Ubaldo Jimenez and Wade Miley are gonna take this team all the way.

JoeStork, Friday, 21 April 2017 01:52 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

So, Ubaldo pitches 7 innings of 2-hit ball against Scherzer (who takes a no-hitter into the 6th), Buck leaves him in for the 8th to save the bullpen, and he obviously gives up a 3-run hr before getting pulled. But they rally in the 9th and win the game in 12. I don't know.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 04:03 (six years ago) link

neither does Buck

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 11:52 (six years ago) link

I have no explanation for how this group of players has been a consistently contending team for 6 years now

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 14:20 (six years ago) link

wieters revenge

johnny crunch, Thursday, 11 May 2017 02:27 (six years ago) link

turns out this bullpen is literally held together by zach britton

qualx, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 03:57 (six years ago) link

Put in Davis.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 04:12 (six years ago) link

The thought "Chris Davis is gonna win this game" did cross my mind but I was thinking as a pitcher

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link

These guys are almost the definition of a "good bad team." Fun but crazy-making to watch, objectively lacking in on-the-field talent, losing games and looking horrible, winning more games and looking like it's all gonna fall apart at any second. I hope they go all the way.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:56 (six years ago) link

team is bad

qualx, Saturday, 27 May 2017 07:04 (six years ago) link

bad bad team

qualx, Sunday, 28 May 2017 03:27 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

so it turns out you need pitchers to start games

qualx, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 02:42 (six years ago) link

and not just die

qualx, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 02:42 (six years ago) link

I've been watching this team for years and I do feel that they're always capable of being worst-team-in-the-league bad for a week and then bouncing back

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 02:45 (six years ago) link

true many years but this year 4/5 of the rotation is honest to god bad and that magic doesn't seem to be there

the farm system has gone from decent (4-5 years ago) to one of the worst in the league and there isn't really a way out

we're going back into the dark ages

qualx, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 03:24 (six years ago) link

Maybe if Machado sucks bad enough this year we'll be able to afford to resign him

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 03:33 (six years ago) link

You do start to feel like something's grievously wrong with pitcher development when you start with Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Jake Arrieta, lol Matt Hobgood I guess, and only one of those people turns into a really good major league starter and only after he leaves the team.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 03:38 (six years ago) link

lol matt hobgood was never even supposed to be good, he was a throwaway first rounder who opened up more money to spend on mychal givens and no one else who made it to the majors. and givens was drafted as a hitter, where he struggled for years before being converted back into a pitcher.

andy macphail wasn't the worst GM ever but that draft was really something else

qualx, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 05:49 (six years ago) link

anyway i remember the "cavalry" hype years well and i think it was just that -- a desperate fanbase clinging onto any narrative that gave us hope, and it's not like we had anything else going for us

some of it was probably bad pitching development but this has also been one of the healthiest rotations over the past 5 or so years and i think that counts for something. only bundy and matusz ever really had true ace potential and only one of them's totally burned out so far

you'd think this team would've figured out a better way to draft by now but i've been following the drafts since 2006 and they've pretty much always sucked

qualx, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 05:56 (six years ago) link

it's magical that the white sock who going to complete the sweep is miguel gonzalez

qualx, Thursday, 15 June 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

he'd look pretty good in our rotation right now probably

qualx, Thursday, 15 June 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

what a great team

qualx, Thursday, 15 June 2017 05:43 (six years ago) link

Has there been a game in the last month where they didn't give up 5+ runs in the first couple innings?

JoeStork, Thursday, 15 June 2017 05:50 (six years ago) link

AL record: 18 straight with at least five allowed. MLB record is 20.

Andy K, Thursday, 22 June 2017 02:55 (six years ago) link

now at 19

there have been no streaks longer than 15 since the record was set in 1924

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 24 June 2017 11:20 (six years ago) link

putting Ubaldo back in rotation = going for record

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 24 June 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

I wouldn't give up on Bundy.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 24 June 2017 17:11 (six years ago) link

according to rosenthal, duquette only has the go ahead to dangle the relievers (but not givens), seth smith and maybe welington castillo

gonna be a long decade

qualx, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 02:04 (six years ago) link

i know manny wouldn't net much with only a year left on his contract but if he isn't gonna sign long term right now, there's no point in holding on

this team got so damn expensive in exactly the way everyone knew it would, and there aren't enough scrub idiot GMs left to want to take on albatross contracts of guys worth < 0.5 WAR

qualx, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 02:08 (six years ago) link

are there any steve phillipses left? any front offices still without a good analytics department? :(

qualx, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link

The mariners have a solid history of making dumb trades with the orioles but I think they may have wised up by now.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 03:51 (six years ago) link

I just can't be rational about Manny, I want the Orioles to break the bank to keep him here, I know it doesn't make sense, it's just how I feel

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 04:35 (six years ago) link

if they can do it they should! he really doesn't have that much value with only a year left on his contract. but i don't think he'd sign long term in a million years

and with the davis/jones/trumbo contracts weighing everything down for the next few years it'd be impossible to do a real rebuild with him in the center. it'd also be a depressing situation if he has to play out his peak years on shitty teams.

qualx, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 07:23 (six years ago) link

Earlier this week, Orioles general manager Dan Duquette seemed poised to market some of his veterans in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but that no longer looks like the case. Even though the Orioles are 46-50 and 4.5 games out of a wild-card spot, Duquette told reporters Saturday that they’re planning to approach the deadline as buyers. “Whatever we do [at the trade deadline], we are going to try to help the club,” he said (via Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com, on Twitter). “I still like a lot of our core players. I don’t believe all the stuff that says we have half the club on the market, because we have a lot of baseball left to be played.” Specifically, the Orioles will attempt to upgrade a rotation that entered Saturday ranked in the majors’ bottom three in ERA (5.93) and fWAR (2.0). Duquette noted that “if we can get a little bit better starting pitching or add to the pitching we can make a run at this.”

dodgers are out here looking to add yu darvish to their playoff rotation and dan thinks.........

i can't finish the thought he's just a fucking moron at this point

qualx, Tuesday, 25 July 2017 03:12 (six years ago) link

forgive me for ever doubting jeremy hellickson

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 August 2017 01:57 (six years ago) link

Steve
The Orioles apparently didn’t trade Britton because they thought he should be worth the same sort of package that Chapman and Miller were last year. They are trading away all of their international money for Quad A guys. Their manager blasts pitch framing. Are they the new Diamondbacks?

Eno Sarris
Had one FO person tell me that they had identified the Orioles as evaluating things in a way they could take advantage of, that they were a little backwards. I think that's a little unfair, since I've know their analytics people and they're top notch. However... you never know how much the team listens to their analytics team. Their awesome bullpen year in and year out may be all they use their numbers people for.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 August 2017 17:17 (six years ago) link

not gonna make it to the playoffs with chris tillman in the rotation

qualx, Friday, 4 August 2017 03:13 (six years ago) link

buck showalter! leaving a young broken pitcher in way too long to sustain a not even no hitter

qualx, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 04:47 (six years ago) link

My loyalties are divided between the Mariners and Orioles, who have a pretty much equal level of futility in my lifetime. Yet somehow when the M's are chasing the wild card I think "what's the fucking point, they'll just get knocked out by the Yankees and it'll be more depressing than if they miss the playoffs altogether," but with the Orioles it's "hell yes, this terrible dumbass team is gonna go all the way!"

JoeStork, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 18:16 (six years ago) link

Orioles look like a solid bet to make fools of the projection systems once again. PECOTA had them at 74-88. They'd have to go 6-23 the rest of the way to hit that. (Not that this team isn't capable of a 6-23 run...)
