Your Baseball Hats

Prompted by yesterday's purchase of a black Mets hat:

(which I bought because I feel naked at a ballpark without one)

what hats do you own, and why? What hats would you like to own?

I also own:

(too small)

Old school Cubs bear with bat hat (can't find image that will load)

A Williams College hat, purple with yellow "W" in gothic script (can't find image).

Hats I'd like to own:

one non-baseball hat:

Official Red Sox hat of course, One non-offical sox hat, Detroit Tigers hat (for when i was magnum PI for halloween a few years ago), old skool O's hat, Bruins hat, Tiger Woods Golf Lid, Yankee Hater hat, a few random college hats, a Fresh Jive hat, a split hat, a st louis cards hat.

oooh I want a Tigers hat too.

also a 50s era White Sox hat.

i have:

1988 pittsburgh pirates hat (7.25)
2002 SF giants world series issue cap (7.5 to allow for HGH growth)

and finally, here is a pic of me in my 2002 seibu lions hat:

stence, you can have mine for free. im not sure what size it is. i've worn it once for about 15 minutes.

The one I wear most regularly:

I've also got the standard Cubs and Bosox hats, and an assortment of others that no longer fit my enormous head.

Chris I'm a 7 3/4.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i have one well worn, quite faded bosox hat that i bought maybe a two weeks after moving to chicago. i used to own a sweet-assed cincy hat but that was lost to a drainage pond by the side of rte. 95 in portland, maine years ago.

My M.O. on caps is to find one that I like and wear it exclusively till it unpresentable. Then I start the cycle over. Currently I'm wearing a khaki brushed cotton number (I prefer these because the tradition wool fitted caps tend to sit funny on my head; khaki because it will go with whatever I'm wearing) with the words "Houston Astros" surrounding a black circle with a red outline with "1963" inside the circle.

I'm currently searching for a brick red Astros visor.

I think that bear-with-a-bat cap is cool. A guy on my softball team wears one.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

One official blue Red Sox hat; one unofficial black Red Sox hat; one badly rain-stained unofficial-I-think beige Red Sox hat that's been through two hurricanes; one IU hat despite the baseball team being less than a footnote in the school's consideration of sports; one New Orleans Zephyrs hat.

What I really want is a New Orleans Pelicans hat, but I've never even seen one.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Late-70's Pirate hat (no Willie Stars, though)
Fitted red Cardinals cap that no longer fits
Modern Pirate hat with yellow bill
St Paul Saints hat from when I lived in Mpls

I wear the new Pirate hat because it fits best. I think I want an Expos hat--never got one when I lived there.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Tep - just consider it an IU soccer hat, maybe.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

main hat right now is a fitted cotton tri-color o's hat (70's-80's style); i have an unofficial cotton bosox cap that is just red w/ the blue b and fitted cotton wilmington blue rocks cap.

when i get a little more dosh, i'm getting a 60's o's hat, 60's senators hat and a tri-color expos hat. all cotton. wool doesn't mesh (ha ha) w/ my eyetalian constitution.

j.q. higgins, Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

A soccer hat! Okay, I can live with that. I'm still weirded out that they sell more womens' volleyball memorabilia than mens' baseball here.

it's not that weird...

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link

how do you get these 50s/60s caps, and do they look really dorky? i don't wear caps, but the stencil is right, they should be worn to ballgames. i want one of those 70s pirates caps. (MOOKIE!!)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a couple Tigers caps, three White Sox caps (one fitted cap I purchased a few years ago, and two promotional giveaway jobs) and, for some reason, I have an old Seattle Mariners cap. With the big gold S on the blue background. I bought it back in the late 80s or early 90s. I think I just liked that old logo. At the time that S looked so anachronistic. and I really liked Junior when he came up.

Non-baseball baseball caps include Detroit Pistons (yeah baby), Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Lions, University of Michigan (classic gold M on maize blue), Syracuse University, and um, Eric B & Rakim.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

non-baseball:

black independent trucks
norcal knit cap (with the california state flag knitted around)

hstencil has a trucker hat.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I've thankfully never owned a trucker cap. Unless the old mesh-backed "I LOVERMONT" cap I bought at a general store in Vermont when I was like 13 on a fishing trip, unless that counts. I don't know what happened to that hat, but I miss it.

I couldn't find an image of the Mariners thing so I uploaded mine-

Dude, that St. Louis Browns gear is sweet. I'd never seen that little devil logo before. I might have to get that cap.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Who's the afro'd Cub s'posed to be, Ivan DeJesus?

Only current fitted cap: black Mets cap with blue bill (I think hstencil got the black-bill model). Lost my vintage Brooklyn '30s and all-blue Mets.

Adjustable: battered Mets oldie, current Cubs, SABR logo tan-and-red, what I think is a Team Cuba (with flag logo, great fun at VFW halls), brown Brooklyn Dodgers football ('40s vintage).

Likely next purchases: Brooklyn Cyclones and Expos tricoleur.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:21 (fifteen years ago) link

The Expos cap is a popular one, huh? I was thinking before the season started I wanted to pick one up before it became vintage.

In the interests of full disclosure: I have a trucker hat but it's a non-ironic one (I think), since it's an Iowa Hawkeyes 1984 Rose Bowl hat that I've had since 1984. I haven't worn it in a long time. I also own a black fitted Iowa baseball cap (baseball being about as big of a sport here as in Indiana). I am planning to pick up a Tigers hat the first chance I get later this summer, most likely this guy:

Do the tigers still have the road caps with the orange "D"?

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's on a black cap instead of the home navy blue. I like that one a lot, too. And the orange would match my eyes...

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

my trucker hat wasn't ironic when I wore it to the Indy, er, Indianapolis 500.

Dr. Morbius looks good in 80s Met blue.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Oscar Gamble i believe is on all the shirts.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Oscar was no Mike Morgan, transactionwise! That could easily pass for Bake McBride and assorted A's of the era.

I also lost a Birmingham Black Barons adjustable that the Mets gave out one Negro Leagues Day (a prom owhich seems to have been retired). There's a Negro Leagues store on 5th Ave in Brooklyn I've never shopped at.

There's a really great Oakland Oaks shirt I saw in a SF window once but didn't buy -- were they solely an ABA franchise, or was there a minor-league baseball team with that moniker too? I've seen the ABA shirt with the same anthropomorphic acorn, but it's different from the one I bypassed.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link

5th Avenue and what? I should check that out.

The Oakland Oaks were part of the Pacific Coast League professional baseball league. My XGF's (hstencil's least favorite XGF of mine) grandfather was a pitcher for them and she has a picture of him getting a swinging strike 3 on Joe Dimaggio (then of the SF Seals).

Dr. Morbs, I can easily procure the t-shirt because I know exactly what store you were looking at (hippy dippy t-shirt store 2 doors northwest from the corner of Haight/Ashbury).

Also, holy shit: Negro League Caps. These team names, jesus! I had no idea. Black Crackers? Clowns?

If I could only find pics of some of my old hats... I admit, for a while I had a Yanks fullback, but it's long-dead on the floor of my parent's basement, I think. I also had this amazing Charlotte Hornets tricolor "graffiti' type hat that looked NOTHING like graffiti so much as just poor writing. I had an early-90s Jays cap for a while, too. Nothing else springs to mind.

yeah, i'm still all about the cotton "franchise caps." primaries are 60s and 70s o's "fun bird" caps, but i also really like the clemente era pirates cap and the early 70s bravos cap.

I have one official Tigers road hat, which I stole from my friend Tim.
One each of the Tigers and Red Sox franchise caps (I don't like these anymore)
One Chicago Cubs hat that I wore as a kid, which is twill with an adjustable strap (these are my favorite hats and noone makes them anymore, right?)

Henry Aaron played for the Indianapolis Clowns. Back in the '40s, they would do Globetrotters-type shtick as well as play competitive games.

I wonder if that store on Haight has some new vintage caps / tees in? I thought twice about buying their stuff w/ this logo:

I kinda collect MLB caps. Which I suppose is slightly odd since I'm from Scotland...

I have these fitted caps:
Pirates (Black)
Pirates (Gold 70's style)
A's (Green)
Orioles (Black with orange O logo)
Mets (Black)
Nationals (Blue)

and these adjustable ones:
Cardinals (Red)
Red Sox (Blue)
Reds (Red)
Reds (White with red pinstripe)
Pirates (Black)
Mets (Black)

You can see a few of them in this pic here

I should say that the fitted ones are left on display and the adjustable ones only get worn when I'm working in the garden.

zaxxon25, Friday, 25 May 2007 11:42 (twelve years ago) link

Zaxxon, that is a nice cap.

treefell, I'm in my early 20s and I feel weird wearing a baseball cap. It always seems way too "dude" for me. I do it anyway, though, because I leave home AND leave work at just about the right times every day to get an eye-load of sun, and I have very thick glasses so sunglasses are out of the question. And it'd be even weirder to zinc up under my eyes.

When I was buying my Reds cap, the woman at the cash went to move the sticker and said "oh, wait, do you plan to wear the sticker?" (I don't know why she asked or felt moved to move it). I replied, "No." and she said something to the effect of "good, because that's lame." My response: "It's like, it's new, we get it." Then she laughed way too hard and I felt like a comic king for about an hour. That's customer service.

Will M., Tuesday, 29 May 2007 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

I like your story, Will.

I have:

* a Knoxville Smokies cap
* a classic Boston cap
* a red Nationals cap with the interlocking "DC" (NOT the "W" cap - urgh!!) - this is really a beautiful cap. there are gold highlights on the letters.
