that Yankees/jays game was a fun one!

apparently the fans in RF decided to taunt Hernandez with racist taunts. that was before he tied the game.

the yankees are continuing their anti-clutchness from last season i see.

xp yikes, given that and the (much lesser wrong) giancarlo stanton boos, maybe yankee stadium should reduce to 0% capacity.

Sounds like he was ok at least.

i watched the first couple of innings of that game, is he always that wild (pitching-wise)?

na (NA), Monday, 5 April 2021 14:04 (one year ago) link

In his first 50 innings he hasn’t been that wild, but he doesn’t top tier command yet. I think Maddon let him pitch a little further so that he could gain confidence, which resulted in more walks than anticipated but also that great strikeout turned 2 runs sequence.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 5 April 2021 20:03 (one year ago) link

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 20:50 (one year ago) link

btw i checked out more of the jomboy channel (a couple posts up) and i feel like it's a little bit of a brodown, but much less so than other sports dudes, and the "analysis" of fights, weird plays, fans making plays, players saying bad words (pretty much any player caught on film saying ANY words, in fact), and pretty much any other weird baseball thing is pretty great.

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 20:52 (one year ago) link

i'm so bad at lip reading, so it's nice to know that someone out there is convincingly figuring out what they're all yelling at each other

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 20:53 (one year ago) link

There is a lot to love with jomboy, his breakdown of Kevin Mather rotary club fiasco was fantastic.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 21:04 (one year ago) link

jomboy has bro tendencies, sure, but he seems like a genuine guy. a good way to avoid the bro-ishness is to avoid any video/audio where one of the other guys from his network appears

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 21:09 (one year ago) link

Yeah, started listening to a podcast episode that featured Trevor Plouffe and he couldn't stop himself from saying he got laid that morning.

On the other hand, O'Brien's been celebrating Kim Ng's promotion, wearing shirts that say 'Women belong in sports' and been pretty vindictive of personnel with assault allegations.

not really sure why -- he's good for nothing except homers and he can't play short, where the yankees are actually thin -- but apparently the rangers are paying (perhaps literally) all of the remaining $27m he's owed, so hey why not

Have only checked out a couple box scores and of course since I have been ignoring baseball the Reds start 5-1 with the most runs they have ever scored in the first 6 games. Figures...

Did not realize until a couple days ago that Naquin had ended up a Red. The two times I saw him play live for Cleveland he had great games both getting a couple hits and making really nice plays in the outfield. Seems like a guy that had the talent to make that next step but it never happened.

Never know, sometimes guys like that it finally clicks and they have some a few good seasons in their 30s.

Haven't really internalized that the White Sox and the Braves are in the playoffs, somehow I haven't really thought about either of those teams all season.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 4 October 2021 00:33 (eight months ago) link

One absolutely bonkers thing I noticed today - this season could very well end with no hitters over 7 fWAR. Going all the way back to 1884 when the NL expanded beyond 112 games, I can only find 2 seasons where that happened, 1900 and 1918. Didn't even happen in the strike seasons. Most seasons it doesn't come remotely close to happening.

― ✖, Wednesday, September 29, 2021 2:42 PM (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink

no one even made it to 6.9. honestly wild. even if trout/acuna/tatis had all been healthy enough to make it to 7, that still would've been a really light year. in 1999 no one had more than 8, which is rare in itself, but 6 players had 7+.

, Monday, 4 October 2021 05:08 (eight months ago) link

correa led position players with 7.2 bWAR. by my quick research the last times no hitter had at least 8 was 1981, 1971, and 1940, and 7.2 is the lowest leader I can see since george sisler led with 6.6 in 1918

mens rea activist (k3vin k.), Monday, 4 October 2021 09:02 (eight months ago) link

sorry Blue Jays fans, i was rooting for them to make it in. such a fun team

don't really care about either of the wild card games, four teams that i dislike (to varying degrees)

White Sox all the way, no one really thinks La Russa is doing anything that matters

na (NA), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:36 (eight months ago) link

speaking of stats/records like this: the triple

Pour one out for … the triple? For the first time in the history of baseball (not counting last season’s 60-game mess), nobody reached double digits in baseball’s most exciting play. No one got all that close, either; the year ended with David Peralta, Bryan Reynolds and Shohei Ohtani all tied with eight. We came awfully close to the same happening in 2019, when four batters tied for the MLB lead with ten, but it’s been only 14 years since each league had a hitter with 20-plus in Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 5 November 2021 02:26 (seven months ago) link

I believe the number is something pleasingly round. Like 10,000 or so?

Edit:

[MLB Statistics] 18,918 players have played Major League Baseball. Mike Trout, who is 25 years old, has been worth more WAR than 18,589 of them, or 98.2%.
