I am once again reminded that I don’t like Zac Gallen purely because he complained about not getting Cy Young votes last year and to keeping track of the names of writers who didn’t vote for him. Not quite in my top ten pitchers I like to see lit up but definitely top 30.

Because I have now read the science of hitting, the Ted Williams rant about how you don’t swing at the first pitch permeates my thoughts every time I see a terrible 1 pitch out

There is much more to that first time up than just taking a pitch, there is the continuing matter of proper thinking, and I want to elaborate on it here where it is so important. Nobody has ever said this around me, or, as far as I know, even thought it—but the first time at bat has to be a key to effective hitting, a key to the day you are going to have and therefore a key to your baseball life because the days pile one on another to make a career. You must learn to make that first time up a key time by striving to find out as much about a pitcher as possible, and you do that by making him pitch.

Unlike hitters, the expanded playoffs--unless you're Bumgarner or Schilling or Smoltz--tends to hurt pitchers on all-time playoff leaderboards. Cf. Kershaw/Scherzer/Verlander. They said Wheeler's got the lowest post-season WHIP ever now. Still only 55 innings, but building a resume there.
