from today's NY Times:

"The Mets have the second-best winning percentage on opening day for any team in baseball history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Mets are 27-17 (.616), behind the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who are 5-3 (.625)."

YAY ELIAS for pandering to dookie stains!

It's intersting & all, but whatever - BoSox have lost 5 season openers in a row (including one to the D-Rays).

yeah, my point is.....the Mets and Devil Rays, you know what I mean? I should've used the sarcasm flag.

I'm a Mets fan, by the way, lest anyone get riled. Actually, get riled -- it's more fun!

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 12:35 (fifteen years ago) link

indeed. o's have won 5 straight. it's the other 161 that get 'em tripped up.

Sorry aboot that - I figured you were being sarcastic, Hurl (even if my 2nd sentence comes off as a "lemme set you folks straight" type of statement). I should've used the "I feel ya & yr sargassum" flag.

Dude, I'm gonna be riled up & all frisky until the Red Sox hang a 10-spot on the Yankers today!

The '69 Mets lost on Opening Day to a team playing their first game ever (Montreal).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link

sigh. poor Montreal. **moment of silence**

well, at least they won that first one!

remember that year when the orioles just couldn't win in april?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

all too clearly. ah, the summer of rick schu.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Hardly the summer ... was it 21 straight losses in April/May under Robby?

At least the Newsday columnists' headline writers kept some perspective today:

YANKS: "Closing door on great era of Rivera"
METS: "Glavine digs hole and rotation looks buried"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Michael Kay, on the fans booing Rivera when he left the mound: "After all he's done for them, they're booing? Did they boo Sinatra when he hit a bum note?" No, they didn't boo Sinatra, because they would've been shot!

If a guy makes $10 million a year I should be allowed to throw saurkraut and pickles at him from the stands if I feel like it.

eight years pass...

D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall seconded that perspective.

"We are honored that Major League Baseball selected our franchise to participate in the first-ever series in Australia," he said. "The Diamondbacks take great pride in promoting our brand, as well as the greatest sport, globally. Being at the forefront of spreading international goodwill on this prominent stage is a feat that we enthusiastically embrace and accept."

"Diamondbacks third basemen Martin Prado was later overheard saying "FUCK, we have to go all the way to fucking Australia to open the season? God DAMMIT. Did Derrick Hall lose a bet or something? I know I'm well paid and I shouldn't complaining, but christ this is annoying."

"The Dodgers are absolutely ecstatic to be opening the 2014 championship season in Sydney, one of the greatest cities in the world," Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said. "Our organization is committed to growing the game of baseball internationally, and I'm eager to kick off our season in one of the most exciting and rapidly developing baseball markets on earth."

"When asked for a reaction, Dodgers terrible reliever Brandon League said simply "Fuck! Fuuuck!"
