-1 against Record at Peak: 66-41, 9.5 games ahead of the Rangers and 12.5 Games ahead of the Mariners in the AL West; 12.0 games ahead of the Yankees for the Wild Card Record after Peak: 12-26
I posed this in the form of a trivia question to our internal mailing list: Which team had the worst playoff chase collapse of all-time? I got one guess for the 1964 Phillies, one for the 1978 Red Sox, one for the 1962 Dodgers (who rank 17th), and three for the 1951 Dodgers. Only Rany suggested the 1995 Angels, and that is because he has the best memory of anyone in our group (Christina Kahrl being a close second) and recalled Clay’s original article.
But in fact the answer isn’t even close. The 1951 Dodgers' odds were 384-to-1 against missing the playoffs, while the Angels were more than 8000-to-1 against. In fact, even if you ignore the Wild Card possibility, and looked only at the divisional race, this would still rank as the worst collapse of all time. With 38 games left to play, the Angels a combined 24.5 games ahead of the Mariners and Yankees, the two teams that would eventually pass them in making the playoffs. It took a perfect storm of events to knock the Halos out of the race—two distinct losing streaks of nine games apiece, plus the Yankees and Mariners each winning two-thirds of their games—and even then they still had the chance to redeem themselves in a one-game playoff against the Mariners. It's interesting to also note that if the Mariners had blown that playoff game, because the Angels played so badly that the M’s opened up a three-game lead at one point, the '95 Mariners would rank 13th on this list.
...The Mets (99.80 percent on September 12th) would rank second all-time if they miss, making good on a 500-to-1 shot against.

It was the Post:
"We've been throwing four innings a night, for months! Our pitching coach has no experience talking to a bullpen. He can help you mechanically, but he can't tell you emotions. He has no idea what it feels like. And neither does Willie. They're not a lot of help, put it that way." --Mets closer Billy Wagner, in comments reprinted in the New York Post.
"I don't want people to misinterpret what I was saying. I wasn't trying to knock Willie or Rick, because they've been great. As bad as we've played, they've been the most supportive coaches I've probably been around." --Wagner, clarifying his comments.
"This is not the time for this kind of article to come out. We believe in Willie. We believe in Rick. And we wouldn't be where we're at today if it wasn't for their leadership, and constantly patting us on the back and kicking us in the butt." --Wagner
"It's never about me. I want that clarified--it's not about me. It's the results that we're dealing with. I definitely don't want to sound like I'm trying to be a loud mouth, or a leader of this team. Because I'm not the leader of this team." --Wagner (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)

In a way I think the Mets collapse is worse than that of the 1995 Angels, just because of the fewer number of games involved (i.e. the swiftness of events) and the fact that they never really recovered at any point (the 1995 Angels, 1993 Giants, 1978 Red Sox all collapsed, and then caught fire at the end to tie up the division again).

I think the significance of the Mets collapse is also coupled with the fact that they had one of the weakest schedules in the league, playing much of that stretch at home.

att Steve Shasta (from Newsday):
John Maine showed up Monday, but not to pack his locker. He came by Shea to pick up MRI film of his left hip, which he will have examined further Tuesday in Philadelphia. Maine revealed that he had been hurting from a sore hip since the All-Star break, which may explain why he went 5-6 with a 5.53 ERA in 15 starts in the second half of the season.
"It bothered me all year," Maine said.
He seemed fine on Saturday, when Maine struck out 14 and carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before Paul Hoover's two-out dribbler ruined his shot at history. Maine's gem kept the Mets' playoff hopes alive, only to see then dashed 24 hours later.
"It still doesn't feel like the season is over," Maine said.
Told about the fans' misery, he added, "I don't think they're as disappointed as we are. We worked harder than they did to not do it."
