Good Mid-Season Fantasy Leagues (for beginners)?

I just got interested in baseball for the first time (just finished Moneyball), and I am thinking about joining a mid-season league. Does anyone have any tips for me, i.e. sites to steer toward or stay away from, things to keep in mind, etc.? I think I have to join soon if I want to do it, so the sooner, the better.

Oh yeah, and if by any chance this intersection is possible, cheaper is better for me. Especially since I'm a beginner, a free league would be awesome, although I'm not sure how possible that is mid-season.

They usually have midseason leagues, they might not have opened them up yet.

Also Dave M, your enthusiasm will be quickly tempered when you realize that most of fantasy baseball is built upon those 100-year-old boxscore stats that Moneyball deemed archaic and not the best measurements of a player's worth.

this is my first year playing fantasy baseball, and that has not tempered my enthusiasm at all! who gives a fuck about those moneyball faggots?

Thanks for the help. I actually found that you can start a league any time at Sportsline, so I did that, and there are some Moneyball-friendly statistics type leagues even. Also, if anyone wants to thrown in (metaphorically, i.e. no money involved) with me on this league, that would be awesome. I need at least five more people (maybe six) by tomorrow (!). Just respond or email me and I'll send an invite.

Puh-lease help! If anyone is even mildly interested in this, let me know so you can sign up before midnight ET tonight. I would appreciate not having to recreate the league all over again. Okay, last time.

So should I pick Cole Hamels off the waiver wire in my keeper league.
