"Major League players all over the field": 2022 Tigers

That quote was part of Hinch's response today to what I'm guessing was a question about making the playoffs. (I tuned in mid-interview.) The full response probably began with either "Look" or "At the end of the day..."

The roster is significantly better than the one that played above-.500 ball last season after April, so it's a little surprising to see the team projected by most major outlets to win fewer games in '22 than they did in '21. My guess is 82-80. They should be competitive.

By the end of the Tigers’ 5-4 walk-off win over the White Sox, Torkelson was soaking up nearly every ball hit in his path. Detroit's No. 1 prospect will head into the weekend still looking for his first Major League hit, but by robbing a hit from Leury García and scooping several throws at first base, he made sure he still left his mark in his big league debut.

Eduardo Rodriguez induced three ground-ball outs in his first three innings. All three were outs thanks to nice grabs at first from Torkelson, who stretched to scoop a throw from Jeimer Candelario headed for the dirt for the second out of the game before corralling a Javier Báez throw from deep in the hole in the second inning.

The real Tork Gem came when García lined the first pitch of the sixth inning to the right side with a projected 101.8 mph exit velocity. The ball had an expected batting average of .710 according to Statcast, but Torkelson dove to his right to make the grab in mid-air.

(Meant to include only the original tweet.)

Funnier than the quote is that no smart person said the same of Morris.

I was looking at team hitting stats, trying to gauge how bad the Jays are--pretty damn bad. The Tigers, though...the 1968 White Sox are my go-to comparison point for poor hitting teams; the Tigers are right there with them so far.

Chicago (1968): .228/.284/.311, 2.86 RPG, OPS+ 77
Detroit (2022): .219/.282/.313, 2.72 RPG, OPS+ 79

I'm surprised their OPS+ isn't worse than Chicago's--I don't think offense is down this year as much as it was in '68. Must be a park thing.

Roger refers to Comerica Park as Tiger Stadium and names a bunch of '84 Tigers who aren't Jack Morris (who is in the booth). Forever a punk, but...damn.

There were only nine qualified hitters across the American League batting below .200 entering Tuesday. Five of them play for Detroit: Schoop, Baez, Candelario, Grossman and rookie Spencer Torkelson.

Three position players (including Kody Clemens) pitched today.

Sure enough, right with the '68 White Sox--three of the top six teams are from '68.

Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Kody Clemens, Beau Brieske, Alex Faedo, Joey Wentz, Elvin Rodriguez, and Angel De Jesus are all good baseball names. Almost like they were spat out of a baseball name computer.

According to baseball-reference, Riley Greene is first MLB player to reach base safely 4 times in his debut since O's Cedric Mullins on 8/10/2018. First Tiger to do it since Scott Livingstone on 7/19/1991. https://t.co/KDpphwAD1T

His team down two runs in the fifth, Harold Castro, standing on second base with first base open and none out, observes a routine grounder hit to the shortstop, takes off for third, runs into a tag, not even close.

kinda feel bad for him because i don't think he did anything exactly *wrong* (except sign javy baez, which i of course championed at the time)

mize and torkelson were not controversial picks. alex faedo is a first-rounder. skubal is a gem from the ninth round. everyone thought they did well to sign e-rod. austin meadows is theoretically good (although you can't trust anyone the rays are jettisoning)

but absolutely none of it has worked : /

i think it makes sense to be critical of a pitcher-centric rebuild, and this season (esp with news of skubal "visiting a specialist" today) was on the fucking nose in showing why

o's fans have criticized elias for avoiding pitchers in the draft but it really does seem like a safer bet to hoard hitters and obtain pitchers once they've proven to be good and somewhat durable for someone else's team. greene and tork were two really good hitting prospects but that's all they had, and this season was basically dependent on both of them landing on their feet right away in addition to the pitchers staying healthy. the rest of the offense is either old or not very good. in retrospect i don't really get why everyone, myself included, thought they were going to be contenders this year. they were pretty good from may on last year but the pieces weren't there to really justify it (why i'm still not 100% confident the o's have taken "the next step" this year)
