Xps one has to consider the aesthetics of watching a 5'8" man hit dongs vs. A 6'7" man. The former is more beautiful to me, but I can respect a taste for the maximalist

(I'm just happy it's a close case because I really do love Mookie's game so much. To even stay within range of Judge's bat is enough to keep me in awe of his game)

Mlb.com rounds up to 5'9" but I'm not going to let that ruin my point

Hit his 41st in the first inning today, then the Jays IBB'd him in the second with two outs and the bases empty (Yankees leading 4-1).

The last intentional walk with the bases empty and two outs in the first two innings of a game was of Glenn Borgmann of the Twins on Aug. 10, 1972 vs. the Angels.

Seems like a rather silly move, especially for a team going nowhere, but they did get out of the inning without a run.

Glenn Borgmann?

I’m skeptical of all distance tracking but I’m very skeptical that Judge’s longest ball since his rookie season was yesterday’s (477 feet). It doesn’t make any sense. Especially when you look at the distance by season for Stanton, Acuña Jr., etc.

(xpost) Judge or Glenn Borgmann?

I just don't have any recollection of him...Butch Wynegar is the first Twins catcher I remember without checking. (And now that I have, George Mitterwald is the first.)

Xp distance tracking. Co-sign me on statcast under-reporting distance conspiracy theory. Ohtani hit a bomb that literally went over the seats into the bathroom at Minute Maid Park. 440ft? No way.

I like this:

After obliterating his 41st dinger of the season in the first inning, Judge came to the dish again in the second with two out and no one one. Toronto intentionally walked him. If you want to impress your friends with your command of obscure trivia, the last time someone was intentionally walked that early in the game with none on and two out was Glenn Borgmann of the Twins in August of 1972.

He's sort of within triple crown range...18 points behind Witt; if you actually did the math, likely a real longshot (especially considering you can't keep this up forever).

Was just about to post the same link. Luis Gonzalez and Matt Olson are/were good players, but they kind of stick out on the 50/125/125 list.

I mentioned Judge and the Triple Crown. Didn't realize that Shohei and Ozuna are much closer right now.

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2024 01:38 (one year ago)

From Posnanski today, a vivid demonstration of why it's harder for Judge and everybody else to do what they do than hitters of the past.

I randomly picked out a few great hitting years and wanted to see how that hitter did against pitchers the fourth time through. I’m sure if I searched, I could find exceptions. But here’s what I found:

Hitter vs. Batter, facing a starter for the 4th time (or more):

Babe Ruth, 1927: 119 PAs, .394/.492/.894 with 12 home runs
Ted Williams, 1941: 85 PAs, .446/.577/.877 with 7 home runs
Mickey Mantle, 1956: 80 PAs, .386/.463/.871 with 11 home runs.
Frank Robinson, 1966: 63 PAs, .333/.460/.706 with 6 home runs.
Joe Morgan, 1976: 54 PAs, .439/.556/.902 with 10 extra bases hits.
Mike Schmidt, 1980: 48 PAs, .361/.479/.667 with 3 home runs and 10 walks.
Cal Ripken, 1991: 45 PAs, .463/.511/.756 with 3 home runs.
Barry Bonds, 2001: 21 PAs, .438/.571/.1.188 with 4 home runs
Miguel Cabrera, 2010: 14 PAs, .400/.500/.700 with 1 home run
Aaron Judge, 2024: 0 PAs

I'll trust that it was indeed a random sample and he didn't discard examples that didn't fit.
