We're not supposed to buy into "intangibles", like the galvanizing power of Derek Jeter's fist pump. What you're talking about is team discipline and preparedness, which are skills. And as you mentioned, it was obvious to anyone watching that the Jays didn't have it vs the Twins.

Those things are skills and can be taught in ways that are measurable but there’s a reason there’s such a thing as “being clutch” and the like. The mental aspect of the game is huge. We know hitters adapt their approach based on the count, on how many are on base, on a million variables. How teams respond to adversity is a huge thing and a differentiator when their skill levels, fitness etc is otherwise equal.
You can see when a game is scoreless and sometimes guys are flailing at the plate and swinging outside the zone at shit vs taking pitches, grinding a starter down, etc. The notion of working for the team for a later payoff. You see it all the way in the regular season, maybe a player has a ten pitch AB and doesn’t get anything but the pitcher is frustrated from the effort, so maybe he hangs that slider over the plate or comes out early. All of these things matter.

Exactly, the mental aspect/approach to the game, or whatever we want to call it, is huge. It's a synergy between players and coaches/management, and can absolutely be taught and developed within an organization.

You see it in these high stakes games, but it's even more obvious when you don't see it (e.g. not taking the extra base, failing to tag up, failing to anticipate a play, and countless other examples).

(xpost) I don't know about that. Lots of Jays teams had those things up and down the lineup, most famously the 2015 team. Which was 99% non-Canadian, and then there's Canadian hockey players, and...it's a weird thing to say.

There definitely seemed to be a lack of discipline in this team, but yeah attributing it to its regional location is not it

No, those are BS intangibles that mean nothing. I'm sure Vlad was plenty pumped up to be standing on 2nd as the potential tying. What he needed to be was awake and aware of the game situation, and the coaching staff had to communicate signs to the runners given that they could be heard because of the crowd noise. Those are skills.

Could not disagree more. I posted about this in the Jays thread and won't repeat here, but this game clearly meant something extra to Berrios on a personal level because of his past history with the Twins. And that ought to have been taken into consideration.
