Team is cursed.

NEW YORK -- David Wright has left the New York Mets game against San Francisco after being hit squarely in the helmet by a 94 mph fastball from Giants starter Matt Cain.

Cain's 0-2 pitch with none out in the fourth inning of a scoreless game Saturday hit Wright just above the brim of the helmet, sending it flying as Wright fell to the ground in the right-handed batter's box.

Wright lay motionless on his stomach for over a minute before trainers helped turn him over onto his back. One trainer leaned in close as Wright was on his stomach, talking to the third baseman. After Wright was turned over, he sat up and a trainer shone a light in his eyes.

Wright was helped to his feet and walked off the field with limited help. Fans gave him a loud ovation.

Cain, who had thrown just seven balls in the first three innings, walked halfway in toward the plate and sat in a crouch as trainers attended to Wright. Bochy visited the mound at the end of the 3-minute delay.

Fernando Tatis ran for the All-Star starter and stayed in the game at third.

Fifth-place San Diego can't afford to have Cabrera end up like Jose Reyes (with fewer hits, better plate discipline).

Are they familiar with how the Rule 5 draft works?

ha i was going to post RIP David Wright two hours ago but held back
realizing with their bad luck this year i might jinx it into becoming true

sanskrit, Saturday, 15 August 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

good that O. Perez is showing some signs of life though

sanskrit, Saturday, 15 August 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

When asked if Wright could miss the rest of the season, New York manager Jerry Manuel said it's "a possibility" depending on how further tests come out. The club had not decided whether to put him on the disabled list before Sunday's game against the Giants.

"For all their problems, the Mets entered tonight with the NL's best average with RISP..."

Yes, Gary, that's why THAT STAT HAS NO INTRINSIC MEANING.

(I realize Cohen is way easier to listen to than most play-by-play guys, but his smarts are a little overestimated.)

Time for fun w/ Sheffield

Andy K, Thursday, 20 August 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

Gary Sheffield has asked the Mets for a contract extension, and the club was unwilling to meet the request.

In other news, outfielder Gary Sheffield was listed on the lineup posted about four hours before the first pitch Thursday night. His name was replaced by youngster Cory Sullivan about 30 minutes later.

"He asked for a day off to kind of clear some thoughts and things," Manuel said. "I think it would do him good both physically and mentally to get a day."

"Just for the best today," Sheffield said when asked why he wasn't starting. "It's just the best thing to allow somebody else to play. I'm 100 percent healthy."

Upon returning to the clubhouse after batting practice, Sheffield joked, "I'm still here."

Billy Wagner back with a perfect eighth. Who will buy?

As for Sheffield, why the FUCK did they pull him back from waivers? GET GONE.

Hugh Manatee (WmC), Friday, 21 August 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

Keith and Gary wound up discussing Larry Storch voicing Mr. Whoopee on Tennessee Tuxedo, and Keith pretty much recited the credits of Vincente Minnelli's Gigi.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

mayor jingleberries, Friday, 21 August 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

for those keeping score, Livan was released.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

Not that it matters much in this filthy ambulance of a season, but Hamels has been the Mets' little bitch this season. Very tasty.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 22 August 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

geez, the '69 Mets got old, including Nolan Ryan

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 22 August 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

Ryan threw a pitch to Yogi Berra and didn't kill him!

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 22 August 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

i'm going to make a post so it doesn't look like you're talking to yourself.

sanskrit, Sunday, 23 August 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)

That's mighty white o' you.

Castillo is 9th in the league with a .406 OBP. His only season over .400 was 2000.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 23 August 2009 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

morbs you went today right? at least you got to see something in person most never will.

sanskrit, Sunday, 23 August 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

Unbelievable...only this team

Alex in '83 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 23 August 2009 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

yes, I was there. The Mets are not allowed to engage in heart-stomping, gizzard-shredding, Oedipal-gouging sadism unless Dr. M is in the house.

There was a guy asking for ppl's tickets outside one of the Citi Field exits, some savvy eBay dealer?

Bruntlett's fielding pct for the ninth inning should've been .600, cuz that "infield hit" by Murphy was bullshit, clearly a second E4.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Monday, 24 August 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

sailor goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I love you too, schmuck.

re eBay, saw a guy outside Citi right after the game asking for tickets. (they're not stubs, they don't tear em)

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 13:23 (sixteen years ago)

Castillo and Murphy are the only players on the opening day lineup to not hit the DL this year.

the moreno you knowshon (omar little), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

injuryexpert Putz done for season after reinjuring elbow. May need TJ if it doesn't heal up with rest.

Andy K, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

OK -- it's been at least two weeks since Nieve tore his quad, right? Let's have him do a few windsprints and three sets of leg extensions at, ohhhh, 140 pounds -- see how he's feeling then.

Andy K, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

good news at last: Ollie Perez done for the year w/ patellar tendinitis

ahaaha ...Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla tagged everyone in the Mets dugout before heading into the clubhouse and tagging both equipment manager Charlie Samuels and physical therapist John Zajac.
