Scooped up from bellow of the zone. Love watching dingers of balls, especially when they are walk-offs and especially especially against the Yanks

guys -- don't pitch to judge

mookieproof, Sunday, 30 July 2023 02:16 (ten months ago) link

We can send over Matt Chapman to chew out the Orioles' manager.

clemenza, Sunday, 30 July 2023 04:01 (ten months ago) link

Mountcastle always goes on these tears and makes you think he's finally turning it around before crashing back to earth for 3 months, I'm ready to get off the ride

, Sunday, 30 July 2023 19:03 (ten months ago) link

Sad the O’s don’t seem to be making any moves this deadline, if ever there was a season to go for it :\

hrep (H.P), Sunday, 30 July 2023 23:14 (ten months ago) link

Wouldn’t mind if this team didn’t kill Bautista before September:/

JoeStork, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 02:21 (ten months ago) link

Do we think Verlander nixed a trade to Baltimore? Very hard to imagine we couldn't have offered the Mets a more appealing package than what they got from Houston.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:15 (ten months ago) link

Anyway, on "awe and mystique" grounds I'm a bit sad about Verlander and about potentially having to face him in a playoff series. But setting that aside, I think getting Jack Flaherty for not very much is.. OK? It doesn't really upgrade the rotation but it does provide flexibility and hedge against late-season injuries. If this was the KIND of move we were going to make I'd have rather had Jordan Montgomery I think.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 18:17 (ten months ago) link

getting picked off to end the game cannot be a good feeling

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 August 2023 01:50 (ten months ago) link

Didn’t this happen to another team yesterday too? Wonder the last time there were back to back days of a team losing from a pick off at first base.

Also, this was not a fun game to watch. Two hbp in a row to walk in a run was an ugly way to lose the lead

hrep (H.P), Thursday, 3 August 2023 02:34 (ten months ago) link

Jack Flaherty era starts tonight!

Guys, I have a nervous feeling. I don't know whether there was more Elias could have done at the deadline. But more and more I feel like, despite the young talent under control and the young talent still to come, 2023 is the best chance we have.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 3 August 2023 18:51 (ten months ago) link

Starts in about 15 minutes--afternoon game.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 August 2023 18:52 (ten months ago) link

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 3 August 2023 18:56 (ten months ago) link

Mountcastle 11 for 13 this series

JoeStork, Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:05 (ten months ago) link

I was going to post about him--I've don't think I've seen anything like it in all my years of watching the Jays. Brett used to kill us, Judge kills us, but Mountcastle has maybe eclipsed even those two. Career going into today (4-4 + SF): ~200 PA, .330/.394/.643, 15 HR.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:10 (ten months ago) link

Comparison:

Brett (725 PA): .321/.401/.551, 22 HR
Judge (433 PA): .290/.394/.589, 32 HR

He hits HR at Judge's rate, gets on base at Brett's rate, and overall is better than both.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:23 (ten months ago) link

only took two days to fix jack flaherty

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:29 (ten months ago) link

And yet the orioles fly another win.

If it hasn’t been noted yet: the orioles have the longest streak of not being swept in mlb atm, going back to may 2022

hrep (H.P), Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:29 (ten months ago) link

Even though we live in Atlanta, my 12 year old son is a big Orioles fan. (Not a bandwagoner, he latched onto them before they got good. Although I'd like to think he has a good eye for young teams on the rise--he also spotted the Jacksonville Jaguars before they started winning games--I suspect the logo has at least as much to do with it.) Anyways, he's about to turn 13 next week, and so for his birthday I'm taking him up to see them play Houston on the 10th. I can't think of a better time to catch this team, and it'll definitely be a birthday to remember.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 3 August 2023 22:31 (ten months ago) link

Not really being talked about but Ryan Mountcastle is back from a lengthy IL stay from some odd vertigo condition and could provide a huge boost in the cleanup spot. Preseason predictions forecasted him between 2.2-3.0 WAR for 2023.

I know: headlines are headlines, and mlb.com is mlb.com, and how can I even give a second thought to something so trivial? But today's game got this headline on mlb.com:

Flaherty's historic O's debut secures series win over Blue Jays

Why historic?

Flaherty became the first pitcher to go six or more innings with one earned run or fewer allowed in his Orioles debut since Jeremy Hellickson (seven scoreless vs. Royals on Aug. 2, 2017). Flaherty’s eight strikeouts were tied for the fourth most in a Baltimore debut (since 1954) and the most since Bud Norris fanned eight on Aug. 1, 2013, vs. the Astros.

That's a lot of history right there.

clemenza, Friday, 4 August 2023 02:13 (ten months ago) link

If Fujinami can pitch like that consistently.... wow.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 6 August 2023 20:29 (ten months ago) link

smh

Kevin Brown is one of the most talented, thoughtful, curious, positive people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, working with and calling a friend.

He’s truly one of the best play-by-play announcers in the country.

If the Orioles don’t want him, another team’ll be elated. https://t.co/tIUcrIGjBm

Ah didn’t see this before I posted in the general thread. What a wet towel on the previously immaculate orioles vibes. Just a baffling decision

hrep (H.P), Monday, 7 August 2023 22:33 (ten months ago) link

Boy, there's no way to make this look OK, is there? And as people are pointing out on Twitter it's kind of the same thing that happened all those years ago with GOAT radio announcer Jon Miller.

Good win against the Astros yesterday. It was a thrill to be there. I was afraid we would get rained out, but the rain mostly stopped before the game started. We were sweating the 9th inning. Bautista was probably fortunate that the last batter he faced was the team's worst hitter.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:53 (ten months ago) link

I guess I shouldn't worry when the team has to go ten innings against the A's. It's been a long road trip.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Sunday, 20 August 2023 18:30 (nine months ago) link

My god, I feel sorry for the A's.

NY Times interview w/ John Angelos:

Because economics, Angelos “conceded that it might not be feasible for his popular young core to be career Orioles like Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer and Cal Ripken Jr.”

Hope the O’s figure out a way to pay Adley, Gunnar and Grayson #Birdland pic.twitter.com/rBvCkc0QdK

hrep (H.P), Monday, 21 August 2023 21:24 (nine months ago) link

Tells me they're really good: after the Jays surprisingly took the first game of this series, they came out last night and shut that down pronto, even (or especially) with Gausman on the mound.

clemenza, Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:17 (nine months ago) link

The Angelos thing is interesting. I wrote about this a little while ago, one of James's theories: that if the team is collectively angry at the owner and saying "We'll show him," that's a good jolt of motivational energy, but not if they're mad at the manager. But I might have that backwards.

clemenza, Thursday, 24 August 2023 19:20 (nine months ago) link

Not a good week for UCLs. Bautista was one of the best pitchers in MLB this year and for the O's to lose such a critical piece of their success on their stretch run must be extra painful. RIP sweet prince, see you in 2025.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 27 August 2023 02:07 (nine months ago) link

He's currently on the 15 day DL, let's see how it develops.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Sunday, 27 August 2023 02:09 (nine months ago) link

Gotta like the way the rest of the team stepped up tonight, with Cano saying his goal in the ninth was to do his best Bautista imitation.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 27 August 2023 02:47 (nine months ago) link

something kind of bradish

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 August 2023 03:07 (nine months ago) link

Félix Bautista is on the field at Fenway Park. He had a glove in hand as he walked with head athletic trainer Brian Ebel and is now doing some running, seemingly having just completed a throwing session.

Isn’t Monday the first day they can activate him

ydkb (gyac), Friday, 8 September 2023 22:17 (nine months ago) link

Means pitching next week apparently! Funny how important I thought "when will John Means be ready" would be for the success of the 2023 team

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 9 September 2023 15:35 (nine months ago) link

I think they had some good luck last year to finish with the record they did, and I don't think they got that much better -- Grayson and Means will pitch and Gunnar and Adley will play full seasons instead of 1/3 and 2/3 respectively, but -- it won't be THAT different of a team. If it happens to be the case that the group of starters they have right now contains 5 people who can be average to above-average through 2023, they'll be pretty good. And that's not impossible. But I can't honestly say it's likely.

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, February 20, 2023 4:22 PM (six months ago) bookmarkflaglink

I mean this was me in February. I do think that we HAVE ended up having 5 legitimate starters in the rotation throughout the year and I don't think I was wrong to think of that as less than plausible in advance. I think the big thing I missed is that I was thinking "who has the potential to really shine?" and I wasn't thinking about the possibility (which I also think wasn't predictable in advance!) of how we would just not be giving at bats to people who were bad at hitting! Our 8 and 9 guys in the lineups are OK hitters just about every night! And that has a lot to do with Frazier and O'Hearn and Hicks all being OK to legitimately good, which I think it was fair not to see coming.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 9 September 2023 15:40 (nine months ago) link

I love Gunnar Henderson

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 10 September 2023 00:14 (nine months ago) link

I follow the dodgers, who have been famously "good" at hitting the past decade or so through the order, and watching the 6-9 hitters of Dodgers vs. Orioles is night and day this year. I keep getting surprised when the 6-9 hitters in the Orioles do something because of what I am used to even though my brain knows that the Orioles can still mash in those spots. Frazier/O'Hearn/Hicks; all studs in my book

H.P, Sunday, 10 September 2023 02:15 (nine months ago) link

I also, would like to put on the record my love for Gunnar Henderson (what a name), Tony Taters, and the young, hot, star, Rustchdaddy

H.P, Sunday, 10 September 2023 02:17 (nine months ago) link

Hard to believe--because of their turnaround, not that they're not legitimate--but they're going to win 100 games, maybe as many as 105.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 September 2023 14:25 (nine months ago) link
