Waiting 171 days to submit your keepers will not give you another year of control – 2019 I Love Fantasy Baseball League is open!

League has been renewed along with everyone's teams (I think we are all returning).
Since the season starts March 20th – I've set our draft for Sunday March 17, 4pm (EST)
That is a weirdly early date, so if it's unworkable for too many people I'm open to moving to a later weekend after that first series in Japan.
Let's post our keeper picks here by the Monday before (11th).
Will's super helpful keeper/draft chart:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1celAzYS9n9Tnc3WIOpxfu76iBnZkbvepvKpCRXofFc4/edit#gid=2082806318

There is also a petition to change add/drop transactions to same day – I'm fine with either, give your yay or nays below!

As always, the rules:

• total of 5 keepers
• 2 of which must be 27, 28 or 29 yrs old
• another 2 players 26 or under
• one final keeper that can be either (basically anyone under the age of 30)
• age is based on that year's opening date (May 29, this year)
• for a player to be keep-eligible he must have been drafted on draft day by your team or traded to you by a team that drafted him. that means:
• free agent/waiver pick-ups cannot be kept
• if you have less than 5 keepers, you will get an extra draft pick at the end of the draft
• have fun

by the way – last years' champ, BNW, ran away with it by a 14 point margin by the end of the season. can he do it again? (checks keepers)... not likely!

Tentative keepers for my team (CorrosionOfConforto):

Bogaerts (<27)
Benintendi (<27)
Mazara (<27)
Carlos Martinez (27-29)
Iglesias (27-29)

only possible change would be swapping DeJong in for Mazara, but idk.

omar little, Friday, 1 February 2019 21:22 (two months ago) Permalink

oh ya... forgot id traded Mazara for Scherzer. that should probably be updated on the spreadsheet.

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:54 (two months ago) Permalink

So – i went through all the changes this year with yahoo – and there's not much.
However, yahoo has gone and added all the top 30 prospects for every fucking team! so if you want to go ahead and add, i dunno, Bryson Brigman (the #28 prospect for the Miami Marlins) and stash him for a year or more – there is now nothing stopping you.

When will we be able to see all available free agents for the draft?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 4 February 2019 19:34 (two months ago) Permalink

where is the prospects list? is it linked on the fantasy page or is it via the main MLB page?

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2019 19:41 (two months ago) Permalink

When will we be able to see all available free agents for the draft?

– i can't enter the keepers until i have them all (involves locking the league and manually doing the last 5 rounds of the draft) – however, you can check Will's spreadsheet (2nd page) that i linked in the original post to get a fair idea of who's off the board, tho nothing is official until all picks are in.

where is the prospects list? is it linked on the fantasy page or is it via the main MLB page?
– i *think* yahoo used the mlb end-of-season top-30, so i was poking through that to make the joke about Bryson Brigman and then doubled checked the yahoo player list. but again – we can't sort through our league's available talent until after i punch in all the keep picks between Monday 11th and the draft. if i get all the selects early, i can have it done earlier (but again - i would need all of them)

keeper decisions i struggled with
- not keeping willson contreras - probably not going to improve on him for catcher in the draft but i'd have to lose devers or torres to keep him (since he doesn't turn 27 until may) and they both seem potentially more valuable over the long term, especially since they're both so young
- not keeping jon gray - i keep expecting him to have a breakout season and his strikeout numbers can be gaudy when he's hot but he just hasn't been consistently good on the level of clevinger so i went with him instead

oh for the drafts! xp lol

no probably not -- the IRL one is usually around 1pm Eastern. but then we usually hang out for a while and possibly do dinner (we even have ppl drive in from out of town usually). iiiiiif it were possible to do the draft later that day, like 7pm instead of 4pm, awesome, but honestly, i'll have my laptop and my cheatsheets and shit, i might just take a chill 45m break from being super-social and be only semi-social while drafting. no need to move the day/time unless it doesn't work for others!

i just remembered i have a wedding to attend on 3/17 at 5PM PDT. What are the chances the draft could be moved to 11AM PDT?? just to cut it less close.

i realize it also still might be moved to another date per the first post in the thread...

omar little, Friday, 15 February 2019 17:38 (two months ago) Permalink

i don't want to move it up too much because of Will's draft, but if I move it up by an hour - it shouldn't affect him. our drafts are normally pretty quick because of the keepers – would you be able to be there for most of it (possibly in a tux) if i changed it to 12 PDT (3 EST)?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 February 2019 17:48 (two months ago) Permalink

that'll work, thanks!

3pm should still be okay for me... should be right around when my live one ends. my commish is giving me endless (joking, i think) shit for caring about literally any other league but 3 might actually work better, because it'll be done before we all go out for group dinner?

i'm sure they're relishing the idea of being able to spectate, heckle and back-seat draft our draft!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 February 2019 18:49 (two months ago) Permalink

hahaha oh god some of them will totally do that

we also have so many keepers/so few picks in that league, i just checked the timestamps for last year's draft, and it took... 45 minutes, lol. the league is only batters and team pitching (like team defense in football, kinda?) so it's 16 rounds, and 4 keepers, so really only 12 rounds (w/ 10 teams, and some teams have too few picks, so it ends up being... 115 total?)

we use fantrax btw, and it RULES, i'd almost recommend migrating but then we'd lose league history :(

LuvWilTeheranUsApart returns for another year of mediocrity. Updated team name pending if I can think of a new one (usually I can't).

SS Alex Bregman
OF Michael Brantley
OF Stephen Piscotty
OF Hunter Renfroe

BN Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
BN Bo Bichette

SP Jacob de Grom
SP Trevor Bauer
SP Kyle Freeland
SP Mike Fiers

SP-RP Ross Stripling
SP-RP Brad Peacock

RP Adam Ottavino
RP Pedro Strop

The good:

I didn't draft too many pitchers like I do every year.
I'm set for 2021-2023 with a core of Bichette, Vlad, and Bregman.
The SS/3B controversy between Bregman and Chapman (Bregman had to make the switch to SS when I drafted Chapman) should push them both to excel, much like with Jeter and A-Rod.
I've been alternating three bad years with three good ones for a decade in this league which means I'm due this year.

The bad:

Relief core is weak.
OF is sketchy.
My starters are fragile and/or might get eaten by Coors Field.

It's all on Yahoo's FAQ about Advanced Metrics:

HR/FB%* - Hit Reach/Facebook - how many of their good hits end up as viral videos on social media platforms.
GB/FB* - Good bloopers/Facebook - how many of their mistakes end up as viral videos on social media platforms.
BABIP* - Bad Ass Boys In Pyjamas - how often they accidentally wear their PJs to the game.
ISO* - Isometric. Basically a measurement of how similar their height is to their width and depth. Bartolo Colon has a high ISO; Billy Hamilton, not so much.
CT%* - Chrono Trigger% - how many endings they have completed of Squaresoft's seminal 1995 Japanese RPG Chrono Trigger.
wOBA* - Short for Wobble. Basically, how awkward their running looks. Good for telling if they are likely to attempt to steal second.
wRAA* - How many near-homers they hit, only to get caught at the warning track and make you yell WRAAAAAA.
RC* - Royal Crown - How much non-Pepsi, non-Coke cola they drink.
TOB* - Time on base - how many hours, minutes, and seconds they spend either safe on a base, or defending a base. Tends to be higher for infielders.
GB* - Good Boys - how many good boys they know.
GB%* - Good Boy Percentage - how many good boys they know, divided by how many good and bad boys they know.
FB* - Future Bank - how much money they have yet to earn.

OPS+* - Occurences playing Sheeran's "+" - how many times the player has spun the triple platinum Ed Sheeran album from 2011.
P/PA* - Pen-Pineapple-Apple. A measure of how many second pens they are missing.
GDPR* - God Damn Power Rifles. A measure of their Lootscore in popular video game Destiny 2.
SL* - Sleazy lines. You know when you see a guy get a single and talk to the first basemen? Sometimes they're gross about it.
WAR* - what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

the disparity between my team's offensive and pitching points is truly inspiring

I probably asked this before, but remind me why there are categories for both SLG & XBH? Seems like double dipping into the same skill set for its own sake.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:24 (two weeks ago) Permalink

(I guess I could do a regression and see how correlated they are, but I am not really feeling like doing yet another regression in my free time.)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:26 (two weeks ago) Permalink

i think it's supposed to be double-dipping for power hitters (triple-dipping if you count homers), kinda like QS and W for SP?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 14:27 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Ah but QS and W are not correlated, as evidenced by Jake DeGrom last year (and my team, I was towards the top in QS but only midpack in W). QS is kind of an equalizer for good pitchers on low-scoring teams or with bad luck (or both, eg: DeGrom). Kind of a way to hack advanced stats using traditional stats.

I'll do a regression on SLG & XBH just to make my point. It seems to be pretty much double-counting power, with a little bit of a correlation with NSB.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:08 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Yeah, having HR and SLG and XBH seems way too power-shifted, this isn't 1996-2002 anymore. Perhaps chicks dig WAR these days.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:10 (two weeks ago) Permalink

we don't include defense at all right now, right? WAR would be at least a step towards that

na (NA), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 16:16 (two weeks ago) Permalink

but more innings means higher likelihood of wins, no? and also qs is literally about more innings

i mean unless we have RPs out here throwing 160 innings a season

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:23 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Exactly... Tampa's "openers" always get denied QS due to archaic scoresheet criteria.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:27 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I mean, not the openers, but the followers who pitch the bulk of the game.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:27 (two weeks ago) Permalink

> but more innings means higher likelihood of wins, no?

slightly, wins and QS only correlate 63% of the time. Not a dutiful correlation imho.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:42 (two weeks ago) Permalink

with two outliers (kersh and degrom, who any other year wd probably have more), all of the 20+ QS guys have at least 12 and up to 20 wins. Of all of the 15+ wins guys, only one didn't post double-digit QS (yarborough, because rays). it might have a leaguewide correlation of 63% (which still seems... pretty high to me!), but don't we only care about the most valuable players? (i use "most" loosely here, like, top 100 pitchers or something)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 17:53 (two weeks ago) Permalink

if WAR is available next season i would definitely be open to replacing Wins and XBH with it. however – i'm not sure it will be. right now they have it viewable with a bunch of other advanced stats - but i don't see it as an option for actual scoring stats.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 18:38 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Right, and reminder it's Will that's hung up on QS/W correlation, it is I who thinks XBH+HR+SLG seems superfluous towards power.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 19:25 (two weeks ago) Permalink

idk if i'd say i'm hung up on it, just kinda wondering out loud about it. i'm happy w/ how the league is!

THAT IS NICE TO HEAR! seriously. could do with more positive feedback.

oh geez! sorry if i don't say it enough but i look forward to this league every year! in fact this yera i dropped out of a couple of leagues because i wanted to pay attention to the only ones i care about this one, my good irl friends one and this one. i dig how totally different it is from everything else, it kinda makes you focus on good players vs. "good fantasy players" (or adapt your meaning of "good fantasy players" with STATS.XLS) and the age gated thing is a thing of beauty that i have ripped off for other-sport leagues over the past few years. it's great, you're great, i kiss u

...and with that post, I have cursed my team to a freefall into the cellar.

Need six IL slots — maybe a dozen by the end of the week.

Andy K, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 20:29 (four days ago) Permalink

was thinking next year, with the short IL (DL) we might should add a 3rd slot.
