ONE MORE HOMER

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 22:27 (one year ago)

I just tuned in and he did it, good for him!

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 September 2024 22:59 (one year ago)

50/51 and there is over a week left.

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:00 (one year ago)

5-5 with 2 homers, 2 doubles, and 2 steals

brony james (k3vin k.), Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:01 (one year ago)

what a player

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:04 (one year ago)

oh my god

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:09 (one year ago)

MLB Network is going overboard, saying stuff like the greatest baseball player of all time.

Slow down a moment...

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:17 (one year ago)

you are fucking kidding me

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:29 (one year ago)

No fucking way

Bee OK, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:29 (one year ago)

WOW!

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:31 (one year ago)

what

the fuck

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:31 (one year ago)

it will be interesting seeing the research roll in tomorrow to see how this compares with the great single offensive games of all time

i remember Nomar getting 10 RBI once, like shohei has today. it was 2 slams i think, making up the preponderance. but this blows that away

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:34 (one year ago)

the record for total bases in a game is Shawn Green w/19 (6-6, 4 HR, 2 doubles), Shohei is at 17.

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:36 (one year ago)

on the day he annihilated Green's single season Dodger HR record too.

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:36 (one year ago)

Three more batters till ohtani is back up. Why not get a cycle today too while you're at it?

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:37 (one year ago)

Damnit norby

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:37 (one year ago)

ho lee shit

brony james (k3vin k.), Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:37 (one year ago)

I kinda don't know what to say

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:38 (one year ago)

Except that it's insanely on brand for Ohtani to skip a 50/50 day and go straight to 51/51

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:39 (one year ago)

Final batting line today: 6-for-6 with 3 HRs, 2 SB, 2 doubles, 10 RBI.

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:40 (one year ago)

Forgetting 51/51 for a moment (lol), I actually can't remember a game I've seen with a better batting line. Clemenza, you got a recent comparison for me?

H.P, Thursday, 19 September 2024 23:43 (one year ago)

Is he going to pitch in the postseason? I would not put it past him at this point.

Bee OK, Friday, 20 September 2024 00:23 (one year ago)

Since RBI became official in 1920, only one MLB player has had, over the course of his entire career (same game or not),

a game with 10+ RBI
a game with 6+ hits
a game with 5+ XBH
a game with 3+ HR
a game with 2+ SB

That one player is Shohei Ohtani. He did all of it today. pic.twitter.com/njXOmwHKnm

uhh

brony james (k3vin k.), Friday, 20 September 2024 00:57 (one year ago)

every single hit today was an absolute rope

omar little, Friday, 20 September 2024 00:58 (one year ago)

Just saw the whole thing in sequence. To (possibly) make it all even more amazing, he was 3-3 with 2 SB..then hit the 3 HR. And if he hadn't been thrown out at third (on the third hit, I think), he would have had a cycle, too.

clemenza, Friday, 20 September 2024 00:58 (one year ago)

Funny comment on the tweet above: "If he had had this game for the Angels, they would have still lost somehow."

clemenza, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:09 (one year ago)

A year ago to the day he had Tommy John's* surgery.

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:14 (one year ago)

So what record is he breaking next? I believe in the 5hr game.

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:21 (one year ago)

only 2 HR shy of Judge for the MLB lead now

omar little, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:24 (one year ago)

He's got 9 games left to play around with still. I believe

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:43 (one year ago)

he needs to stop running imo, unless they're in deep danger of losing the bye

mookieproof, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:50 (one year ago)

Boooooooo

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:51 (one year ago)

priorities, man

mookieproof, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:51 (one year ago)

I don't see the dodgers reigning him in. Not sure they even could if they tried

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:52 (one year ago)

Funny misspell

H.P, Friday, 20 September 2024 01:52 (one year ago)

I don’t really have anything to add but wanna post in this thread anyway

frogbs, Friday, 20 September 2024 02:10 (one year ago)

Dude is living in a different reality than the rest of us. As for future records, I can definitely see him hitting 5HR in a game. In this game he was about two feet from another HR on that first double of the game. If that one had gone out, there'd be no question about whether this was the "greatest game ever".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 20 September 2024 05:09 (one year ago)

MLB Network is going overboard, saying stuff like the greatest baseball player of all time.

Slow down a moment...

is he going to reach bonds/mays/ruth levels of WAR for a career? probably not. but he is clearly doing entire levels of stuff that no other baseball player has ever done or likely will do. i mean jfc

mookieproof, Friday, 20 September 2024 05:16 (one year ago)

He’s amazing

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 20 September 2024 11:45 (one year ago)

i know i'm a little late to the party here but holy moly what ohtani did

z_tbd, Friday, 20 September 2024 15:34 (one year ago)

I think James once devised a kind of provisional Game Score for hitters, but googled and found nothing. Probably on his website, and all that stuff's gone now.

clemenza, Friday, 20 September 2024 15:43 (one year ago)

Shohei surely locked up that MVP award with that game

omar little, Friday, 20 September 2024 15:53 (one year ago)

One thing about the SB thing that bothers me is that Ohtani is stealing in the "new era":

pitch clock
limited pick off attempts
increased base size so there's 4.5" less distance to cover between bases
etc.

It doesn't overshadow what he's done, but it's definitely not the same when people start trotting out the historical comparisons.

Is there a SABR way of devaluing the >2022 stolen base or revaluing the <2022 stolen base?

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Friday, 20 September 2024 16:18 (one year ago)

51/55, though? To me, that more than negates the things you point out.

clemenza, Friday, 20 September 2024 16:25 (one year ago)

lol

omar little, Friday, 20 September 2024 16:29 (one year ago)

The only tiny, tiny asterisk I'd add to last night--I'm really not trying to being a gadfly here; it's a really tiny one--is that the third HR was off a position player. When I watched the highlights last night, I did think "That guy's a pitcher?" when the last one floated up to the plate--just had that confirmed now.

clemenza, Friday, 20 September 2024 16:30 (one year ago)

well that’s what happens when you comprehensively murtalize the other team - if anything it’s further proof that shohei can’t be stopped

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 September 2024 17:27 (one year ago)

put another way, if shohei wasn’t so good, it’s unlikely that position player would have been in the game at that point

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 September 2024 17:28 (one year ago)

tough to give shohei an asterisk for that

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 September 2024 17:28 (one year ago)

my asterisk is that home runs/stolen bases seems like an arbitrary pairing

is there a sabrmetric deep dive that explains the significance?
