SPRING TRAINING 2020

pitchers and catchers report tomorrow!

i'm baseball hungry that i'm watching the 1974 all star game (in Pittsburgh) for no particular reason. i've never seen luis tiant pitch. he would be my favorite player if he still played. he is always balking, but i guess he had an arrangement with the umpires. three of the top 10 second basemen of all time (by fWAR) were in the game (joe morgan, rod carew, and bobby grich). interesting to hear the announcers announce that it would most likely be hank aaron's last season, since he played two more in milwaukee before hanging it up.

i was also reminded of what a boss gaylord perry is. people don't really talk about him a lot these days but he had an incredible career

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!πŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 05:48 (five months ago) link

also, it's weird because you'd think i'd be a huge lou brock fan, but i've always been more swayed by the modern day view that lou brock was overrated and doesn't belong in the HOF. that's probably still right, but i must admit that it was thrilling to see him get on base and dance off the bag vs the tiant/munson battery. he stole 118 bases that year, his 35-year old season. (he stole second and then took third on an errant throw by munson)

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!πŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 05:51 (five months ago) link

it was like finally getting the answer to the age old hypothesis, "what if billy hamilton could hit at all?"

so in conclusion, i am excited for SPRING TRAINING 2020

reggie smith just swung his bat into the stands above the first base dugout, where a woman held her head in apparent pain as if she had been been struck in the head, only to reveal that no, she had not been struck at all. reggie smith sent the next pitch into the RF upper deck to punish her for lying #cardinalway

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!πŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 06:02 (five months ago) link

i'd apologize for spamming the thread with posts about the 1974 all star game, but there's no other thread and i already used my allotment of three apologies for the day (an actual rule i have to follow now).

mike marshall's 1974 season: 208 innings pitched, across 106 games. he didn't start a game, and he won 15 games with 21 saves. the announcer just mentioned that marshall had just set a record by pitching in 13 games in a row

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!πŸ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 06:11 (five months ago) link

what's crazy about this game is that as i understand from dock ellis' telling, every single person in the stadium is on acid

first mlb.tv broadcast this afternoon; honestly pretty impressed by the northeastern team

i mean they lost, and it's not like the sox were playing any major leaguers, and their pitchers grew increasingly scared to throw strikes, but they looked okay! red sox made both errors in the game

i ended up watching a re-broadcast of yesterday's Northeastern/BOS game, because i was baseball desperate.

now i am here and ready for the STL/NYM (SS) game today.

it has been a shitty year. i want to watch the baseball men

did you ever watch that 2015 (i think) empty stadium baltimore game? it is pretty fucked up

at one point jeff samardzija does the nose-clearing-inhale, the loogie-hocking-set-up-throat-thing, and the loogie-launch, all on camera and EXTREMELY on microphone. it's rough. and it wasn't even an empty stadium due to, you know, a disease spread by fluids. my point is, jeff samardzija is disgusting

ok, nothing against the announcer (he's better than what i'm used to), but i think if i'm going to watch empty stadium baseball games, i'm going to watch the version with just ambient ballpark noises as well. i want just the sounds of the ball hitting things, some grunts, the crack of the bat, touching the bases, the ball hitting a mitt. nothing else. no talking! no humans!
