TB already filled with triple-a pitching coach kyle snyder

Looks like the Mets trainer's gone as well, plus the bench/bullpen/1st base coach have permission to speak with other teams. Actually pleasantly surprised they are cleaning house like they should.

The Mets have lined up interviews with a host of managerial candidates this week including Alex Cora, and Joe McEwing.

One man not interviewing for the position will be Brad Ausmus, who reportedly has no interest in managing the team.

Tigers: Trying to get more analytics-oriented.
Gardenhire: No thanks.
Tigers: OK, good enough. https://t.co/aBysIaiAbp

Source: In interview, #Tigers were impressed by Gardenhire’s openness to sabermetrics, which evolved during his tenure with #DBacks. @MLB

Not that it will make a difference for a few years, but...huh.

my purple-faced man clint seems to have embraced it . . . not that it makes much difference

dusty done in dc

na (NA), Friday, 20 October 2017 16:17 (six years ago) link

not to give morbs an aneurysm, but the mets can and probably will do worse than dusty

mookieproof, Friday, 20 October 2017 18:22 (six years ago) link

interesting if true!

I really don't know how to evaluate Dusty (or any other mgr) on skills outside of game tactics and playing time assignments, unless there's open rebellion from the players. I'm sure he had strengths as he won several titles...

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 October 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

To be honest, I don't know that Dusty really made all that many wrong moves other than just everything went to crap in that last game. It wasn't like Game 6 against the Angels or anything. The guy as a manager has had 2 or 3 of the weirdest and painful playoff melt downs, not counting the Giants losing that 'play in' game to the Braves.

earlnash, Friday, 20 October 2017 18:41 (six years ago) link

yeah i was talking about tactics over the whole career, eg piling up the Pitcher Abuse Points w/ the Cubs.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 October 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

Dusty definitely is a big 'roles' guy and that has burned him leaving his closer underused while blowing leads in playoff games too. The guy has also had that put the fast guy that doesn't get on base very often at the top of the lineup too.

indians pitching coach mickey callaway to manage the metsies

2002 AL rookie of the year eric hinske has been named angels hitting coach

eric hinske's bWAR in 2002: 4.0
in the following 11 seasons: 4.2

mookieproof, Monday, 23 October 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

yeah, but it's all about teaching that pleasant 2002 vibe

tbf though, sometimes terrible hitters end up being decent coaches
john mabry managed to put up a negative career WAR over 13 seasons and he seems to do ok as the card's hitting coach

Currently (Karl Malone), Monday, 23 October 2017 20:10 (six years ago) link

those who can't, teach the Angels

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 October 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

new mets manager: -1.5 bWAR
terry francona: -2.8
matheny: -0.3
andy green: -1.3
kevin cash: -3.0
rick renteria: -0.5

mookieproof, Monday, 23 October 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

molitor, mattingly, scioscia, counsell and bud black were pretty good tho. and dusty (rip)

mookieproof, Monday, 23 October 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

Significantly better than that: Jose oquendo and Willie McGee, both joining the cardinals coaching staff in 2018 (still unsure on McGee’s role)

fangraphs projected them to win 79.1 games and finishing last in the division this year

i mean the guy is a joyless mandarin but he's won a world series, never had a losing record with the team despite going through a 'rebuild' and is clearly one of the best in the game

mookieproof, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:04 (six years ago) link

I think I packed a joyless mandarin in my lunch today.

Gay Talese on Joe Girardi a few years back was really good. It's a travel day, you have time https://t.co/XDFwYA0SoF

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:38 (six years ago) link

sticking with my theory. I don't think Cashman wants name brand manager, not that guys like Willie, Dusty, or even A-Rod don't have merits https://t.co/AdachA6VKo

— Jay Jaffe (@jay_jaffe) October 26, 2017

again, sticking with that theory... Meulens (ex-Yankee), Kapler, Martinez, maybe someone even more obscure. https://t.co/ue68iQQjbw

wow, that really is a shock

guessing he will not be unemployed for long

frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:45 (six years ago) link

btw it does not surprise me that Counsell is a good manager. dude gritted out a 16-year MLB career (and a World Series!) despite having virtually no natural baseball talent.

frogbs, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:47 (six years ago) link

80-grade batting stance tho

mookieproof, Thursday, 26 October 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

we used to imitate that stance in softball, I have no clue how he ever got a hit that way

The Indians have hired Carl Willis to be their pitching coach. Willis worked for the past 2 1/2 seasons on deposed Red Sox manager John Farrell's staff

Dave Martinez to manage the Senators.

I guess the Girardi to Washington rumors were based on pure speculation.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 30 October 2017 06:04 (six years ago) link

they should definitely call themselves the Senators, cuz they can't close the deal. :)

Ruben Amaro Jr. will be #Mets’ first base/baserunning/outfield coach, sources tell The Athletic. Had similar role with #RedSox last season.
