2020 NEW YORK METS: “I want to be on a parade float, drunk as hell.”

“I want to keep on playing through October,” Alonso said. “It would be nice to play all the way through 'til November. That’s the goal. I don’t want to think of Sept. [27th] as the last day of the season. I want to win the last game of the year.”

The Mets’ ability to do so will revolve in large part upon Alonso’s ability to repeat his historic rookie season. After it ended, Alonso returned to a life that was similar in all respects but one: “A lot more people knew my name.” At home in Florida and New York, he continued to work tirelessly on his defense, calling a Gold Glove the individual goal he covets most. He officially won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in November, before receiving the trophy from Jerry Seinfeld -- “someone I look up to” -- at the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s New York Chapter dinner.

MLBTR:

In a surprise move, the Mets have decided to promote top infield prospect Andres Gimenez to open the season. It’s not clear just yet how robust a role he’ll occupy.

Also making the MLB roster are lefty Chasen Shreve and righty Hunter Strickland. Both have had their contracts selected to the 40-man roster. It’s the same situation for infielder Eduardo Nunez, as reported previously.

To clear a 40-man roster spot, the Mets designated lefty Stephen Gonsalves for assignment.

Jeffrey Paternostro of BP on David Peterson:

Appearing this early means the Mets are burning a service time year with Peterson. Personally I would not be overly concerned with clawing back his age-30 season, given the stuff and projected top line numbers, but that is a thing teams do now as a matter of course. He may not pitch well enough to stay up all year anyway, or Marcus Stroman’s injury may end up minor enough to render this discussion moot in a couple weeks. It is unlikely to be spectacular, but a lefty who can take the ball every fifth day and potentially post a mid-4s ERA is by far the Mets best option at the moment.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 17:33 (two months ago) link

surprising -- my understanding is that the service-time cutoff is literally tonight, i.e. peterson will earn a year of time by pitching today and toronto's nate pearson will *not* earn a year of time after debuting tomorrow

oh wait, there are other ways to get a save:

A relief pitcher recording a save must preserve his team's lead while doing one of the following: Enter the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitch at least one inning. Enter the game with the tying run in the on-deck circle, at the plate or on the bases. Pitch at least three innings.

always forget about the "pitch at least 3 innings" version of the save
