In a development that promises to have far-reaching implications on this offseason’s free agent market, starter Stephen Strasburg has decided to opt out of the remaining four years and $100MM on his contract with the Nationals, as first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com (link). As Feinsand notes in a follow-up tweet, the present-day value of the remaining money on his Nationals deal is closer to $88MM, due to the original agreement’s heavily deferred structure (link).

strasburg will be interesting. he's a wonderful pitcher but there's a good chance that whoever signs him will be dealing with injuries.

...but obviously some team will have the money to risk it and sign him to a deal through his mid-to-late 30s.

(and as a red sox fan, if you had given me the choice of paying betts $30m/yr for the last five years of that contract knowing he was going to be dead weight versus paying nathan eovaldi $17m/yr for the next three years, i'd choose betts 100 times out of 100)
