why is homosexuality in baseball so taboo? what challenges await the first player out of the closet?
Kindly reflect on your opinions of same-sex forbidden acts off the diamond.

If I would have known that playing ball was so erotic I wouldn't have hid out in the locker room in high school. This is one hot book. Never have I wanted to play more with the team! This novel oozes with all kinds of wetness, sweat--all delicious things!

No shit! I think baseball has the sexiest uniforms and I'm not sure why I find them more attractive than those which reveal more flesh.

I was until recently a regular on a gay sports fan BB, which I left because there were too many Log Cabin Republicans and assholes. It was generally deduced that Doug Glanville was the Out editor's bf.
I read Dave Pallone's book years ago, he described an affair with a NL middle infielder that I guess (pray) to be foxy Astros 2B Bill Doran.

"I mentioned [the teal uniforms] to the Phillies organization and told them that's why I loved the team," said Glanville. "The [current road] greys are pretty cool, but I like that P they used to have, I don't really like the Phillies across the front. We'll see what we can do. Maybe if I establish myself a little bit, I can try to lobby for a change back [to the teal uniforms]."

The original column didn't leave that many clues: it pretty much said he was not the biggest star on his team, but a recognizable figure. And that he played on the East Coast.
Apparently, it was the anonymous article written by the player a year later that directed people to Glanville. (Which I'd love to read, but it doesn't appear to be online.)

A euphemism?

Not in my opinion (aside from Cotts and Hardy), but...
TOP TEN REASONS FOR GAY MEN TO WATCH BASEBALL
1. C.J. Wilson, relief pitcher for the Texas Rangers. 6’1, 215, 26 years old. He is just plain hot and has an amazing myspace page to boot.
2. Adam Loewen, Pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. 6’4, 215, 23 years old. So hot when you watch him play. Most generally the pictures on the team pages don’t do the players justice and most of the guy on this list are examples of this. Do me a favor and Google him.
3. Wily Mo Pena, right-fielder for the Boston Red Sox. 6’3, 245, 25 years old. He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, cause he is a big boy, but sometimes that can be suuuch a good thing.
4. JJ Hardy, shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers. 6’2, 190, 24 years old. Those eyes could have me being his slave for the remainder of my days. He is just memorizing. Even the horrible picture of him on the team page makes him look like my next ex-boyfriend.
5. Neil Cotts, relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. 6’1, 200, 27 years old. He is a little twinkish, but his boyish good looks are just the ticket to the ballpark. And every time he throws a pitch, you get a great view of his butt.
6. Xavier Nady, right-fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. 6’2, 210, 28 years old. He is born in Carmel, Calif., and has that California boy look. Beautiful face and a smile that is paralyzing.
7. Carlos Quentin, right-fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks. 6’1, 225, 24 years old. Another right fielder, there must be some kind of hot rule if you want to play right field for a professional baseball team.
8. Brad Ausmus, Catcher for the Houston Astros. 5’11, 190, 38 years old. He is a little older than the rest of the group, but anyone who 38-year-olds can’t be hot is just stupid, cause this guy proves them very wrong.
9. Ichiro Suzuki, right-fielder for the Seattle Mariners. 5’9, 172, 33 years old. He looks so tough. I think that’s what I like about him. He is a very good-looking man, but it’s the tough guy image he likes to put out there that woes me. There is also a very provocative picture of him with his bat if you Google his name.
10. Lenny Dinardo, relief pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. 6’4, 190, 27 years old. He is tall and has long legs. You know what they say about long legs, long legs…big jeans.

The High Five
In 1977, Glenn Burke ran onto the field to congratulate his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Dusty Baker after Baker hit his 30th home run in the last game of the regular season. Burke raised his hand over his head as Baker jogged home from third base. Not knowing what to do about the upraised hand, Baker slapped it, thus the two together were credited with inventing the high five.[10] After retiring from baseball, Burke, used the high five with other homosexual residents of the Castro district of San Francisco, where for many it became a symbol of gay pride and identification.[citation needed]

But former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, among baseball's most thoughtful and intelligent players, isn't kidding when he says an "out" teammate could divide a team."For me, as a Christian … I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it's not right," he says. "It will be difficult and uncomfortable."

I'm fairly sure that most professional athletes have opinions on political and social issues that I would find abhorrent, if only I knew about them. I try not to think about that and enjoy sports regardless.

Right. Publicized bigotry from a person/player you respected and liked is something else, though.
