As part of the only Division Series that will not begin play until Wednesday, the Mets have a little more time to set their 25-man roster for the series against the Dodgers.

But the Mets' plans became a little clearer on Monday, when the team announced that outfielders Lastings Milledge and Ricky Ledee and left-handed reliever Royce Ring would not be active for the first round of the playoffs.

Milledge, the Mets' top prospect, hit .241 in 56 games in his rookie season after making his Major League debut in May when right fielder Xavier Nady underwent an emergency appendectomy.

The 21-year-old Milledge was at the center of a mild controversy over the weekend, when a note that read, "Know your place, rook," was taped to his locker in Washington. He said the message referred to "a misunderstanding" with a teammate while the Mets were in Atlanta last week.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm a little worried about Randolph vs reality...

“He was very upset,” Randolph said. “Hopefully, it’s just something mild. … The doctor said it might just be a cramp.”

Hernandez, however, has a more dire diagnosis.

“I was sprinting in the outfield,” Hernandez told Newsday. “And I pulled my right calf. It’s not a cramp.”

Of course I read this as "douchebag2.htm"

Phillips: so brutal, so loud. He sounded like a field reporter ("This unforgivingly punishing 80-degree heat could be wearing on Lowe!!"), like he was raising his voice to be heard above a crowd, so it would surprise me whenever they'd show him in the booth.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 5 October 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, it's almost that Fran Healy "talking dog locked inside a car" voice, along with the boobishness.

Funniest broadcaster comment I heard recently: "He's pacing around like an expectant father," said in regards to a troubled looking manager [I think it was Frank Robinson] during a game.

Also, Cliff Floyd has started a postseason blog over at MLB.com.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 5 October 2006 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Why does Vin Scully get no love when it comes broadcasting in the post season? Its not like hes some local homer schlub like Rex Hudler or something. Perhaps its because he's usually alone in the booth and has wouldnt play well with Joe Buck.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 5 October 2006 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Fox andESPN have to stick with their "brand," ie assheads cept for Jon Miller.

Joe Sheehan:

"Orlando Hernandez is more famous than Joe Beimel. He’s made more money in this game, earned more accolades, and in a vacuum, might be a better pitcher. But in the context of this series, his loss doesn’t mean as much as the loss of Beimel does. If the Dodgers could wave a wand and undo both injuries, they’d come out ahead in the deal."

Endy Endy Endy. What a guy.

I also agree: great "clutch" bunting/sacrificing in the game by the Mets.

Great job wearing Kuo out, esp in 2nd (27 pitches).

It'd be great if I didn't have to attend Game 5 Monday.

“I won’t be able to run like that when I’m 48,” Floyd said. “I can barely run like that now.”

Will Carlos Delgado run like that at age 48?

“I wouldn’t want to,” he said. “If I’m still a baseball player when I’m 48, please slap me silly.”

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:56 (seventeen years ago) link

"The Dodgers have won a total of one playoff game since they took the '88 world series. And who was pitching in that one game? Mr. Jose Lima, of course."

I think the Dodgers ran their clutchitude mojo hand down to nothing winning that freaking World Series with Orel, a gimp off the bench and Mickey Hatcher.

Poor Cliff. I guess the only good news is that if the Mets win this game he'll have 3-4 off days to recover if it's only a reinflamation or strain and not something serious.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

ESPN News coverage 9:30-10:00: two separate segments on the great Yankees implosion, the first barely mentioniong the team that beat them, the latter completely about a rod. THIRTEEN MINUTES OF YANKEES.

OH BY THE WAY: Mets and Tigers advance. They had some highlights during their games, so good for them.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Cliff Floyd - out for NLCS with strained Achilles tendon?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Isnt the team better off with Endy Chavez anyway? I guess the bench will be a bit more depleted, but you get a new roster for the next series, correct? I guess Millege might be around for the NLCS.

My post up there is kinda surly because I was drunk as hell last night. Mets owned us in this series tho. At the very least, I hope Loney's performance tonight secures him the 1B job for next season. I can do without Nomar.
