IP, K/BB, WHIP, R/G, and Game Score to Verlander; ERA, ERA+, and FIP to Cole. bWAR Verlander, fWAR Cole--combined, slight edge to Cole. Baseball Prospectus tied, but Verlander if you carry it to a second decimal.

I don't know who should win, but I think Verlander will; that took hold early, and Cole had to clearly overtake him. He may have indeed overtaken him, but I don't think clearly.

gamescore and allWARs look like a wash. WHIP and K/BB is slightly in favour of Verlndr. Total Ks, ERA, ERA+ & FIP all tips things in favour of Cole.

one could just as easily say that finishing strong is more important. all the games count

I always try to look at thing through the prism of what I think will happen, not what should. I've always maintained strong finishes matter. But Verlander finished strong too, strong enough to mitigate whatever advantage Cole has there; Verlander was 11-2, 2.06 after the break, with a 9.8 K/BB ratio (and only 10 of his 36 HR).

For me, it is literally a tie. And that's how I'd vote if the rules allow for it.

WHIP is cool but I don't know if I give it as much importance as FIP and K/BB and era+ and even RAA.
