contreras is at least capable of dominating, has dominated for long stretches, and seems to at least have a chance of turning it around and becoming a top of the rotation type of pitcher.

loaiza, meanwhile, is a shitty pitcher.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 31 July 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds about right, John. Someone on another board joked that maybe the 10,000 Loaiza bobbleheads were sent to New York, too.

Kerry (dymaxia), Saturday, 31 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i don't know what cashman was thinking. it was a good salary dump? it will free up 8 mil next year, and as long as loaiza doesn't accept arbitration we'll get a draft pick or two...other than that, no positives at all.

though i did hear some guy on FSN saying this trade is a sign that the white sox are "waving the white flag in the AL central". uh...who pays these people?

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 31 July 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

See "Trade Rumours" thread for my thoughts, ie, Loaiza is the shittier of the two only in the Bizarro world.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now, there's only one white flag in the AL Central, and it's got Royal blue trim on it.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Twins 13-2 in their last 15 games, while the White Sox get blown out by one of the worst teams in the game...I think I hear the fat lady a-warmin' up. The Sox have NO shot at the AL Wild Card.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

White Sox reacquire Robbie Alomar from the D-backs in a very deja vu moment for them (see Everett, Carl). Well, at least Robbie can get on base, bunt and field pretty well. Doubt this'll make much an impact, but here's hoping...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sad.

What did they give up, Diaz and Anderson?

This team is a joke.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe KW can trade Mike Sirotka for David Wells again, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Jose Paniagua is coming back, too.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's Minnie Minoso!?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

KW: 8/10/04
"I'm very excited about our latest signing!"

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And JD, re Contreras "dominating for long stretches" ... post-Cuba? As Billy Martin asked of another pitcher's glory days, "Where, Hasbrouck Heights?"

I saw that game where Fox continually creamed themselves over Jose's family's arrival, and if the Mets had been smart enough not to swing when he couldn't find the fucking plate, he would've lost instead of "dominating."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Monetizing, the Score reports that Diaz may be called up by this weekend.

Buh-bye Schoney? Mike Jackson?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

During the baseball strike of the year of 1900 and 81, ESPN put on an oldtimers game in DC at RFK stadium. Luke Appling hit an HR!!! I think it was off of Gaylord Perry of all people.

Old boy was like 74 when he hit that one!

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking it up...it was 1982 and it was off of Warren Spahn! I remember seeing the game as a kid, but Perry was actually still in the majors.

Old boy was 75 when he hit that jack!

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a Nellie Fox bobblehead!

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They're clearing space for Matt Stairs in Cooperstown!

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I remain unconvinced that Robbie Alomar will cure what ails this team...sheesh.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What ails this team is the sad fact that when they traded Loiaza he might have been their second best starter, plus that whole Magglio/Big Hurt on the DL business.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless Robbie reverts to 1990s form and leads them to a faceoff with the crosstown rival Cubs!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Buehrle & Garcia were the Sox's #1 and #2 starters when E-Lo was dealt. Garland and Loiaza battled it out for the 3 and 4 spot. Contreras is now probably the #3 spot considering Garland is now below .500 this year. The 5th spot probably will be given to Felix Diaz or Neal Cotts. Schoeneweis is back on the DL now and I doubt he'll ever start another game w/ the Sox.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Garcia, shit how could I forget?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Schoeneweis is back on the DL now and I doubt he'll ever start another game w/ the Sox.

Oh come on now, that's unfair. Just because the guy gave up 9 earned in 2 innings pitched to the KANSAS CITY ROYALS? Give the guy a break. That was a gutty performance, he toughed it out.

Fucking garbage, this team.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

But seriously, I think Schoney was hurt; he dropped off so precipitously this year. The pattern is quite common with the Sox organization.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to sound so negative. I just really can't get over that game Wednesday - and I didn't even watch it! I went to see this film; and as I walked home, enjoying the night air and reflecting on what I had seen, I had this little tinge of anticipation. "Gee, I wonder how the Sox did." "can't wait to get home and check the box score." I mean, what a joke! Why even expend the mental energy caring about these sad-sacks. What was a greeted with? A starter that gives up 9 earned in 2, and an offense that manages TWO HITS. Against THE ROYALS.

That's the frickin' nadir. In 12+ years of following this team, THAT is the nadir. Just abject wretchedness.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If they don't stop sucking soon, I'M gonna run on the field and punch someone.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Steven Goldman of BP:

"The Chicago White Sox are the chain restaurant of baseball. They are, by definition, white, the absence of color. Their ballpark does not signify architecturally. They have been overwhelmingly right-handed for years. They have not won a World Series since Woodrow Wilson was in the White House. They do not provide free breadsticks. Unlike the rest of us casual diners, Chicagoans have an alternative."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They are, by definition, white, the absence of color.

I'm sure the non-white players on the team would be happy to read this.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure the comment was based simply on the definition of the color and had no racial motivation behind it, and folks looking to stir up racially-motivated stuff regarding this comment should look somewhere else.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

suuuuure.

Also anyone plugging the Cubs as the alternative to the Sox because the Sox haven't won the WS since forever need to like, get real.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the "they've been overwhelmingly right-handed for years!" argument is pretty hilarious. Like someone will read that and slap their forehead and say "fuck's sake, he's right! Why, they have Corey Patterson on the north side!"

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I see brief quotes from BP columns ain't working here. They lose a lot outta context . Trust me, Goldman wasn't gettin racial.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"they've been overwhelmingly right-handed for years!" = having Big Hurt & Konerko & Magglio & Valentin (or is he switch?) & ... & ... um, what other notable righties have the ChiSox had? & what notable lefties?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

My, that was well-informed and not insulting at all. Try being a fan for three or four generations and get back to me.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

regardless of content or context, goldman is totally right. of course, the cubs suck too.

i'm can't tell if hstencil is kidding or not.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Notable non-righties [mod edit] for the ChiSox in recent years (side they hit from) (last year in Chicago):

Jose Valentin (S) (current), Ray Durham (S) (2002), Robin Ventura (L)(1998), Harold Baines (L) (1997), Tim Raines (S) (1992)

Also notable: a half-year of Kenny Lofton; dicking around / getting dicked by D'Angelo Jimenez; Ozzie Guillen (cough cough)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That should say "notable non-RIGHTIES".

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

done.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I can gather from that snippet, Goldman probably wouldn't have a beef if they played in a better park and had a hint of crimson in their unis.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth, Morb quoted a hit-n-run-like regular column, wherein Mr. Goldman offers a weekly (?) rundown of the American & National League, giving each team a paragraph's worth of time and a grade. You don't want to know what he gave the White Sox grade-wise.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

So, Monetizing Eyeballs and Kerry...your predictions for the remainder of the year? The fact that the White Sox have the easiest schedule remaining still doesn't budge my recently cemented opinion that the Sox are doomed for a third place finish; second, maybe, if the Jndjans fall back to earth a bit. There's something about this group o' players that just cannot put it together when it matters most.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The WhiSox may have an easy schedule but no Maggs nor Thomas spells trouble for the southsiders.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I just don't know with this team. You just never know when they'll show up and when they'll dog it. I felt like they still had an outside shot going into tonight, owing mainly to the schedule. But GAWD could Freddy have picked a more inopportune time to stink up the joint?

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

...and just as I post that, Rowand gets thrown out by A MILE trying to steal 2nd. WTF?? Whose call was that?

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dale Sveum's?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

heh. That standing ovation he got the other day for NOT sending a guy was pretty funny. Much as the concept Red Sox Nation annoys me at times, y'all are into your baseball team.

Anyway, put a fork in the palehose.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

red sox nation is more than a concept. i respect it i do. when i'm feeling really benevolent anyway.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, Feisty. When the ol' Pale Hose give up a bunch of crooked numbers to the Kitties, they got some problems...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to last night's game, and I couldn't be more pissed off, but if it's any consolation, someone sent me this:

"Last night John McEnroe's on MSNBC was a repeat from during the Democratic National Convention. It had a piece in which John Cusack interviewed Barack Obama. At the end Cusack made a point of saying that both he and Obama are Chicagoans. "But," said Obama, "you are a Cubs fan and I'm a White Sox fan. Go Sox."
