Oscar Gamble i believe is on all the shirts.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Oscar was no Mike Morgan, transactionwise! That could easily pass for Bake McBride and assorted A's of the era.

I also lost a Birmingham Black Barons adjustable that the Mets gave out one Negro Leagues Day (a prom owhich seems to have been retired). There's a Negro Leagues store on 5th Ave in Brooklyn I've never shopped at.

There's a really great Oakland Oaks shirt I saw in a SF window once but didn't buy -- were they solely an ABA franchise, or was there a minor-league baseball team with that moniker too? I've seen the ABA shirt with the same anthropomorphic acorn, but it's different from the one I bypassed.

5th Avenue and what? I should check that out.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The Oakland Oaks were part of the Pacific Coast League professional baseball league. My XGF's (hstencil's least favorite XGF of mine) grandfather was a pitcher for them and she has a picture of him getting a swinging strike 3 on Joe Dimaggio (then of the SF Seals).

Dr. Morbs, I can easily procure the t-shirt because I know exactly what store you were looking at (hippy dippy t-shirt store 2 doors northwest from the corner of Haight/Ashbury).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

http://www.distantreplays.com has some nice minor-league/throwback gear.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 18 June 2004 17:16 (nineteen years ago) link

gygax! I have not met your other XGFs so there's still a chance. Actually I like her a lot she was just kind of a burden as a guest.

nice link milo, i did some consulting work for blue m@rlin a few years ago and fully endorse their product (even though they moved their production from SF to portugal and argentina 2 years ago).

THAT'S IT!

I'm not in a huge hurry for it, really, but thanks gax.

Fitted Yankees WS edition from 2000. But I'm more likely to wear my freebie - SF Giants PacBell Park hat from a game during the 2001 season.

How about pins, does anyone have a pin(s) on their hat(s)? I've got a mini Bernie Williams jersey pin on my Yankees cap.

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 18 June 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

when i was a kid i used to have a heinz pickle pin that had something to do with the pirates, but i lost it :(

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 June 2004 19:33 (nineteen years ago) link

gygax, what type of consulting work were you involved with at blue marlin?

metfigga (metfigga), Friday, 18 June 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

>How about pins, does anyone have a pin(s) on their hat(s)?

I'd call them "flare" re J Aniston in Office Space.

I have a Cool Papa Bell pin but don't like em on caps.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 June 2004 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Morbs, do you want to be the type of person who only does the minimum? Don't you want to express yourself?

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 18 June 2004 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

You got it. You know that rule where you take off the last thing you put on before you leave the house? (I know that's pants for most of you.) Mimimalism rules!

I limit sartorial expression to my Whitehouse.org shirts, mostly.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 June 2004 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

perhaps a subject for a new thread, but what major leaguers (current or former) do you have ties to?

my mom dated a dude who held the longest errorless streak at 2b for awhile when he played amateur ball in sd. i also think a relative of my mom's played a bit for the white sox in the early 1900's.

j.q. higgins, Friday, 18 June 2004 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

My grandfather played on a Navy team with Dom DiMaggio during WWII, I've got a softball the whole team signed.

gygax, not to be pushy or anything but i'd definitely be interested in hearing what you type of work you did at blue marlin.

when i was a kid i had that exact pirates hat but it was the yellow one with a black P and black stripes. i was a huge willie stargell fan.

hey stence, those 70s/80s phillies hats are de rigueur ... if random sightings of folks walking around NYC wearing 'em is an accurate barometer!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 02:07 (nineteen years ago) link

(i had one meself ... got it on "cap day" at the vet in 1979, wore it all over the place, and then lost it when i left it behind at my parent's summer cottage in vermont. realizing that i lost it was one of the saddest days of my pre-adult life!)

I know, Tad, but I couldn't find a good one at Citizens Bank Park!

four weeks pass...
A very good friend brought back a hat for me from Korea from the SK Wyverns. The only things I know about the Wyverns are that Troy O'Leary is not currently playing on their team and SK is some Korean telecom.

I got a Hanshin Tigers hat in Japan a few months ago which is really awesome, it looks like this more or less:

i have a det tigers, la dodgers, an OLD yankees that's into replacement stages of distress, a BK dodgers, a Reading Phillies which I rarely wear bcuz it's not fitted and... that's it> was thinking of getting a brewers hat with the old mitt logo...

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 03:20 (sixteen years ago) link

i did not wear a hat to the yankees/red sox game tonight.

i can't find my black mets hat, still. i wonder wtf happened to it? in the meantime, i have a grey pinstripey one. it's okay, but not great.

i am now wearing the goodyear hat from upthread.

hstencil, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 04:40 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.capitate.co.uk/MLB%20Caps/baseball_caps_reds.jpg

is what i wear.

Also, holy shit: Negro League Caps. These team names, jesus! I had no idea. Black Crackers? Clowns?

If I could only find pics of some of my old hats... I admit, for a while I had a Yanks fullback, but it's long-dead on the floor of my parent's basement, I think. I also had this amazing Charlotte Hornets tricolor "graffiti' type hat that looked NOTHING like graffiti so much as just poor writing. I had an early-90s Jays cap for a while, too. Nothing else springs to mind.

Will M., Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i'm still all about the cotton "franchise caps." primaries are 60s and 70s o's "fun bird" caps, but i also really like the clemente era pirates cap and the early 70s bravos cap.

I used to always wear a black Jays new era w/ gold old-school logo, but it was stolen. so this is my default along with the black mets hat first posted

francisF, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I have one official Tigers road hat, which I stole from my friend Tim.
One each of the Tigers and Red Sox franchise caps (I don't like these anymore)
One Chicago Cubs hat that I wore as a kid, which is twill with an adjustable strap (these are my favorite hats and noone makes them anymore, right?)

mizzell, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Are the A's wearing this hat this year? I haven't seen them play. It's pretty badass

Henry Aaron played for the Indianapolis Clowns. Back in the '40s, they would do Globetrotters-type shtick as well as play competitive games.

I wonder if that store on Haight has some new vintage caps / tees in? I thought twice about buying their stuff w/ this logo:

I kinda collect MLB caps. Which I suppose is slightly odd since I'm from Scotland...

I have these fitted caps:
Pirates (Black)
Pirates (Gold 70's style)
A's (Green)
Orioles (Black with orange O logo)
Mets (Black)
Nationals (Blue)

and these adjustable ones:
Cardinals (Red)
Red Sox (Blue)
Reds (Red)
Reds (White with red pinstripe)
Pirates (Black)
Mets (Black)

You can see a few of them in this pic here
