Pete Rose (What do you think?)

Overrated or Underrated?

The guy played hard and was consistent in a way that few players have ever been. That said, a HUGE chunk of all of those hits are singles.
Rose deserves some props for being a solid enough player to play so many positions in the field with proficiency.

Hall of Fame and reinstatement?

Pete bet on baseball, I have little doubt about that one. Rose has to come clean on this issue and I think allowing him to be elected into the hall of fame should be reinstated and he should be allowed at baseball functions, but never be allowed to manage again. Pete should be allowed to coach in spring training, as the guy is an encyclopedia of baseball.

I would BET that the Reds would hire him again as manager, if allowed, especially considering the team is in complete shambles.

Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Untold numbers of other players have done the same thing (betting) and just never been caught. His activities post-everyday play do not outshine his play when he was playing every day for the Reds. He worked hard; he deserves his place.

He's the Nixon of MLB.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:39 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck 'im. All he has to do is say, yes, I did a bad thing, I have a problem, I'm sorry; people would be falling over themselves to induct him. But he won't. As some columnist has suggested: make a permanent exhibit in the HOF with his story, his accomplishments, and the reasons he doesn't deserve a regular induction.

Being a stubborn SOB is unfortunately part of Rose's charm.

On the basis of his haircut, KEEP HIM OUT.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 27 November 2003 03:32 (twenty years ago) link

If the Hall of Fame had any actual connection to Major League Baseball, then I think it'd be fair to keep him out -- i.e., he violated the rules of MLB, he should be punished by MLB. But there is no connection between the two organizations! If the writers want to punish him with their vote, so be it. But he should be eligible.

he'd go in as a red, not as a phillie. ergo, keep the fucker OUT.

Well...Rose is FROM Cincinnatti and has his own road named after him in that town.

That Phillie team was good, but come on in comparison to "THE BIG RED MACHINE"?

Some Philly fans booed Mike Schmidt on Mike Schmidt Day.

I guess Pete is going to spill the beans in an upcoming interview and state he bet on baseball.

If this happens, look for the Reds to try and re-hire him as manager around the Allstar break.

earlnash, Friday, 2 January 2004 04:11 (twenty years ago) link

So flimsy. Now, he's saying he didn't make bets from his manager's office, but his bemulleted gambling pals and bookies say he did. He's a very bad liar. The replays of his denials were a damning indictment. He should be in the Hall, however. With a great big asterisk somewhere close by.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago) link

He still has not told the full truth, the timing of this really disgraced this year's HOF proceedings. I hope nobody buys his book.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

rose's gambling past doesn't only tarnish the sport but his deceit and continual lack of discretion should be more than enough to convince selig that the guy's never going to change. if reinstated you're giving a vote of confidence to a man who still doesn't feel that what he did was wrong. keep him and his haircut out of the hall and out of baseball.

I say anyone who got stinkfaced by Rikishi is automatically disbarred from the HOF.

Leee Smith (Leee), Friday, 9 January 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago) link

Rose has really misplayed his hand, this all went down very bad.

He's screwed and will not get into the hall of fame (at least for a good long time, if ever) or be reinstated.

It is his own fault, so it goes.

earlnash, Monday, 12 January 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

Rose is so screwed. When Hank Aaron says your a liar and don't deserve the hall, you are toast.

"I just think it's hogwash to say that he should be put back into the game just because the public wants it," Aaron said. "A rule is a rule, and the rule is on every clubhouse door that you can't bet on baseball. It doesn't say that you're excluded if you have 4,000 hits or 700 home runs."

kinda surprising to me that ilx didn't have a big argument about this q with a lot of neo-nihilist types advocating the "who cares what he did, it's the scoreboard that counts" position

If I'm a "neo-nihilist," anyone with a sense of baseball history knows gambling is the mortal sin, explicitly proscribed. PEDs are a fog by comparison.

Also Rose wasn't nearly the player Joe Morgan was.

Gambling was the mortal sin in baseball -- in 1920. I'm not defending betting on baseball, but gambling is no longer an "existential threat" (if you want to call it that) to the game, and hasn't been for decades. Everyone who uses the "but it's posted on every clubhouse wall" defense is paying lip service to outdated rules that nobody got around to updating. The punishment doesn't fit the crime anymore.
